tucson: Full Moon Over Tucson on Saturday Night - 11/20/10 10:30 PM

~ Full Moon Over Tucson ~
Actually, Sunday will be the full moon.
From Gates Pass this evening, though, you would have been hard put to tell the difference.  The setting sun painted the tops of the mountains in the foreground with its deepest color of the day.
You really do have to come visit this place sometime this winter.  It's magical.  It really is.

tucson: Rainy Day Open House: Tucson Estates 2, Tucson, AZ - 03/07/10 08:40 PM

It rained like the dickens all afternoon!  I drove out to Ryan Airfield to see a new airplane.
Driving home from Ryan Airfield, I saw Janice Kauffman's Tierra Antigua Realty Sign at the guardhouse entrance to Tucson Estates II.
"OPEN HOUSE"
1951 S Diamond D Drive, Tucson, AZ 85713
You already know how I feel about Tucson Estates II if you're a regular reader of my blog.  My Darlin' and I chose this mountain foothills community in 1998, and we love being surrounded on three sides of this green desert community by Tucson Mountain Park.

tucson: Gates Pass Sunrise: Tucson, Arizona - 02/28/10 05:35 PM

It's a sunrise photo ~ not a sunset.  We've had cloud cover and rain this past week, and I greeted the day on Saturday at Gates Pass, all the way out at the west end of Speedway Blvd.  "Red sky in morning, sailor take warning" was an apt saying for our day.  A front moved in, and it started raining last night.  Today, Sunday, it's still raining, and I think it's time for an afternoon nap!

tucson: Friday's Photo: A Living Statue In My Backyard! - 10/09/09 10:32 PM

My folks lived in Clavarack, New York for three decades.  When I'd go visit them, I got used to seeing concrete statues of deer people had placed in their front yards.
I never understood the desire to do that.  I'd much rather have my back yard graced by the presence of living, breathing statues from time to time.
This lady of the desert graced us with her presence this morning at 6:45 a.m.

tucson: Value Added For Your Home: Don Ross of Tucson, Arizona is an Artist In Steel - 10/08/09 10:28 PM

Don Ross is the owner of Designs In Steel, a Tucson company that designs, fabricates, and installs some of the coolest functional art you've ever seen.
Quiet, unassuming, and tremendously competent, he's just the kind of person you want to hire to create a blend of beauty and functionality for your home.
REALTORS are often asked what improvements add value to a home, and then the followup question:  "What improvements will bring a return on my investment?"  Don's creations are the answer to that second question.
Look at the double arched doors to the right.  Created from native mesquite, Saguaro … (14 comments)

tucson: Unusual Wildlife In Tucson, AZ: "A Wonderful Bird Is the Pelican" - 09/20/09 01:31 AM

A pelican in Tucson, Arizona?
I was shooting a video with REALTOR Kevin Wood, Realty Execs just down the street.  Sitting at the kitchen table with the Flip Video camera, I was asking Kevin about the home he had just listed.
"Just down the street, there's a lake" he said.  I had to see for myself.  What I saw took my mind back to my high school english days, with the poet Ogden Nash.
A wonderful bird is the Pelican.
His beak can hold more than his belican.
He can hold in his beak

tucson: Photo of the Week: Desert Storm Over Tucson's Avra Valley - 09/08/09 06:01 AM

Desert Storm on Labor Day, 2009:  Hiking in the Tucson Mountains, I followed the progression of a desert thunderstorm from its early stage (right) to its maturity (above.)
The remains of Hurricane Jimena have left significant moisture in the air here in Tucson over the past four days.
Combine that moisture with our summer heat in the desert, and we have the makings of some of the world's most spectacular thunderstorms.
Wide open spaces allow us a front-seat view.
The first photo on the right was taken approximately one hour before sunset, and the one above was set afire by … (44 comments)

tucson: Rainers - I Need Your Help - 3 Office Suite In Central Tucson, AZ Needs A Tenant - 08/24/09 10:27 AM

For two years now, I've turned to my friends on The Active Rain Real Estate Network for help, and I've never been disappointed.
You read my post on 7/11, Unemployed At 60 (But Not In The Least Discouraged).  You rallied around me with the most encouraging comments, phone calls and emails, and I'm so very grateful for all of you.
If that had to happen, the timing couldn't have been better.  I had just renegotiated my lease (on this beautiful office suite to your right) downward by 23%, and the landlord and leasing company couldn't have been more helpful.

tucson: Please Welcome Arizona's Newest Rainmaker: Sandy McKee with Sunstreet Mortgage - 08/12/09 08:20 AM

