maui: Jazz, Big Surf, and Island Rain on Maui - 09/15/14 06:27 AM

I am sitting at my home in Haiku, listening to some much needed rain falling that is making my plants very happy.  Maui is buzzing with big surf that has arrived on the island, waves coming all the way from Tahiti.

Saturday night was jazz night at the Spreckelsville Country Club with some good friends enjoying dinner, and music under the stars, it doesn’t get any better than this. These are the simple things in life that make island living so special.

Sunday I took a drive to Lahaina side anxious to taste some of … (4 comments)

maui: Hurricane Iselle and Julio set to hit the Hawaiian Islands - 08/07/14 01:45 PM
In Maui we are getting ready for a couple Hurricanes by the name of Iselle and Julio.  The State of Hawaii is under hurricane alert with Iselle looking to hit the Big Island tonight.

Iselle looks like its going to be more of a tropical storm with winds 50 mph and stronger, we will see.  People on Maui have been taking these storms seriously, filling up on gas, water, food and disaster supplies.  Costco has been packed with island locals and visitors getting ready for the unexpected.

Here is a shot I took from my lanai, the rain … (3 comments)

maui: Olukai Stand Up Paddleboard Race Maui - 05/22/14 02:27 PM
Olukai Race on Maui's Northshore

The Olukai standup paddle board race on Maui is an annunal event.  It is a 8 mile race from Maliko Bay to Kanaha Maui, located by the airport in Kahului. The last couple years I was out of town, but this year with my wife and friends we decided to rise up for the challenge.  Most of the three hundred contestants are hard core paddlers. My friends and my wife Ivy decided to do it just for the fun of it.

This is Maliko Bay, when your outside with 300 hundred other serious paddlers … (2 comments)

maui: Living in Haiku Maui - 04/25/14 08:54 PM

                      Surfing on Maui's Northshore

Living in Haiku Maui offers an island lifestyle with gentle tradewinds and soft rain falling in the evening. Haiku is a magical place that draws people that dream about living in old Hawaii.  Haiku has been my home for over 35 years, while a lot of the island has changed over the years, Haiku still feels like it's stuck in the past.  I love the drive from Paia Town as you pass Hooikpa Beach, you can see windsurfing at the point, or just maybe the surf is good and head home and grab … (2 comments)

maui: Experience Maui! - 04/22/14 07:15 PM

I just recently returned from New Zealand with my wife, it was our 30th anniversary.  Needless to say, three weeks in New Zealand was beautiful. I was talking to this one Kiwi, he was telling me how he has traveled all over the world.  He also mention that in all his travels Maui is the only place that he would ever consider to move to other than living in New Zealand.

Maui draws people from all over the world.  One of my favorite things to do is to take a trip aboard the Trilogy Excursions.  The Trilogy sails … (5 comments)

maui: Saturday on Maui, Sun's out beautiful day in pardise! - 03/29/14 03:35 PM

Saturday morning in Maui.  We just went through a period of rain and lots of windy days.  Today the sun was out, my son gave me a call that the surf was really good. So after my morning coffee I headed down to Hookipa Beach Park for a morning surf. I love paddling out in the line up, always met with smiles and high five from friends that I been surfing with for over 40 years.  It's always nice to meet people from Europe and other parts of the world. So after three hours I headed home for some blueberry pancakes … (7 comments)

maui: Great Adventure's in New Zealand - 03/18/14 01:24 PM

Hiking in New Zealand has so much to offer. There are caves, beaches, and mountains with sheep spotting the country side. In a three week time we have driven all over the North Island. Yesterday was a seven hour drive though some spectacular country side. This photo was taken in the north at a place called Piha Beach. I came here to surf but it was stormy so we took this beautiful trail to a water fall. The area is surrounded with Tea Tree which they make the oil from and its floating in the streams and water falls.  Today we are in … (5 comments)

maui: Gardening Tips - 03/14/14 09:16 PM

Some of you may know that I am a backyard gardener. I have always enjoyed nature and spending my days under the sun, and knowing that my joy for planting produces organic veggies/fruits makes me even more happy! Living in Hawaii comes with many perks for the gardener, such as rain water, great temperatures, weather is never really severe and we don't have to deal with bunnies and other veggie intruders. As my plants begin to flourish, I start thinking about different ways to enhance my "green area". So here are a few of the ideas that I have used … (4 comments)

maui: Photos of New Zealand - 03/13/14 02:30 AM

Photos of New Zealand.  My wife and I were hiking in the hill region of Gisborne New Zealand today.  After a morning surf and breakfast we decide to take a nature hike.  Our nature hike was located in a arboretum established over 100 years ago.  It was a sunny day and as we were walking through the trails as we ran into wild turkeys and sheep along the hill side. New Zealand offers natural beauty every direction you turn or drive. If you have a chance visit New Zealand you will be amazed. If you have questions about Maui real estate, give me a call.

maui: Exploring The Aina One Hoof at a Time - 03/04/14 07:29 PM

Many visitors are flying to Hawaii to escape the cold, soak in the sun rays and relax. Most of your time will be spent lounging on the beach of course but when you're feeling a tad to pink and need a break from the sun, hop in your car and take a drive through the countryside. Better yet, why not throw on a pair of boots and explore Maui's country by horseback? Piiholo Ranch (http://www.piiholo.com/horseback.html) is the perfect place to go to see the island from a different point of view. This ranch is known for their fabulous horsemanship and well … (4 comments)

maui: Maui Clouds (Wordless Wednesday) - 02/27/14 02:20 AM

When I first moved to Maui in the early 70's, one thing that really captured my attention was clouds. There was puffed clouds, train clouds, mushroom clouds, rain clouds and storm clouds. I still am amazed by their beauty.  This cloud over shadowing the Island of Lanai is a Wordless Wednesday cloud. Looking for Maui real estate visit nickensmaui.com.

maui: Kamaole Sands Condominium in Kihei Maui - 02/24/14 12:36 PM
Kamaole Sands has to be one of the most popular condos destination in Kihei Maui. One reason is its just across the street from one of Kihei’s most popular beaches Kamaole Beach III. Beautiful spot for a morning swim and evening sunsets.

Maui is experiencing a strong turn out with winter visitors.  Cold conditions in the mainland are always a factor for visiting snowbirds.  Maui will always be a strong destination and that is what drives our Maui real estate market.  Prices have adjusted since the market tanked a few years back. Buyers are taking advantage of the Maui real estate market, … (1 comments)

maui: Aloha Oi Mom - 02/23/14 08:51 AM

We had a sending off for my mother in law at Spreckelsville Maui on the northshore. She was 85 and was celebrated by four generation of family and friends. We laughed, told stories, played music and ate Hawaiian food. Family came in from outer islands and as far as Utah to celebrate her life. It was a beautiful day for Dee Yap, we paddled out and spread her ashes with flowers and much Aloha.
