jenny kotulak photo: All For The Sake Of Progress? - Taking Time To Question The Motives Of Others - 08/03/11 10:46 PM
A year ago we happened to be driving through Woodstock, Ontario on Easter Sunday, on our way to visit my sister in nearby Shakespeare, Ontario for Easter dinner.  We ended up taking a wrong turn in Woodstock and came across what was left of a beautiful turn of the century Church.
Only the front wall was still standing in what had been St. Mary's Catholic Church.  After doing a little research I found out the property had been sold and the front of the Church had been preserved and was to be incorporated into a senior's home to be built on … (11 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Name That Photo - If You Can - 05/31/11 11:15 PM
It's been awhile since I've posted to the Name That Photo group created a couple of years ago by Liz Moras.  It is a fun group to post to, one where you submit a photo with or without a clue and let AR members guess what the subject in the photo is.
Sometimes the subject in the  photo is relatively easy to determine but more often than not, there is some pretty wild guessing going on.
I was out an about yesterday and noticed this reflection on the water and it made me think of the Name That Photo group.  We all know … (21 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Where Do I Live? Well It Depends Who Is Asking - 05/26/11 11:13 PM
It's been 4 months now since  we pulled up roots in Oakville, Ontario and drove an hour and a bit in a south western direction to Tavistock, Ontario.
Oakville - Population 175,000 - Tavistock - Population - 2,400
Oakville is a fairly well known name.  It's an upscale community on the shores of Lake Ontario midway between the metropolitan cities of Toronto and Hamilton.
Tavistock, not so much.  Tavistock's claim to fame is playing host to the annual World Crokinole Championship.  This year the games are being held June 4th.  Tavistock only has one stoplight but it controls a wonky 5 way intersection.

jenny kotulak photo: There's Nothing Wrong With Being Bold - Is There? - 05/21/11 11:44 PM
When you think of the word jack o'lantern what colour comes to mind?  If you're thinking orange, you are correct.  We've been living in our new house now for almost 4 months and I'm beginning to crave a little more colour on our white walls. In the past, I'd say my colour scheme has always been quite conservative.  I've always leaned towards neutrals with a touch of blue for bathrooms.  In our new house we have a high wall in the stairwell leading to the second floor.  There are two windows in this area so it is quite bright.
I had … (21 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: I Will Buy My Dream Home When......... - 05/05/11 11:05 PM
I saw this cute little piggy bank when I visited the Best Little Pork Shoppe down the road in Shakespeare, Ontario.  I happened to have my camera with me and thought it was worth taking a picture of because it got me thinking.
I tried to think of ways to end the sentence.  I tried to think of ways my buyers would end the sentence.  And I'm curious as to how you would all finish the sentence.
I think most of us have an idea of what our dream home would be.  I always pictured an old stonehouse out in … (8 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Speechless Sunday - Shakespeare Sunset - 02/13/11 11:41 PM

I took this photo this evening through my sister's dining room window.  I was invited to share the birthday celebration for her twin sons who were turning 19.
My sister and her husband live on a dairy farm in Shakespeare, Ontario, Every evening they get to view the sun setting from their dining room.
Everytime I get to experience this sunset  view I'm in awe.  Two weeks ago I moved 7 minutes from her farm.  I'm quickly getting to love small town living.  As I grabbed my camera my brother inlaw asked me if we didn't have sunsets in Oakville where … (24 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Speechless Sunday - Triple Tree-o - 01/16/11 12:25 PM

Taken from inside my back door.  They may look cold but they don't look hungry.
From Wikipedia:
The Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) is a member of the dove family (Columbidae). The bird is also called the Western Turtle Dove or the American Mourning Dove or Rain Dove, and formerly was known as the Carolina Pigeon or Carolina Turtledove. It is one of the most abundant and widespread of all North American birds. It is also the leading gamebird, with up to 70 million birds shot annually in the U.S., both for sport and for meat. Its ability to sustain its … (14 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Wordless Wednesday - What's On Your Horizon? - 01/06/11 12:06 AM

It's a new year and most of us are still wondering where last year went.  I hear so many people say that they are glad that last year is over and that 2011 will be a new beginning.
Let's hope 2011 will be a great year for all of us and that we can accomplish all that we set out to do.  Add in  little luck for good measure and it will be the year to beat.

