virginia beach: Not Much Damage In Glenwood After Nor"easter - 11/15/09 11:02 AM
Not much damage in the Glenwood area of Virginia Beach after the Nor'easter.  There were some fences down, Independence Blvd had a high water area but nothing like happened in the last tropical storm we had.  Most of the damage was due to the 75 mph wind that blew for a while.  Luckily we don't live in one of the areas affected by the tides.

virginia beach: Robins Still Have to Eat In The Noreaster in Virginia Beach - 11/13/09 09:49 AM
Robins still have to eat during the Noreaster in Virginia Beach.  I was getting ready to take out a big plant with berries tha the birds love because it had fallen over due to the cold weather.  The storm came so the plant stayed.  Lucky for this little fellow because he came and gorged himself on berries.  The picture was hard to take because he kept moving.  This was taken between two raindrops on the window which caused the blurring on both sides.  I think I might have been moving a bit also.

virginia beach: Robins Still Have to Eat In The Noreaster in Glenwood - 11/13/09 09:44 AM
Robings still have to eat in the Noreaster in the Glenwood area.  I was getting ready to take out a big weed in my yard that supplies berries for the birds because it had fallen over due to the cold weather.  The storm came so the plant stayed.  Lucky for this little fellow because he came and gorged himself on berries.

virginia beach: How To Fix That UGLY MLS Bathroom Picture - 11/04/09 07:40 AM
Here is an easy way to fix that ugly MLS bathroom picture you were going to take.  STOP and don't do it.  Take a picture of the park instead or the gateway coming into the neighborhood or just a nice picture of an apple pie or something but please not the ugly bathroom picture.  The bottom picture is of a retention pond at Grayson Pond in Virginia Beach taken around sunset or so.

virginia beach: Homes With Chinese Drywall Get Tax Relief in Virginia Beach - 10/27/09 03:21 PM
City Council today voted to give homes with Chinese drywall tax relief in Virginia Beach.  The homes will basically be valued at $100 and the homeowner will pay taxes on the land.  So far just 15 homes in  Highland Parrish are affected.
Chinese drywall has been associated with multiple problems including deteriating wiring, airconditioning coils and affecting the health of the occupants.  Not much is being done to help the homeowners so I think every little bit helps.  Insurance companies are not taking on homes with the problem or canceling the policies outright.  Builders are long gone, warranties are no good because … (1 comments)

virginia beach: Get Square Virginia - 10/26/09 03:24 PM
Get Square Virginia (edit/delete)
Get Square Virginia.  What a title.  I was just reading about about a program that may help some of the residents of Virginia Beach.  It a new tax amnesty program that runs during Fiscal Year 2010.  It is called "Get Square VA" and establishes a 60-day period during which, with certain exceptions, taxpayers who have an outstanding bill or delinquent return for any tax administered by the Virginia Department of Taxation ("TAX") may receive amnesty. Get Square VA allows the taxpayer to pay only the tax due and half the interest on eligible outstanding bills and delinquent returns; … (0 comments)

virginia beach: Last Flowers of Summer? - 10/24/09 10:16 AM

I was in my yard in Glenwood the other day taking in the sights and thought I would share some of the last flowers of summer even though it is the middle of Oct.  Virginia Beach is a wonderful place to live, especially for the weather.

virginia beach: Another Bad MLS Picture - 10/23/09 01:32 PM
Here is another bad MLS picture for a house in Virginia Beach, Va.  This is not my picture but I was cleaning it up to put on my website.  With just a few minutes of Photo Shop Elements it went from a bad picture to an ok picture.
Mostly what I did was cloned the floors, the dishwasher and the cabinet to make the flash go away.   I also used a little bit of blurring on the dishwasher and the cabinet.  I also went to Enhance, Shadows/Brightness and darkend the Highlights by about 17%.
I worked on the verticals for the … (7 comments)

virginia beach: Chinese Drywall in Virginia Beach - 10/18/09 02:18 PM
There are an unknown number of homes built with Chinese Drywall in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake.  Along with all the known problems comes a new one.
Insurers are dropping homeowners or not renewing them based on the fact that a home is built with Chinese Drywall.  Homeowners are submitting claims to the insurance companies and they are saying that this is a "pre-existing" condition and they will not pay claims for the damage caused.  Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute, agreed that homeowners policies were never meant to cover "faulty, inadequate or defective" workmanship, construction or materials.

