old town: 527 Margaret Street - Key West - An Old House Made New - 04/26/15 05:39 AM

The paint is barely dry in the newly rebuilt home at 527 Margaret Street in Old Town Key West. I got a chance to meet the new owners, Kirk Thompson and Brett Burch, this past week. The owners explained to me that they were visiting Key West in January when the passed by the house which was then still under construction. The builders (Paul Misch and his son-n-law John Tutlewski) invited Brett and Kirk inside to see what was being done. They liked what they saw so much that they signed a contract to buy the place before it was complete. … (3 comments)

old town: 812 Windsor Lane - Sitting Pretty in Old Town Key West - 04/23/15 06:40 AM

The simple home at 812 Windsor Lane in Key West did not always look so neat and proper.  I remember driving past that house several years ago on repeated occasions when someone would ask "How much is that house"?  I would always respond "It's not for sale" to which they would reply something like "We'll I want to buy it when it is for sale." The house looked pretty rundown back then. The front yard was over-grown. The place looked like it had been abandoned. But then in 2008 the family who had owned this house since it was first built … (1 comments)

old town: 1111 Packer Street, Key West, Florida - 04/22/15 09:21 AM

The newly listed home at 1111 Packer Street will appeal to a buyer who is looking for an eventual retirement home in Key West but who wants a place that can be used as a vacation rental to help reduce purchase and maintenance costs. This home has been thoughtfully renovated and has all the attributes that make it very desirable both as a place to live and also a place to spend a vacation.
I looked around in my old shoebox and found the black and white photo above which shows 1111 Packer Street fifty years ago. If you compare that photo … (0 comments)

old town: 617 Ashe Street, Key West, Florida - 04/21/15 10:25 AM

I know I'm not the only person who upon arrival in Key West the very first time was amazed at the number of incredible old homes packed together in the Old Town area. I walked the streets up and down and back and forth looking at the  houses. I took pictures of the places I thought were amazing as if to build my dream book of places I would like to live someday. I took pictures of forlorn places thinking they could be fixed up and made right. Key West back then was much different than it is today: there were … (0 comments)

old town: 2312 North Roosevelt Blvd. Key West - Deveopment Opportunity! - 04/19/15 06:38 AM

Just Listed by Preferred Properties - 2312 North Roosevelt Boulevard in Key West, Florida. This nearly 20,000 sq ft lot irregularly shaped rectangle (102' X 194') frontage on US 1 as it makes its way into the Old Town corridor. It is located opposite the Key West Yacht Club.

I dug into my old shoebox and found an aerial photo from the not too distant pass taken by Ty Symroski and Wendy Tucker.  I have added arrows to point out the location of 2312 N. Roosevelt which is shown just opposite the Yacht Club. The small Hilton Haven enclave is located on … (3 comments)

old town: 818 Carsten Lane, Key West, Florida - 04/12/15 07:19 AM

They don't make Key West cottages any cuter or more perfect than 818 Carsten Lane.  If they did or if they could, everybody would own one. But they don't.  Some places are so special that there is only one. And this is that one!
I found an old photo of 818 Carsten Lane taken fifty years ago. The house was dramatically updated a few years ago. Today the place is picture perfect down to the replica mailbox out front that greets guests as they approach this smart two bedroom two bath cottage style home. The listing Realtor, not me, describes this home … (0 comments)

old town: 1019 Elgin Lane, Key West - Bank Owned Fixer-Upper - 04/08/15 12:32 PM

Just Listed 1019 Elgin Lane Key West. This is a Bank Owned property located in a desirable Old Town location near the Historic Seaport.
I searched the historic Sanborn Fire Maps and found this house shown on the 1889 map (when it was then designated as 909 1/2). Hidalgo Lane was the name of the two block long "alley" that runs from White Street to Grinnell Street. That name was later changed to Elgin Lane. Today most of the homes on the lane have been updated. This is a property where a renovation of sorts was started but that was abandoned some … (1 comments)

old town: 820 Carsten Lane, Key West - An Old Town Suprise - 03/11/15 03:33 AM

When I started this blog eight years ago I realized that one of the things that draws people to Key West is the simple way we spend our lives. If you watch any of those reality tv shows about million dollar listings in Beverly Hills or New York you get to see houses for people that live the fast life, the showy life, the I'm very important life. While I amdit I watch those shows, I don't aspire to live in those places. Life in the slow lane is fine with me.

Just listed, but not by me, is … (2 comments)

old town: 812 Johnson Ln, Key West - Come On-A My Open House - 03/08/15 05:20 AM

I am holding an OPEN HOUSE today between 12:00 to 2:00 at 812 Johnson Lane and I would love for my Dear Readers and tourists alike to come up and see me and this wonderful Key West cottage.  The location is near perfect - a quiet little lane located three blocks from Duval Street and three to four blocks from most of the gyms and yoga studios in Key West. A buyer who is looking for a quiet location near the action but not so close to be bothered by the noise will love this place.

812 Johnson … (3 comments)

old town: Don't Buy a House in Key West from a Mr. POTATO HEAD! - 02/28/15 04:55 AM

One of the very best Christmas gifts I ever received was given to me by my big sister back in the early 1950's - it was a Mr. POTATO HEAD. Unlike the Mr. Potato Head OF today, you needed a real potato to make this toy work. Today's version is made out of plastic and to me that is just wrong.

