regina: A Day of Education and Sheer Inspiration - Column by Bob Hughes - 12/16/11 09:39 AM

It was a highly charged gathering of an eclectic group of people, each diverse in careers and personalities, that gathered at the Wascana Golf and Country Club in Regina just 10 days removed from Christmas. Arriving in the dark before the sun had risen, they were greeted by a glittering array of Christmas lights and decorations out in front of the clubhouse. And, as the sun rose, they were presented with an arresting view of the prairies background by the vista that is Regina’s expanding skyline off in the distant.
They had come as guests of EXIT Realty Fusion to … (1 comments)

regina: It's Starting to Look a lot Like Christmas! Column by Bob Hughes - 12/09/11 11:26 PM

The signs are everywhere. The lights have been turned on at City Hall and the legislative building. The front windows of homes throughout the city are filled with the festive mood that decorated Christmas trees lend to the season. Carlyle has held its acclaimed Christmas festival. The Rotary Christmas Carol Festival filled Knox-Met Church in Regina with the sounds of Christmas.
Christmas is a time to make memories and a time to bring back memories. The first Christmas with children, a special gift, a turkey dinner with family and friends. Our tree, for instance, carries with it ornaments gathered from … (1 comments)

regina: Could It Be Miller Whine Time? Column by Bob Hughes - 10/17/11 08:34 PM
So, the kindly old coach sat there, in front of the baying dawgs of the media, and the creases in his grandfatherly face seemed squeezing tighter as each word slid off the big mouths of the media wretches, who now could smell blood. And, he was in an ugly mood. And, he was not at all happy having to be there, answering to all these no nuthin’s, whose role in life is something he has always known: To build somebody up and then tear them down. At his feet, lay the carnage of one of the worst seasons in Saskatchewan Roughrider … (1 comments)

regina: The Nightmare on 10th Avenue! Column by Bob Hughes - 10/03/11 10:17 PM
Why is it that people in Regina stop at intersections which have no Stop signs, and don’t stop where there is a Stop sign? Because they do. And, why is it that the Saskatchewan Roughriders can’t figure out just what is wrong with a team that was in the last two Grey Cup games and now seems destined for a last place finish? Because they can’t. In the sober, somber aftermath of the Massacre in McMahon, which preceded the Torture in Taylor Field, vice-president of football operations and head coach Ken Miller mentioned he was going to sit down with some … (0 comments)

regina: Turn Out the Lights; The Party is Over... Column by Bob Hughes - 09/26/11 10:53 PM
Saturday, it was an unusual day. Saskatchewan’s late summer spawned 30 degree plus temperatures with only a whisper of a breeze. The sky was a sheet of bright blue, and there was more of the same on the way. Ah, yes, more of the same.
In a baking hot Taylor Field on that day in September, it took the stinging words of a B.C. Lions player named Aaron Hunt to bring it all home, to wipe away the makeup and the costume and the makeover. Said the large Lions’ tackle, in words that hurt, perhaps because they seemed so true: “They … (1 comments)

regina: Back from the Dead - and with a Big Bang! Column by Bob Hughes - 09/20/11 10:37 AM
Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have jerked themselves from the land of the living dead in one of the most arresting stories so far this season in the Canadian Football League. Seemingly ready for the embalmer after falling to 1-7 in a pathetic first-half of the season, the Roughriders resembled anything like a Grey Cup bound team, unless they were willing to buy tickets to the big game in Vancouver. And, then, somebody blinked, and it all turned around. Just like that, actually. From the very beginning of the season, there were three impediments standing in … (0 comments)

regina: Wasted Days and Wasted Nights - Column by Bob Hughes - 08/15/11 10:54 AM

Well past the sunrise portion of a season that glowed with such hope that was wrapped in the normal plethora of promises, the Saskatchewan Roughriders are taking on water as swiftly as the Titanic. And, some of the relentlessly riveted Rider Nation have it figured that like the captain of the Titanic that fateful night, the Riders’ brass have chosen to believe that no iceberg can sink something this unsinkable.
The Good Ship Rider is taking on water fast, and week by week hope dwindles steadily that anybody on board can figure out what’s wrong, how to right the ship. … (0 comments)

regina: Finding Time to Help Others - Column by Bob Hughes - 07/14/11 09:38 AM
The other day on his sports radio show on CKRM that is steadily building a growing audience, Rod Pedersen made the observation that if you want to be in a city in Saskatchewan where you can run into some of sports’ greatest stars, then Regina is the place.    He listed off a litany of names that represented a who’s who of sports in not only this province but also from throughout North America who can be spotted in Regina at any time in any place. “You can be walking down the street, and there is George Reed,” somebody who was on … (0 comments)

regina: A Special Event - For Special People; Column by Bob Hughes - 06/08/11 07:32 PM
In the long, long ago, it took a special family meeting to start a movement that turned into a runaway snowball that created an avalanche of wonder throughout the world. And in the process, removed for once and forever, a stigma that showed man’s inhumanity towards man. It was the late 1960s when a member of one of the United States’ powerful families gathered her brothers and sisters and parents together in their Hyannis Port estate. Her name was Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Her brother, John, was the president of the United States. She had a sister who, in the words of … (0 comments)

