For many who are deliberating on a permanent move and Hawaii real estate purchase, employment is an important concern. You may know that the Honolulu economy is big, but what if you don't prefer an urban environment? What if you've taken a vacation to Maui and you prefer it over the other islands? In this case, looking at unemployment information may be helpful.

maui: Maui Recycling and Employment Boost - 11/01/13 01:05 PM
Here on Maui, there are often reports about falling unemployment these days, and there are a lot of major strides being made in green living. However, it's not often that we hear about substantial gains in both categories via one project. That's exactly what we're seeing from Anaergia Services.

As Maui real estate experts, we like to keep our eye on the Hawaii economy as a whole, especially when the reports focus on statistics that can influence the Maui housing market. Amid the nervousness and tension surrounding last week's government shutdown, we were glad to read about the report from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Honolulu that provided statistics on a 4.4 percent drop in the number of bankruptcy cases filed in Hawaii, compared to the same month last year.

maui: Kihei Piilani Promenade Project - 10/04/13 01:10 PM
The Piilani Promenade project has been revised, and if it gets built, it will be a rather large commercial and residential real estate addition to South Maui. The plan originally included a 700,000-square-foot retail center called the Maui Outlets and Piilani Promenade, but the Hawaii Land Use Commission rejected the outlet and retail center plan because the developer didn't meet zoning conditions. Now the plan has changed.

The latest report from the Realtors Association of Maui has revealed that all categories in the Maui real estate market grew in August. For those of you who are in the market for a beautiful South Maui property but are concerned about energy costs, you'll be pleased to hear a recent bit of news from Maui Electric Co. (MECO). Thanks to improvements of their generator control systems and the full incorporation of the battery energy storage system at the Kaheawa Wind II farm, MECO is now using 91 percent of available wind energy compared to the 72 percent it was able to use before. This means better savings for customers.

maui: New Qualified Residential Mortgage Standards - 09/06/13 03:25 PM
Federal regulators recently dropped a proposal that would have encouraged mortgage lenders to require a 20 percent down payment from home buyers.
This was a significant decision for the real estate market, as it would have made it more difficult for first-time home buyers and those without a lot of savings to get a mortgage. On the other hand, it would have also helped provide a more stable framework for preventing foreclosures, but based on our Maui real estate market and economy, those issues are on a steep decline anyhow.

maui: Maui Performs Well Against Global Destinations - 03/09/13 06:16 PM

Maui has been ranked No. 3 among the world's island and sun destinations for hotel occupancy, according to Hospitality Advisors LLC and Smith Travel Research. Oahu was No. 1, while Kauai and the Big Island were also among the top ten. As a whole, the state came in after Singapore and South Korea for occupancy, but was only second after Singapore for the average daily room rate and revenue per available room. Hawaii's isolation makes its performance all the more impressive, considering that Singapore and South Korea have an enormous pool of vacationers whose visits require relatively little travel, … (0 comments)

There were 159 bankruptcy filings in January this year, as opposed to 212 filings during the same month last year. Year over year, Chapter 7 filings fell by 31.5 percent, while Chapter 13 filings fell by 4.3 percent. The unemployment data came from the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, … (0 comments)