The thing I liked about Mr. Potato Head was that I could make him become whoever I wanted him to be. He could look happy, for sure. But I could put his ears or nose in a funny … (1 comments)

old town: Something Big is Happening in Key West Real Estate - 01/17/15 05:38 AM

If you're one of those would-be buyers who spends too much "work time" sitting in front of your office monitor searching new listings or back-on-the-market listings on the Key West Association of Realtors mls website or scavenger sites like Zillow or Trulia, you may have noticed two separate phenomena.  First, many of the recent higher priced listings have gone under contract within a matter of days after being listed. Second, many of the listings that have seem to have been "one the market forever" have also recently gone under contract. I think we are going through another "I'm gonna get … (2 comments)

old town: 812 Johnson Lane - Old Town - Key West - 11/18/14 09:13 AM

It's time to talk turkey about 812 Johnson Lane in Key West. This Old Town cottage style home was completely renovated earlier this year. Just about every part of the inside was replaced or updated including all a new kitchen with stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops; new floors throughout; new bathroom with travertine marble shower and floor; new whole house air conditioner; and crow molding. A bath and laundry room were added to the guest cottage at the rear which also includes an outdoor shower. Finally, the front of the property now offers bricked off street parking for two … (0 comments)

old town: 416 Margaret Street, Key West - an Old Town Beauty - 11/17/14 09:57 AM

The house at 416 Margaret Street really is one of the prettiest homes in Old Town. The listing Realtor, not me, describes this Key West home this way:
"Two blocks from the Historic Seaport and 4 blocks from Duval, this classic home embodies the charm of Old Key West. With original Dade County Pine throughout, the first floor features 2 bedrooms and 2 full baths, living and dining area, and kitchen with granite countertops and top of the line appliances. The lovely covered lanai is the perfect spot to relax poolside. The upstairs studio has a kitchenette, full bath … (1 comments)

old town: 626 William Street, Key West, Florida - 10/16/14 10:34 AM

626 William Street, Key West, is now offered for sale at the asking price of $2,950,000.  This home is one of fifteen Key West properties that Broadway impresario Jerry Herman (Mame, Hello Dolly, and La Cage aux Folles) and his former partner Marty Finkelstein renovated.

Before I started to write today's blog I decided to do a bit or research about Herman. He and his partner flew to the Florida Keys for a weekend in 1984. They met up with a local Realtor who showed them two nearly identical houses in the 700 block of Fleming Street across from … (1 comments)

old town: 326 William Street - Key West - 07/21/14 07:15 AM

326 William Street in Key West, Florida is located within a block of the historic Key West Seaport. Most of the houses in this immediate area were built in the last half of the 19th Century. The seaport was the hub of Key West commerce. The 300 block of William Street is noted as having some of the oldest homes on the island.

For some odd reason the 300 block of William Street was omitted from the 1889 edition of the Sanborn Fire Map. But it did appear in the 1892 edition. That map shows numerous small lots … (1 comments)

old town: 1028 Whitehead St., Key West Bank Owned Property - 07/10/14 11:21 AM

The listing Realtor describes the new Bank Owned property at 1028 Whitehead Street as an
"Old Town corner location with two legal residential units & two buildings designed to fit your imagination! Open the fence gate and realize the potential associated with this space. Design your dream complex with the two existing separate buildings. Previously, a commercial office existed downstairs as well."

I fished around in my old shoebox and found a couple of photos that show 1028 Whitehead Street as the two properties appeared about fifty years ago. Back then the corner building was … (0 comments)

old town: 1024 Virginia Street - Key West Renovation Project - 07/07/14 01:41 AM

New to the Key West real estate market is 1024 Virginia Street which is located in the South of Truman area of Old Town.  The house is located midway in the block between Varela Street to the east and Watson Street to the west. I looked at the Historic Sanborn Fire Maps to discern when this house was built. The first time it was identified on a map was in 1912. On that map this house was identified as being 1024 Sodus Court. It is the same house. Virginia Street was not a through street in 1912. A large house … (0 comments)

old town: 635 William Street - Key West, Florida - Luxury Home - 06/17/14 12:14 PM

The house at 635 William Street is a bit of a rarity in Old Town Key West because it has fairly deep front yard. Passers-by and internet house hunters may mistake the house as being a simple cigar maker's cottage that sits on a large Old Town lot. The lot is impressive, but this is no cigar maker's cottage. Instead, 635 William Street is gracious 1670 sq ft home with three bedrooms, three baths, a large great room with doors that open out to a remarkable pool and entertaining area. Before we look inside, let's consider the history for just … (0 comments)

old town: 1110 Elgin Lane - Key West, Florida - Historic Old Town - 06/13/14 03:01 AM

Recently added to the Key West real estate market is 1110 Elgin Lane which is shown in photos taken in 2014 and 1965.  If you compare the two photos you will see that decorative shutters were added and the front posts were replaced with some gingerbread attached. Otherwise, the house seems to look pretty much the same today as it did nearly fifty years ago. 1110 Elgin first appeared in the 1882 Sanborn Fire Map for Key West as #H  Elgin Street.  The numerical street identifier 1110 Elgin was added in the 1889 Sanborn Map. So we know this … (1 comments)
