san diego zoo: It's time to strut your stuff at the San Diego Zoo! - 04/24/12 03:10 PM

Today's post is a guest post, a collaborative effort ofRussel Ray, San Diego home inspectorand owner of Russel Ray Photos, and Eric Cooper,a photographer with Russel Ray Photosand a budding WordPress guru.Hope you enjoy it, especially the pictures.
There are quite a few free-ranging peafowl at the San Diego Zoo. The peahens pretty much stay hidden most of the time, but right now the peacocks are strutting their stuff in all their magnificent glory, and making a lot of racket, too. Excepting for the noise, it's almost as if they have their own little fashion walkway in Paris.

san diego zoo: Out & About San Diego with Jim Frimmer, Your Mission Valley Realtor — Man-eating plants at the San Diego Zoo - 06/28/11 09:33 PM

Man-eating plants at the San Diego Zoo
Okay, maybe not truly man-eating plants, but they do like a little meat, usually in the form of spiders, flies, ants, and other small insects, and you can see them at the world-famous San Diego Zoo, which is just a few miles from your Mission Valley condo:

I know it's tempting to rush to see the pandas, polar bears, tigers, giraffes, and elephants, but I would encourage you to slow down and look at the animals and vegetation between the major exhibits.

The best place to get a pedicure....
....is the San Diego Zoo, but only if you're an elephant!

Elephants in the wild might walk several miles a day looking for food, and their feet have been built to do that walking. When the elephants have all their food provided for them, like in a zoo, they don't have to walk as much to get to it:

Just because they don't do a lot of walking in a zoo doesn't mean that their hooves and nails simply quit growing. If they don't get … (8 comments)

Speechless Sunday(with a little bit of text)
We had a threesome at the San Diego Zoo this morning, each of us with our own Canon camera: Eric with a Rebel, me with a Rebel XSi, and Russel with a 550D. Between the three of us we took 647 pictures. One of my pictures is of a one-month-old Koala. I cropped it so you could see the baby better:

It's useful to go to the San Diego Zoo at different times of the year and at different times of the day. Occasionally you'll get lucky and see something like this striped hyena:

It's peacock strutting time at the San Diego Zoo!
The San Diego Zoo has many pea fowl (peacocks and pea hens) which roam the grounds. They are local birds, so they can fly away if they want to. Obviously these birds are smart because they choose not to leave the Zoo. Uh, der. The most flying they do is to and from a tree or rooftop.

Here are five pea hens wandering around looking for their special someone.

Easter Sunday at the San Diego Zoo
I go to the San Diego Zoo quite often for one or two hours, but on special holidays — New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, July Fourth, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas — I'll go for a longer period, sometimes up to six hours, and enjoy everything that the Zoo has to offer.
Here are a few pictures from today's trip to the Zoo.
The flamingos were busy building their nests. They look about half finished, but it seems they are getting a later start this year. Maybe it has something to … (16 comments)

Women? Are your guys like that?
I spent this morning at the San Diego Zoo, which is not far from your Mission Valley condo.

I usually go in the afternoon since I'm really not much of a morning person. The Zoo is far less crowded in the morning, though. There were lots of people dressed in Easter outfits, but I didn't see anyone with a basket of Easter eggs except for these two :

They chew funny
While I was standing at the Zoo in front of the camels and llamas, a family with two children were standing next to me. The young son, the oldest of the children, kept commenting about how "they chew funny." I think he was right.

The San Diego Zoo
For the past few months the San Diego Zoo has been undergoing major renovations that had the front entrance closed, which meant that you had to enter the Zoo through the exit. Maybe they were taking a cue from Microsoft where you click on the START icon to shut down your computer. Anyway...
Following are some pictures from the Zoo taken this weekend. The first one is the new plaza at the front entrance. It is much nicer and wider than the old entrance.

Right across from the front entrance is Flamingo Lagoon:

Wordless Wednesdayfrom the San Diego Zoo
Since I listed a property last night, I rewarded myself by going to the San Diego Zoo for a couple of hours this morning.
It was an overcast morning, and quite cool, and these two rhinos were just relaxing:

It's also mating time at the Zoo for many of the animals, so I don't know if those two were just waiting for the sun to come out or if they had just finished doing the deed.

Speechless Sunday (with a little bit of text)
I love going to the San Diego Zoo and watching the flamingos in Flamingo Lagoon. However, flamingos aren't the only birds in Flamingo Lagoon. Along with the Zoo's birds there, which include a pair of crested screamers and the flamingos, there are a lot of wild birds — herons, egrets, and ducks — that stop by to get water and food, and to play around.
The mallard ducks yesterday were in a particularly playful mood, although there might have been a little courtship behavior mixed in, too.
