Menorah at Broadway Mall
86th & Broadway
Upper West Side, Manhattan

The first night of Hanukkah begins tonight Saturday December 8.
During the eight nights and days of Hanukkah, we commemorate the ancient re-dedication of the menorah, lit once again in the Holy Temple of Jerusalem. The word Hanukkah (חֲנֻכָּה) translates as dedication or inauguration.
We mark this great miracle with the introduction of light – both physical and spiritual – into the darkest time of the year, watching as that light grows brighter and brighter each and every night.

upper west side: NYC | Hurricane Sandra on UWS Hurricane Sandy Downtown & Elsewhere - 10/30/12 11:30 AM
Lower Manhattan below 34th Street has been devastated by hurricane Sandy. The Hudson river overflowed at 23rd Street onto 10th and 11th Avenue. The west side highway, a river. The East Village is under terrible floods as is Battery Park City. Fires in Chelsea and throughout the city. Sandy caused terrible damage perhaps the worst hurricane damage in NYC history. Sandy wrecked havoc through out the region.
Fortunately on the Upper West Side of Manhattan her name was Sandra. She didn't quite let her hair down here like she did downtown. Sandra took down a few trees, left a few puddles … (12 comments)

upper west side: Nora Ephron's Love Affair with her UWS Apthorp Apartment - 06/27/12 06:35 PM
This week the great writer Nora Ephron died. The Apthorp on the Upper West Side is one my favorite pre-war buildings in Manhattan as evidenced by my many blogs about Apthorp Apartments.
I described it's iron gates, its monumental tunnel like entrances, and its impressive interior courtyard and called it an elegant apartment complex.

Apthorp Apartments converted to condominiums.
The landmark 1908 Upper West Side building has two addresses

Many Upper West Siders were saddened this past June when the famous H & H Bagels closed it's doors after almost 40 years on the Upper West Side. The store was closed down by the tax man. The owner was indicted on tax fraud charges.   DNAinfo reported a Bagel company from Queens had hoped to take over the space, but the landlord is asking approximately $450 per square foot, which wss too epensive. Apparently H&H owed over $300,000 in rent. A spokesperson for the Queens bagel company said opening in the former H&H space would signal that "the … (8 comments)

If you're looking for nice atmosphere, nice decorations, table cloths, candles and warm and fuzzy waiters then go next door to the Popover Cafe. But if you don't mind "ungapatchka" (a Yiddish word that describes the overly, busy and cluttered with junk)   If you're a real "foodie" and you can put up with the atmosphere, "tumult", and "shtick" from the staff than you will enjoy a real authentic Jewish breakfast at Barney Greengrass The Sturgeon King.