"I'm first and foremost a father and a husband..."
When I read those words on Sandy McKee's profile page on the Active Rain Real Estate Network, I knew I was going to like this man.
Sandy's passions include golf, and Tucson's one of the world's premier destinations for the sport.
Sandy McKee is a loan officer.
"Obtaining a home loan should be a good experience from start to finish. I am a no nonsense type of loan officer. If something needs to be done, I just do it. There are no secrets to being successful."
This philosophy explains why, after … (8 comments)

tucson: Icon of the Desert: The Giant Saguaro Cactus - 07/28/09 12:17 AM

2,000 of those tiny seeds, when dried out, will easily fit into the cap of your canteen.  Oh.  You're not from the desert southwest, and you don't have a canteen.  Okay.  They'll fit into the plastic cap of your G-2 sport drink bottle.
Either way, what you're looking at there in my grand-daughter's gloved hand is the ripe fruit of the Giant Saguaro Cactus.
It's food to every desert-dwelling creature creative (or lucky) enough to get some.
White winged doves perch on the top of the cacti, gorging themselves on the seeds.  In the process, some get dislodged, and fall … (31 comments)

tucson: Tucson, Arizona: The Old Pueblo - 07/22/09 12:03 AM

Tucson, Arizona.  The Old Pueblo.  The volcanic basin that contains the city itself is 30 miles square.  That's a lot of territory.  There aren't too many cities in North America that take up 900 square miles.
I took this monsoon photo this evening at 6:30 p.m., on my way home from work at Sunstreet Mortgage.  Thousands of homes lie between the foreground of the photo above, and the mountains in the background.
Thousands of homes.  You'd never know it.  The rolling desert with its meandering arroyos seems to swallow them up, leaving the beauty of the landscape to capture your … (13 comments)

tucson: Desert Bighorn Sheep On Pusch Ridge, Oro Valley, AZ - 07/04/09 04:21 AM

The granite promontory (above) is the identifying feature of Pusch Ridge, an upthrust of rock that runs north from Tucson to Catalina, AZ, and overlooks Arizona's Catalina State Park. This photo was taken from the community of Honeybee Ridge in Oro Valley, AZ.
Pusch Ridge is home to the last surviving herd of wild Desert Bighorn Sheep in the greater Tucson area, and perhaps in all of southern Arizona.
The ram on the right lives at the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum (one of the ten best zoos in the world.)
If you're thinking of making Tucson or one of the surrounding … (34 comments)

tucson: Collecting Moonbeams in the Tucson Mountains - 03/10/09 11:59 PM

I was walking late this evening as the moon rose over Cat Mountain.  At first, it's bright white orb was all I could see.  Then, as the moon climbed higher in the sky, inky black cloud edges caught the silver moonbeams, making the invisible visible.  The beauty of the cloud structure was there all the time; I just couldn't see it.
There are lessons to be learned when we least expect to find them, if only we will stop quietly once in awhile to look up.  (Tuition is free.)

tucson: So You Thought You Knew Something About Tucson, Arizona? (1 of 10: Origins) - 01/25/09 10:30 PM
It's the county seat of Pima County in Southern Arizona.  Second largest city in Arizona.  Great golf.  An hour from Mexico.
That's what most people know about Tucson, AZ.  There's a whole lot more, and I'd like to introduce you to the city that captivated my Darlin' and me [no, it's not "I"] more than a decade ago.
The Spaniards established a fort (presidio) at Tucson in 1775.  Father Eusebio Kino had visited the Santa Cruz valley in 1692, with the purpose of establishing a mission.  He accomplished that task in 1700 with the founding of Mission San Xavier del Bac … (26 comments)

tucson: Arizona Holds The World Record for Diamondbacks, and It's Not Baseball! - 01/20/09 10:10 AM
I've posted about the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake previously.  The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum has a program to introduce people to these reptiles, native to Arizona.  We've even had what I thought was a large specimen (between four and five feet long) in our back yard for a summer.  (We knew where he was, and he wasn't a bother.)
Our son in law Fred is an avid outdoorsman and hunter, and he hunts regularly in the west.  Fred keeps an eye out for interesting articles, and sends them our way when he finds them.
Here's his most recent find!

tucson: Go Green: Do You Have A Favorite Nursery? - 11/20/08 10:49 PM
Mine's on Pima Street just west of Craycroft in Tucson.  It's called Terra Designs.  Chefs come here to buy herbs.
There's something about a plant nursery that attracts optimists.  I'm one of those.  An optimist.
I don't remember ever meeting anyone in a nursery, browsing among the plants, and thinking to myself "Wow.  What a negative person!"  Not once in sixty years.

Negativity just can't exist in a place like Terra Designs, where everything around you speaks of new life, color, texture, and possibilities.
The southwest is a place of bright, vibrant colors, and our nurseries reflect that.  I can't tell you … (20 comments)

tucson: Officer, Can You Give Me Directions... - 11/14/08 10:48 PM
Tucson REALTOR Ted Adamczyk and I drove from Tucson to Scottsdale last Saturday to attend a Treat 'Em Right Seminar with five hundred other "senders of cards" from as far away as Hawaii.  (I use Send Out Cards as my primary database and contact manager.)
Mapquest usually does a good job with directions, and I had printed them out.  Somehow we lost focus, and knew we were lost.
But wait!  There's help just up the road.  If anyone knows how to get back on track, it's a police officer.
That's my Element in the background.  As I approached the police cruiser, … (29 comments)

tucson: Distinctive Architecture: Tucson's Presidio - 11/07/08 08:28 PM

If you're thinking Paris, it's the Eiffel Tower.  Chicago?  The Sears Tower.  San Francisco?  The Opera House.  In the Old Pueblo, it's the distinctive tiled dome of the downtown Presidio.
When you think old west, you might not bring this distinctive dome to mind, but it overlooks El Presidio Plaza Park in Tucson, a site which was established in 1775 by a Spanish Army Captain, Hugo Conor.
I took this photo this afternoon while attending the Tucson Fire Fighter's Annual Chili Cookoff in the same plaza where Spanish soldiers once drilled and marched.