virginia beach: Never Too Dark in Virginia Beach - 10/11/09 10:36 AM
It is never to dark in Virginia Beach to take a picture.  I like taking pictures of the sun as it is coming up and in the evenings.  This is a picture of a lake on the Honey Bee Golf Course in the Glenwood section of Virginia Beach.  Often I get a good sky but the ground is dark.  This is mostly because of the limitations of my camera (Panasonic DMC FZ 18).  It just can't get all the lightness and darkness in at the same levels.  That is where Photo Shop Elements (PE) comes in.  What I did was take my shot and then went into PE and increased … (2 comments)

virginia beach: Why I Like A Small Sensor Camera Part V - 10/05/09 07:35 PM
I have done several posts on my camera, a Panasonic DMC-FZ18 (newest model is a DMC-FZ38), but not for a while.  For those of you who don't know what it is, it is a bridge camera.  Somewhere between a Point and Shoot and a full fledged DSLR.  The lens goes from a 28mm to it seems like a forever over 800 mm.  To show you what it can do here are a few pictures.
This is at 28 mm in Virginia Beach at 40th St

This is at full zoom looking down the boadwalk nine blocks away to King Neptune

virginia beach: Home Inspection in Virginia Beach - 09/30/09 10:33 AM
I just had a home inspection in Virginia Beach on one of my listings.  The inspector said that the toilets were leaking at the base.  The owner had just had them reset this month.  We couldn't see any leaks or see any water around the base.  I called the inspector and asked him why he thought the toilets were leaking.  He said because his moisture meter indicated water in the vinyl around the toilets.  I said that doesn't mean they are leaking it just means the vinly is wet and could have been caused by several different problems.
I thought maybe he should … (5 comments)

virginia beach: Ants Reading My Mail - 09/22/09 01:57 PM
We have had some good rain in Virgina Beach a few weeks ago.  I guess the ants that live below my mailbox in Glenwood decided to abandon ship as they invaded my mailbox eggs and all.  I put my hand in for my mail and came out with hundreds of ants along with it.

virginia beach: Photo Shop Elements - 04/08/09 01:48 PM
I was doing Easter pictures early as my granddaughter came up to visit me in Virginia Beach.  As I was processing pictures I thought I would try some of the features in Photo Shop Elements.  I have 2.0 which is ancient but works pretty good.  The first picture is normal.  The second I used emboss and the third was the spotlight feature from Filters.  I think they are all pretty neat.  Of course I was using my Panasonic DMC FZ 18.

virginia beach: What a sunset!!!! - 04/05/09 04:36 PM
I was driving home from a listing and had my trusty camera, a Panasonic DMC FZ 18 with me.  I love this camera because it not only has a 28 mm wide lens but it also has a telephoto that can go out to almost forever.  This was taken from The Lakes subdivsion in Virginia Beach.
This is at 28 mm wide.

This is about 500 mm

This is about 700 mm with what Panasonic calls EZ Zoom (not digital zoom)

virginia beach: Atlas Van Lines Says Welcome Home - 01/31/09 08:41 AM
Atlas Van Lines has classified Virginia as a moving destination.  I could have told them that if they would have asked.  People are moving away from states with hard hit industries like automobiles and heavy manafacturing.  Believe it or not many midwesterners are headed to warmer climates and brighter economic prospects.
Atlas said they moved 4,210 families into the state as opposed to 2,968 out.  Washington, DC had the highest gain as did North Carolina.  The overall market for moving has cooled by 9% as has most of the economy.
So remember me as your referral agent of choice when your … (0 comments)

virginia beach: Variences Harder To Get At The Beach - 01/31/09 08:30 AM
In 2008 all but a handful of variances were approved by the Board of Zoning Appeals in Virginia Beach.  This will change in 2009 as the courts recently raised the legal threshold for allowing variances.  The new test is "whether, without the variance, the owner loses the right to use the property in every meaningfulway"
Of course, the people on the board still have say over what is a hardship or not but city staff are pushing hard to make sure the law is upheld.  The city can be and has been sued over giving variances that wern't legal so they should … (1 comments)

virginia beach: Cheasapeake worries about new Beach Hospital - 01/31/09 08:16 AM
The Chesapeake Regional Medical Center is objecting to a joint hospital proposed in Virginia Beach by Sentara and Bon Secours.  The hospital will be located by the amphitheatre and will be a 200 bed facility.  Sentara has already been approved for a 120 bed facility but Bon Secours wants to add 80 beds.  The hospital will just carry the Sentara name.
Chesapeake officials are worried because they think that the hospital will impact them and damage competition.  Fully 18% of hospital admmissions come from Virginia Beach as well as 10% of outpatient procedures.  The Sentara system is a powerful draw because … (0 comments)

virginia beach: Emergency Beacons for Boaters Going Digital - 01/21/09 09:14 PM
For all you boaters in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Portsmouth, here is some good information.  Along with our tv transmissions going digital soon so are the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) for boaters are going digital on Feb 1.  The coast guard along with other rescue personal will only respond to digital 406-MHZ beacons.  The digital beacons are 50 times more powerful then the analog ones.  Satellites will be able to track the beacon to 100 yards while at the same time the beacons will not give false positives meaning the coast guard will be on station quicker.
The beacons must … (0 comments)
