Things to Know When Moving to Portland Oregon

As a REALTOR® working throughout the Portland Metro area, I get lots of inquiries from people moving here from other states. Whatever state you come from, here are are some of the common questions I get:
1. Does it rain all the time? No, it actually doesn't rain all the time....especially in the summer months where we typically have very little rain. Ok..so we do get most of our rain in the winter months but I bet you didn't know that we actually get LESS rain on average per year than … (27 comments)

portland oregon: PATCH ONLINE NEWSPAPER OPPORTUNITY and THE SILVER LINING CHRONICLES - 02/16/12 01:43 PM
I just had to re-blog Jill Sackler's post about a wonderful opportunity to blog for a local newspaper.
Since Jill brought to my attention how Portland Oregon is one of the top destinations for retirees, "The Silver Lining Chronicles" are worth reading. We all know that us  boomers (yeah, I'm at the tail end) are now and going to be a HUGE part of a home buying or selling segment of our business. Jill writes "The Silver Lining Chronicles" with great insight and knowledge about working with those that are aging and need to move for one reason or another.

portland oregon: What Do Portlanders Do in the Rain? - 01/29/12 11:02 PM

What Do Portlanders Do in the Rain?
You might have heard that we get some rain here in Portland, and this last few weeks we've gotten more than in the entire month of December.
Having lived on Long Island, NY for my first 32 years, I can say that even though we do get rain, and our weather can get down into the freezing level, on average, our winters are fairly mild. Nope..no running out to my car to crank up the heat and defrosters while I ran back inside to finish getting ready. Wet...but mild. Hey, could be worse, … (17 comments)

portland oregon: What is a Flag Lot and are there any Pros and Cons to buying or selling a home on one? - 06/08/11 02:11 PM
What is a Flag Lot and are there any Pros and Cons to buying or selling a home on one?
One of the common questions I get is what is a flag lot? Here in the Portland Metro and surrounding suburbs, we have what is called the Urban Growth Boundary.  Builders are limited to build neighborhoods and homes within this boundary to prevent urban sprawl, so they built homes in every nook and cranny that they could to get as many homes in the allowable space. Many of these "infill" homes are on flag lots that are tucked away off the main street.

portland oregon: Oregon Zoo Summer Concerts 2011 - 06/03/11 10:59 PM
Oregon Zoo Summer Concerts 2011
There are lots of great artists on the slate for this seasons summer concerts at the Oregon Zoo. Typically our summers are pretty nice with very few days of rainfall. Sorta makes up for that rainy winter. A couple that I would enjoy seeing are The Indigo Girls, Los Lobos with the Los Lonely boys, and Chris Isaak..but lots of others like Peter Frampton that would just bring me right back to my high school days. Make a day of it and visit the animals then enjoy a nice concert! Life is good in Portland Oregon!

portland oregon: What is a sewer scope inspection and why it's important for you to have one when buying a home in Portland - 05/15/11 03:19 PM
What is a sewer scope inspection and why it's important for you to have one when buying a home in Portland.
Why should you have a sewer scope inspection you might ask? This inspection is usually done on a home that is older than 20 years. With any home that is in an older neighborhood, sometimes there have been cracks, corrosion and holes in the sewer line that can happen from soil moving, tree roots, etc.
Having been at one recently with my client, It was recommended for this home as although the home was built in 1996, the neighborhood … (13 comments)

portland oregon: What is the biggest bang for your buck in home remodeling in Portland Oregon? - 05/07/11 09:38 PM

What is the biggest bang for your buck in home remodeling in Portland Oregon?
As a REALTOR® I often get asked this question when someone is thinking about selling their home. When you're listing a home that has had updates and some remodeling, it's important to know the costs that you'll be able to recoup in the best of cases.
Of course there are many variables on this. One being how long you've been in the home since these have been added as well as if you have many updates that price you out of a neighborhood. Others … (12 comments)

portland oregon: The Portland Saturday Market - 05/03/11 11:42 PM

The Portland Saturday Market
When we have out of towners coming in to visit, they usually want to take advantage of our no sales tax and want to go shopping. A good place to take people for some fun shopping is the Portland Saturday Market. Although the name has Saturday in it...it is also open on Sundays.
Located downtown at at Waterfront park and Ankeny Plaza, the Portland Saturday Market you'll find just a bit of everything like creative items made out of silverware, hand dyed silk scarves ( I bought two), jewelry, and the famous duct tape wallets. … (16 comments)

portland oregon: The Island Cafe opens for the season on Hayden Island Oregon! - 04/10/11 11:35 PM
The Island Cafe opens for the season on Hayden Island!
Yesterday I attended the first Phlocking of the year at the seasons opening of the Island Cafe. What's a phlocking you may ask? Well..as a member of the Key Northwest Parrot heads in Portland Oregon, we went enmasse (well, hooked up at our own pace...island time and all) at the Island Cafe that is right on the Columbia river.
When you pull off the Jantzen Beach exit, and head down Tomahawk Island Dr. you feel like you're in some other place other than Portland..a nice summer community made up … (14 comments)

A Mom can brag on her son right? Check out his Blog about Fishing in Portland
When I was a young girl, my father would take my sisters and I out on his boat on the Great South Bay, on Long Island. He taught me a love for fishing.
At the time the Bay was full of blowfish and flounder and catching the occasional eel was really excitiing watching that rod bend completely to the water.
Going to summer camps, I would head down to any pier, slide that worm over my hook and wait for those sunfish or catfish to … (14 comments)

Get your cameras ready...the super moon expected Saturday March 19th 2011
For all those photographers out there..or just those that love to look at the moon, tomorrow night we are in for a treat and are expected to witness a fantastic sight dubbed the "Super Moon". Apparently this is something only seen every 18 years. This is described as the moon being at its closest point to the Earth as well as being at its fullest making for what will appear to be a much larger full moon..about 14% larger at it's closest point. Sounds like a great photo opportunity to me..so I'm hoping it's … (17 comments)

portland oregon: Morning Snow in West Linn, Oregon..view from my back deck - 02/24/11 02:43 PM
Ok, so maybe it's because I grew up on the east coast where I learned to drive in the snow by going into an empty parking lot and practicing 360's and how to turn the wheel to counter slides.. or maybe it's because this "HUGE" snow storm is so mild compared to what the rest of the country has been seeing on a consistant basis, that I have to smile when all the schools are cancelled, the news cuts into The today show to go on an on about the "Winter storm". Granted, there are some areas in Portland that do get slick … (2 comments)

portland oregon: I got the Valentine's Day cold blues - 02/14/11 03:32 PM

So much for well laid plans. My hubby and I were all scheduled to celebrate Valentine's Day at the Portland City Grill, Aaron Meyers & Tim Ellis team up for a Valentines in the Sky event.
Instead, I'm lounging on the couch, my head feels like it looks like the Jack in the Box guys head, and just altogether feeling crappy with this cold. I do blame this on my personal trainer Angie because she was just saying last week how we've been lucky not to have gotten sick...damn her. (ok, not really her fault)
My hubby just e-mailed … (10 comments)