regina: EXIT Cares - Funds Raised for Neo-Natal Unit - Column by Bob Hughes - 03/23/11 06:30 PM
Regina radio station Z99 held its 24th annual Radiothon for the Regina General Hospital’s neo-natal centre, and went over the top in fund-raising. The two-day marathon saw Z99 personalities CC, Buzz and Lori stay on the air for 36 non-stop hours, talking up the fund-raising effort, interviewing people, and generally building momentum. In the end, the Z99 Radiothon raised over $380,000, which will be used to purchase new equipment that will be used to help babies, who need medical care at birth, survive and go on to live healthy, happy lives. EXIT Realty Fusion, already well known in Regina for its … (1 comments)

regina: EXIT Realty Fusion Hits Moose Jaw - Column by Bob Hughes - 03/11/11 03:01 PM
There’s little doubt that EXIT Realty Fusion has changed the face of how real estate companies hold open house days. EXIT’s ever-growing lineup of agents have caught the attention of buyers and sellers, and the general public, by turning their city-wide open house days into fund-raising events for a long list of charities in Regina. This weekend, EXIT Realty Fusion will be going the extra mile. Actually, make that an extra 40 miles. The company that in 2010 was named the winner of the ABEX award as the best new venture in the whole province of Saskatchewan; is spreading its wings … (0 comments)

regina: Oak Park Wins Big! - 02/03/11 10:27 PM
Oak Park Developments of Calgary was a big winner at the recent Regina and Region Home Builders’ Association 19th annual Master Awards Dinner at the Delta Hotel in Regina. Oak Park was named the winner of the Master Award for Best Condominium Project with its development of Sage at Harbour Landing project. Now, the Sales Force for the Sage project and Skyy in Lakeridge – EXIT Realty Fusion of Regina - knows why sales have been so strong for both projects. They’re considered the best in Regina, that’s all, and at very reasonable prices. The award is given for planning and … (1 comments)

regina: Switching to Slow Motion - Column by Bob Hughes - 01/12/11 06:30 PM
Somewhere on the shores of the mighty Wascana, the drums are beating. It is the annual gathering of the Loyal Disorder of Rider Priders, those long enough in the teeth that they remember the enduring horror of the Reign of Error. Across the frozen lake of thin ice are the lights of the city, beaming into the black prairie sky under minus-20 temperatures.
This will not keep the Loyal Disorder from spending the nights in their tee-pees sheltered by the great tall trees that each were hand-planted by the forefathers. When there is a wind, the tents flap hard against the … (1 comments)

regina: Willy Winds it Up - Say it Ain't So! Column by Bob Hughes - 12/29/10 10:08 PM
Mornings are never going to be the same. Who is going to talk me to out of my sleepy state? Who will cavort on the air with the glib guy from the big auto dealership at the north tip of the city, even though he calls its location “In beautiful downtown Regina.”? Who will do those weekend remotes like nobody else has, or can? When I got word through a top-secret email that Willy Cole was retiring as Regina’s longest running morning radio host, I blinked more than once. Willy Cole is not supposed to retire. Never. He’s more than a … (0 comments)

regina: Hot Chili on a Cold Day - And All for Charity! Column by Bob Hughes - 12/12/10 11:07 PM
With a Saskatchewan wind blowing, the snow falling, the temperature dropping, a countless number of Reginans gave up part of their Saturday afternoon to head out to the state-of-the-art EXIT Realty Fusion office in Regina. They filled their bellies, and warmed their hearts by participating in one of the most innovative fundraisers any real estate company in Canada has ever held. It was called EXIT Realty Fusion’s Chili Cook Off. This is how it went. EXIT Realty Fusion agents went into their own kitchens to come up with 10 different Chili dishes. They brought them into EXIT Realty Fusion on Saturday … (2 comments)

regina: Thank Goodness for the Riders - Column by Bob Hughes - 12/09/10 01:38 PM
The best thing the Regina Pats have going for them right now is the Saskatchewan Roughriders. As the Pats, once a glory team in junior hockey, flounder through another abysmal season, headed for yet another year out of the playoffs, nobody is talking about them. Perhaps, the shock of missing the playoffs a year ago when they had, among others, a star named Jordan Eberle in the lineup, is still rolling through the city, and, thus, their pratfall this season is nothing more than the norm for what was once the cornerstone franchise of the junior hockey in Canada. Thus, they … (1 comments)

regina: And Just What is the Culture? Column by Bob Hughes - 12/05/10 11:15 PM
So, as the stomach continues to churn in Riderville, one question keeps persisting in seeking a definitive answer. That would be, who will be the next head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders now that Ken Miller, at 69 years of age, has ridden off into the coaching sunset, earning a well-deserved nap in his final football role as vice-president of football operations, whatever that means? Throughout the albeit brief time the Rider Nation has had to digest, spit out, and digest again what the criteria should be for finding a successor to Miller as head coach, there has been a lot … (0 comments)
