 Food Gatherers, Washtenaw County's food bank and food rescue organization, is accepting Rhode Island philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein's annual challenge to bolster local efforts for hunger relief.
Now through April 30, money raised by Food Gatherers will be matched by Feinstein's Challenge to Help Fight Hunger. Food Gatherers' trucks distribute about four tons of food six days a week. Feinstein has donated $1 million to hunger relief for the past 10 years.

The city of Ann Arbor recently created a non-motorized transportation plan  (pdf download 12.9 mb) to encourage non-motorized modes of transportation, such as pedestrians and bicyclists, in the Ann Arbor area.The plan replaces the city's bicycle master plan, will be incorporated into the city's master plan, and calls for implementing corridor-specific infrastructure improvements, such as new bicycle lanes, shared use paths, sidewalks and refuge islands. These policies and guidelines hope to establish a safe and comprehensive non-motorized transportation system.Work began on developing the plan in early 2004, which included public workshops and professional city planning input. Early next year, Ann Arbor homeowners within certain income guidelines will be able to take advantage of financial assistance to lower their utility bills.
The city has started a program to assist lower-income homeowners with making their houses more energy-efficient, as a way to stabilize what's turning into a big expense for many homeowners.
The money can be used for energy-efficient appliances, lighting, windows, doors, heating and cooling systems; and for air-sealing, insulation and water-saving devices.

Coming soon - a house will be moved from Downtown Ann Arbor to a vacant lot on Pontiac Trail.  This vacant lot on Pontiac Trail, in the historic Northside area, recently was purchased to make room for a home in Downtown Ann Arbor that is being relocated to make room for a mid rise condo building-  Now that is progress!

Here in Ann Arbor, there are relatively few neighborhood markets like the Jefferson Market - unlike many other cities like Boston, New York etc. where there are markets on many neighborhood street corners. 
 The Jefferson Market is a place where you can get some good food, household supplies, candy and ice cream and a great cup of coffee.  Sit inside or out front - right across the street from Bach Elementary School. 
 Here are my kids, one week before Halloween enjoying a little treat after their piano lessons.
