monroe la: How to Save a Choking Pet - 04/14/12 10:01 AM
So good to know.  I don't even want to think about how horrible it would be to lose one of mine right in front of my eyes.
Thanks so much for writing this, Toni.

monroe la: Spring flowers in the Monroe area. - 03/02/12 02:45 PM

TULIPS at KIROLI PARK
It's been a little gloomy for the past couple of days, but the spring flowers don't seem to mind!  I guess the 80+degree temps are encouraging them to start showing up.
These lovely tulips are at Kiroli Park in West Monroe. The azaleas are just starting to open, too, so the park and other parts of Monroe and West Monroe will be really beautiful for the next few weeks.
I have a spectacular dogwood tree in my backyard which should be in full bloom in 7-10 days.  The buds are so fat that I know they … (0 comments)

monroe la: Today is Arbor Day in Louisiana! - 01/20/12 02:10 PM
The dead of winter, as home gardeners and landscape professionals know, is the perfect time to plant a tree. From February 27 through March 4, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry hosts its annual Shade Tree Sale at its offices throughout the state. More than a million superior genetics hardwood and pine seedlings have been distributed to the public at bargain basement prices during the sale since it began in 1976.Planting a tree is a truly unselfish act. You don’t plant them for yourself, but as a gift for the generations to come. To plant a tree is an act … (0 comments)

monroe la: School is back in session! - 08/17/11 10:19 AM
School started here on Monday.
I'm too old to have a student at the elementary school only a block away, but I consider myself to be very lucky living so close to this wonderful school. Why? Every morning I hear the principal's voice on the loudspeaker say, "Good morning, boys and girls! Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance."
It's a wonderful way to start the day--for the students and for me!
PS.Be sure to have your eyes open for those precious ones while driving near the school zones.

monroe la: Plans to Save Georgia Tucker School Property! - 03/23/11 12:50 AM
Georgia Tucker Elementary School is the oldest existing elementary school in Monroe.  The school was built in 1920 on land donated by Colonel Frank P. Stubbs in honor of his mother, Georgia Tucker Stubbs.
The school is one of the last remaining examples of Mediterranean Revival architecture in northern Louisiana.  The architecture style came into prominence in the 1920s and 1930s evolving from rekindled interest in Italian Renaissance palaces and seaside villas dating from the sixteenth century.  This style is primarily found in California and Florida, typically multi-story and based on a rectangular floor plan, and features massive, symmetrical primary facades.  Tile roofs, … (0 comments)

monroe la: Today is FLAG DAY--Retire a US FLAG with DIGNITY. - 06/14/10 03:42 PM

When a flag is so tattered that it can no longer serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. The American Legion, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA and other organizations regularly conduct flag retirement ceremonies, often on Flag Day.
If you live … (0 comments)