jenny kotulak photo: Wordless Wednesday - From A Bird's Eye View - 10/20/10 07:15 PM
Sometimes we just have to remove ourselves from a situation at hand and see it from a different perspective.
I was driving down a country road just on the outskirts of town the other day and saw this handsome red tail hawk perched high on a wire above a farmer's field.
He was looking for dinner and he had a great vantage point to spot any little critters in the field that looked tempting.  As I watched, he pounced straight down into a ditch and remained there for a minute or two.
I began to wonder if he was going to … (24 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Name That Photo - Monday Morning Mystery - 09/20/10 11:33 AM
It's been awhile since I have submitted a photo to the Name That Photo group.  When I snapped this photo this past weekend I thought it would make a great entry.
This photo is an extreme closeup of the subject in question.  I'm not going to give any clues up front as I want some pie in the sky guesses.
What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you look at this photo?  Who knows, your thought may be the correct answer.
Give it your best guess and I will come back later with a clue or two. … (25 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Foto Friday - Or Should I Say Foxy Friday ? - 09/03/10 07:03 PM
I often take my camera with me when I walk my dog because you just never know when a photo opportunity will present itself.
A walk through the neighbourhood last evening brought a totally unexpected sight.  As my daughter and I walked past a home in the subdivision she noticed a fox just sitting in a driveway.  He took a look at us but couldn't be bothered.  After sitting for a minute or two he made his way across the front lawn and peeked at us from behind the bushes.
I don't recall ever seeing a fox in Oakville but with … (14 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Thoughtful Thursday - You Can Take The Girl Out Of The Country - But Not Forever - 09/02/10 10:56 AM
You've heard the old saying "You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl."  I did some searching on Google to see where that saying originated but couldn't find much, only a few country music songs.
If you live in a city and need some relief from the noise, traffic, pollution, etc., head for the country.  Hop in the car and point it towards Rural Route anywhere.  The quiet country roads provide amazing scenery.  Horses and cows grazing, beautiful farm properties, old stone houses, colourful barns, many in disrepair but full of … (17 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Moose Monday - I Found The Real Deal In Algonquin Park - 08/09/10 11:58 PM
I'm always pleased when I have some moose artifact photo to post to the Moose Monday group here on Active Rain.  I have mentioned a few times before that living in the Greater Toronto Area does not afford the opportunity of spotting real live moose strolling down the streets or through backyards like my blogging buddies in Montana and Alaska.
Last week I had the opportunity to take a few days vacation and ended up driving through the enormously scenic Algonquin Provincial Park in Northern Ontario.  A stop at the visitor's information centre and museum allowed me to get some nice photos … (26 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Speechless Sunday - A Carload Of Curb Appeal - 08/01/10 11:35 PM
Curb appeal can be created many different ways.  It is so easy to create instant results to the exterior of a home by adding some seasonal flowers to some urns, window boxes or containers.
I saw this "planter" this weekend while driving through a small town in Ontario.  I can't say that I get it but it certainly is a conversation piece.

jenny kotulak photo: Moose Monday - Moose Sightings In Mississauga, Ontario - 07/19/10 11:00 PM
Once in awhile I have something to contribute to my blogging buddy  Gerry Khatchikian's  Moose Monday group.  Gerry is always sending me out in search of moose on the loose.
Not an easy task in this part of the country.  Still, I seem to spot the elusive moose in the oddest of places.  I like to spend time at Riverwood Park in Mississauga, Ontario.  It is a great spot to walk the dog and bird watch along the Credit River and enjoy the beautiful flowers on the manicured property.
As I was walking by one of the old buildings on the … (17 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Wordless Wednesday - Bareback Deer Riding - 06/10/10 12:35 AM
I had to share these photos with you as I'm surprised they even turned out.  It was a very dull evening and timing was everything.  I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
I was chuckling to myself and my dog was pulling her leash so hard becaue she wanted so badly to get to where the action was.  I was trying to zoom in and keep a steady hand.
So technically and colourwise these photos aren't perfect but I hope the subject matter will put a smile on your face as it did mine.

jenny kotulak photo: Is A Snowman Still A Snowman When It's Not Made Of Snow ? - 01/20/10 12:29 PM

I came upon this fellow in front of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre this week.  I was on my way inside to the 2010 RE/MAX Kickstart Sales Rally.  I couldn't resist stopping for a photo op because as you see by the background, I'm not going to find any snowmen around that are actually made of SNOW.
Our winter so far this year has been too kind and gentle to us here in the Greater Toronto Area.  I'm fine with that but I"m sure there are many children out there who are itching to build a snowman out of that real, white … (16 comments)

jenny kotulak photo: Friday's Foto - Making Waves On Lake Ontario - 09/25/09 11:10 PM

It was a chilly  56 degrees F. with a strong wind just before sunset this evening when I spotted this brave? soul taking to Lake Ontario with his surf board at Bronte Beach in Oakville.  Yes, Lake Ontario, where the current temperature was hovering around 67 degrees F.
Living on Lake Ontario for all these years, I must say I never really thought too much about all the related statistical information.  I did a bit of research and here are a few interesting facts and figures.
Lake Ontario is the 14th largest lake in the World It ranks 4th among the … (20 comments)
