superior: Wordless Wednesday - Dinner with a View of Paradise - 09/16/09 10:38 AM

Kevin took this photo in one of his favorite areas at the top of a mountain near Pardee Creek in Superior. It overlooks the Lolo National Forest towards the towns of Paradise and Plains, MT.
This area has abundant wildlife, and as you can tell, lots of timber and is a local favorite for recreation, hunting, and I guess picnicking!

Wordless Wednesday - Welcome to My Branch

Bald Eagles are a frequent sight along the Clark Fork River. They seem to come back to the same areas so we know where to look for them and enjoy seeing them on our drive. We loved that he was sharing his branch with a crow - that was the first time we've seen that!
Here's Another Bald Eagle Photo

I Love Your Local Photos - Would You Please Photograph the Cemetary?
Because we do a lot of blog posts about our local area and include a lot of photos and information, we get quite a few phone calls and email inquiries - both real estate and non-real estate related about the area. We welcome those requests and love to talk about Montana.
The most interesting inquiry we've received was an email inquiry from someone in Florida asking us to photograph the local cemetary:
"I loved the pictures that you posted on your web page. Superior looks beautiful. I just found out today … (7 comments)

Mineral County has 42 Pristine Mountain Lakes, including Missoula Lake which is located approximately 30 miles up Cedar Creek Road from Superior near the Montana / Idaho border.
87% of Mineral County is publicly-owned (U.S. Forest Service, State) so we have thousands of miles of amazing wilderness!

The water is so crisp and clean you can see almost the entire bottom of the lake, and all of the fish swimming in it!

Montana Bull Riding at the Bull-a-Rama Event - Mineral County Fair & Rodeo, Superior, MT
A long-time Montana tradition is Bull Riding and it continues at rodeos across the West. Mineral County Montana has an annual Fair and Rodeo the First Weekend in August every year.
This year the Fair Board had a Bull-a-Rama - a rodeo dedicated entirely to Bull Riding.

"It's bulls and blood, it's dust and mud, it's the roar of the Sunday crowd."

"It's the white in his knuckles, The gold in the buckle He'll win the next go 'round"

"It's boots and chaps, … (5 comments)

A Relaxing Morning Along Western Montana's Cedar Creek
We are both getting in shape this spring and decided to spend Saturday morning with a bike ride along Western Montana's Cedar Creek. Cedar Creek is located near the town of Superior Montana in Mineral County. It's only about 45 minutes from Missoula, Montana.
If you're looking for open space, Mineral County is a great place to live because 87% of the County is Publicly Owned - mostly by the U.S. Forest Service!
So Relax, and enjoy the soothing sounds of Cedar Creek!

With 16 ski areas in Montana, you could spend the entire winter tackling new downhill runs. My boss at my last company had this goal and actually made it to all 16 ski areas in one winter and had a great time. Here's a list of the ski areas and their websites in case you would like to try one or all.

Baby It's Cold Outside...Unless You're Soaking in a Hot Spring! While temperatures have been dipping into the 20's and 30's, a great way to warm up is by visiting a natural hot spring. Montana has more than two dozen developed "hot spring" destinations and another 30 natural sites all fed from natural geothermal features. Rooms, fine dining, therapeutic massage, Olympic sized pools, soaking tubs, and steam rooms are available at many of the developed sites. Resorts are located near some of the finest outdoor recreation areas in the state. Mountain ranges, streams and national forests adjoin Montana "Hot Springs." Some of … (1 comments)

superior: Mineral County's Mining History - 1897 Along Quartz & McFarland Creeks - 08/30/08 02:27 PM
Mineral County was home to one of the largest gold rushes in the state. It's hard to believe when you visit many of the drainages now that they were once home to thousands of people. An interesting news clip that I just came across from the Mineral County Historical Society is from the Mineral Independent (from the Missoulian 20 years earlier) August 31, 1933. It references Quartz Creek and its tributaries where we currently have properties listing - and mining claims!
I can just picture visiting an old miner's cabin and walking in and seeing their "pay" - a bowl full … (2 comments)

Earlier this summer we took a drive to Hoo Doo Pass near Superior, Montana. This is an amazing drive with breathtaking views from every side.
On the way you drive along a local favorite of fly fishermen - Trout Creek - which is rich in Trout, of course. The road leads you up a wide canyon. Along the way, you pass the trailhead for Heart Lake - a great day hiking trail.
Hoo Doo Pass is at the Montana / Idaho border and has a beautiful alpine feeling. There is also a trailhead for Hoo Doo Lake which I am told … (2 comments)

superior: Anthropologists to Perform a Dig in the China Gulch Area of Cedar Creek in Superior this Week! - 06/25/08 09:49 AM
Anthropologists from the University of Montana, in conjunction with the US Forest Service, will be visiting Superior this week and performing an archeological dig in the China Gulch area of Cedar Creek. They were also here in 1995 and discovered several things, including the U-shaped hearth in this photo.
Cedar Creek has a colorful history to say the least. In 1869, a Frenchman named Louis Barrette discovered gold and established Louiseville, named after his wife. By 1870, Louiseville was a booming mining town, but within 3 years it would be completely abandoned.
The Chinese who were forced out of Idaho moved into the … (0 comments)

superior: Beautifully "Green" in Western Montana - The Story of One Extraordinary Home - 03/08/08 07:55 PM
"Going Green" is definitely the trend right now. This extends to all aspects of our daily lives, from eliminating plastic shopping bags, to measuring and minimizing our carbon footprint, and also to home construction.
According to the National Association of Home Builders, the green segment of the construction industry is expected to climb from 2 percent of all housing starts in 2005 to between 5 and 10 percent in 2010. If these numbers are any indication, the practices advocated by green enthusiasts are well on their way to becoming mainstream.
So what makes a home green? According to ListedGreen.com, some good examples … (9 comments)

The snow is almost gone in beautiful Western Montana and hiking season is just around the corner! As a warm-up we decided to hike the Superior Vista Trail this evening. This trail was just formalized in the last year or two and leads up a mountain on the North side of the town of Superior. It is moderate to difficult in terrain with the first 1000 feet at 10% grade and the remaining hike at 15-20% grade.
The trail is marked with several signs with photos of Superior, the county seat for Mineral County, in the early 1900's and the historical sites that … (6 comments)
