the maverick builder: Lessons from Your Insurance Agent by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 03/07/10 07:56 PM
Selling insurance is not easy. It's a highly competitive business filled with a confusing array of products. Consumers don't like to think about insurance, and they usually believe the price is too high. Many people believe that they don't need it, or they're simply willing to put off purchasing a policy until they have more time and/or money. Additionally, buying a policy can be confusing for the uninitiated consumer.

You've rustled up five leads from a topnotch online service. Ready to sell each and every one of them. At least, you think you're ready. Here are some tips to help you … (2 comments)

the maverick builder: Smith Barney Selling by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 03/07/10 07:13 PM
How often do people try to sell us something before we have expressed an interest, have a desire, or are in the market for what they have? It seems the standard for many salespeople is to try to sell to anyone and everyone regardless of the interest level.
When someone attempts to sell us something before we have expressed an interest, the initial thought may be, "Why would I buy from you? You haven't earned the right to sell to me!"
The fact of the matter is that selling, both online and off, is about determining if there is a need … (0 comments)

the maverick builder: "Swipe" My Dirty Little Secrets by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 03/06/10 05:08 PM
"When people hire me to write marketing copy, they always ask, "Where do you come up with all those ideas?"  I just smile and say thank you.  Leaving them wanting more.
But, there is no "more". (That is TOP SECRET)
I write from my unconscious.  This may startle you, but I do not plan out or think through what I write.  Instead I write through dictation.  Yes dictation to myself.  I just listen to something within and just write.
I know the subject I am writing about, but I do not have an outline or sketch!  I have an intention, but not … (1 comments)

the maverick builder: Business Conflicted - Very Nice by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 03/06/10 03:02 PM

I had a fight this morning with the newspaper guy!

We don't fight often, but sometimes it happens
What can I say?  "Was I the only one who noticed
it was raining outside?"

We're human.  And fights just happen.
"Just bag it next time will ya?"

And that's good news.  "No Christmas extra jingle
in your pocket, buddy!"

It's good news because it's the number one thing people love to read or hear about. It's just that simple.  Conflict and stories go hand in hand.  Just give me a conflict and I give you a … (0 comments)

the maverick builder: My Case Against Perfection by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 03/06/10 02:45 PM
In OZ, after Dorothy's house is relocated to unsuitable soil, she was asked by the Lady in the Bubble, "Are you a good witch or a bad witch?"  The same question goes for mother-in-laws and the answer is not a coin toss!

Maverick:      "Yes your honor, I represent the defendant.    The plaintiff, a mother-in-law is making statements about perfection.  Yes being perfect"
Judge:          "Is that the young man there?"
Maverick:      "Yes your honor. "
Judge:          "Does your client wish to make a plea?"
Maverick:      "Yes he does your honor.  Guilty as charged"
Judge:          "Before I sentence the defendant, councilor … (3 comments)

the maverick builder: "Jack London: Writer or Marketing Genius" by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/26/10 11:47 PM
"Jack London: Writer and Marketing Genius"
The Call of the Wild, Mr. London's most famous book is one that you may remember from your high school days.  Mr. London wrote over 50 books in his short lifetime.  Some of them non-fiction and a few autobiographical.
Jack London is a Marketing genius because he always . . .
Before I explain, let me point out that Mr. London was a power writer.  He wrote adventure stories and tales packed with energy, conflict and character.  The lead character maybe man or animal, but you always identified with them.
Jack London was a He-Man.  … (3 comments)

the maverick builder: "Toot Sweets" by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/26/10 11:28 PM
"Imitation Sugar is Sweet, Too!"
Imitation isn't only the sincerest form of flattery; it'salso a power way to learn new business skills.
Mark Twain learned how to write by imitating other writers. As a youth he set newspaper stories in type for the newspaper.Tedious work, but it gave him the chance to imitate writers.  He learned the fundamentals of great writing by copying.
I hear the skepticism, "Mark Twain was a great author."
Well you're a great inspector.Your a professional inspector.And you drive a lot.
Have you ever walked down a street you normally drive?

the maverick builder: Fall Down 7 Times, Get Up 8 by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/20/10 06:21 PM
When I am invited to speak at events I always prepare myself for the same questions. What is tht formula for Success?I smile and they frown."It's quite simple" I say, really. "Double your rate of failure." I then pause for effect as they hem and haw.
"You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn't at all. You can be discouraged by failure - or you can learn from it." I finish with "Go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because, remember, that's where you will find success."
So here are a couple quotes on mistakes:

the maverick builder: A Shareparian Prose "To Hire or Not To Hire" by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/20/10 10:59 AM
Many people read "do-it-yourself" books and think they now know everything about construction, home improvement, and even home inspections. But that's not really the case. With his firm Advantage Inspection based in Raleigh, Dave Park serves the entire Triangle area of North Carolina, and talks here about why it's important to hire a professional home inspector to carry out your next home inspection, instead of trying to do it yourself...
Every year the number of home inspections rises. Every year the price of home inspections rises. Every year the "do it yourself" subculture rises.
The "do it yourself" subculture is here … (2 comments)

the maverick builder: Love - Hate Copy. . . by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/20/10 08:59 AM
And I'm reminded of the days, many years ago, when I volunteered as a Pet Adoption Counselor with the SPCA. Looking back, I must have been training for what I do now. I had lots of enthusiasm. People often teased, "You're selling cats!" Sure enough, many visitors went up with a crate holding a furry bundle of joy.
Our Volunteer Coordinator kept reminding us, "Don't judge the visitors. You're not going home with this person. The adopter who drives you crazy may be the best thing that ever happened to a dog."
True.
And copy works the same way. We don't judge … (3 comments)

the maverick builder: Is Common Sense a "Paine" by Dave park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/20/10 08:04 AM

Common Sense is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine. It was first published anonymously on January 10, 1776, during the American Revolution. Common Sense, signed "Written by an Englishman", became an immediate success.
Paine wrote and reasoned in a style that common people understood; forgoing the philosophy and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, Paine structured Common Sense like a sermon and relied on Biblical references to make his case to the people.   Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as, "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era"
One of the major concerns in the … (6 comments)

the maverick builder: Basic Decks 101 by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/20/10 07:44 AM
Even if you undertook the task of building your own deck, you understand the large investment (both monetary and in time) that went into the project. Decks add beauty and value to a home, and are often the family's favorite place on lovely afternoons. In order to protect that investment, deck waterproofing is nearly as important as making sure your basement is dry and safe from water damage.

After the completion of your deck, either you or the contracted builder should seal the wood with a water-resistant coating. Water-resistant sealants are painted on the wood, covering the entire deck. This … (1 comments)

the maverick builder: Green and Blue Make Red! by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/19/10 03:51 PM

It appears that "Green" is making builders "Blue" these days.
A new poll shows that people who once put a huge emphasis on the government's green efforts now have other issues they care about more. The latest Pew Research Center poll shows that the economy and job market have jumped to the top of the priority list for most people. Last January, 75 percent of Americans polled said that the economy should be a top priority, and in a year's time, that has jumped to 85 percent. On the other hand, however, protecting the environment has fallen from 56 percent a year … (2 comments)

the maverick builder: Acronymns aka ADRDU by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/17/10 04:01 PM
Today's AcronymnsYahoo - You Always Have Other Options!
In this time of economic crisis, the only thing we have to fear is ... acronyms, suggests Louise Radnofsky in the Wall Street Journal . The idea that there is not a government program that can't be distilled into a bunch of letters was popularized, of course, by Franklin Delano Roosevelt, or FDR.
Not to be outdone, the Obama Administration introduced the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, or RAT, intended to sniff out "waste, fraud and abuse in the $787 billion bailout plan."
Then there is SNAP which stands for the Supplemental Nutrition … (1 comments)

the maverick builder: Twitter Makes a Big Splash by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/16/10 09:07 PM
For only being a single website it sure has made a splash. Although it shares some of the same ideas as Facebook or MySpace and Blogger its incredible ease of use coupled with its limit of one hundred and forty character micro posts this user generated website is breaking all kinds of records. Twitter has also been making a lot of news so if you haven't been keeping up here is what you have been missing.
Due to Twitter allowing third party users to create applications to complement the websites experience for its user's big names have gotten on the band … (1 comments)

the maverick builder: Is this your Mothers Mold? by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/16/10 08:52 PM
Molds are ubiquitous in nature, and mold spores are a common component of household and workplace dust. However, when spores are present in large quantities, they can be a health hazard to humans, potentially causing allergic reactions and respiratory problems.
Molds and fungi are found everywhere inside and outside, and can grow on almost any substance when moisture is present. When molds reproduce they make spores, which can be carried by air currents. When these spores land on a moist surface that is suitable for life, they begin to grow. Mold is normally found indoors at levels that do not affect … (4 comments)

the maverick builder: "Something in the Air" or PCB's by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/16/10 08:29 PM
"Something in the air" takes on a whole new meaning today than that magic spring night in the 60's or the Tom Petty song.  Mold, Fungi, Radon, Chinese Drywall and now PCBs.
Polychlorinated biphenyls or PCB's have been around since the 1940's.  They where manmade chemicals that were widely used in construction materials and electrical products.  They were banned by Congress in 1976 because of a "concern" about their health and environmental effects.
The use and disposal of PCBs before the phase-out resulted in their widespread presence in our soil, air, water and food. Despite the federal ban, they remain present … (0 comments)

the maverick builder: Article Spinning 101 by Dave Park "The Maverick Builder" - 02/15/10 08:26 PM
A lot of people make a living by writing articles on the internet, and there are a lot of sites and portals where a writers' article is published and displayed. For experienced writers, the art of article spinning is a must-have attribute.
Article spinning is the method of taking one article and creating several different unique version of it through the use of special tags. Search engines regard each version of a submitted article as a unique article, and when submitted to article directories, it is imperative to have unique articles so that they are each indexed.
The term article cloning, … (2 comments)

the maverick builder: Mark Twain's Cork! - 02/14/10 08:52 AM
"Taking a pledge will not make bad liquor into good, but it will improve it."  Mark Twain
Every leader, supervisor, coach, team member and parent has been told of the value of giving positive feedback.  We've heard reasons why.  We've heard we don't do it enough.  We've learned all of the basics about giving positive feedback successfully: make it timely, make it specific, and when giving positive feedback consider sharing it publicly.
"Everybody's private motto: It's better to be popular than right."  Mark Twain
All of this is good advice, but it falls short of the mark if we want to make … (2 comments)
