brighton michigan: Brighton Michigan – Great Idea! - 03/21/14 09:18 AM
If you live in Michigan you’re encountering the dreaded potholes.  A particularly rough winter has made our roads even worse and real road repairs won’t start for a little while yet.  So it’s good to see a city government being proactive. Here’s a great idea.
You can report potholes on the website for the City of Brighton, or by message to their facebook page.  This is good for both streets and municipal parking lots.  Just don’t report them while driving!
And if you're hitting potholes while driving around looking at homes on your own, feel free to give me a … (0 comments)

brighton michigan: Who Says You Can't Get Blood Out Of A Seller? - 01/23/13 09:01 AM
Can't get blood out of a seller? Or a buyer?  Or how about a real estate professional, a lender or even a turnip?  Well, yes you can.  OK, maybe not the turnip.  But you can get blood out of the rest of the above - and from yourself.
As part of its ongoing community service activities, Preview Properties in Brighton, Michigan is hosting a blood drive for the American Red Cross on Tuesday, January 29th from 11 am to 4:45 pm.  Donating is easy and you get the chance to potentially affect the lives of 3 people in a positive … (4 comments)

brighton michigan: Buying Your First House - 11/03/12 10:01 AM
What can be greater than actually buying your first house?  OK, that’s open to interpretation of course.  But in terms of life moves, it has to be up there as one of the best and happiest times.  It can also be stressful, if for no other reason, the lack of certainty. It definitely takes us out of our comfort zone.
How much can I afford?  What’s the best neighborhood? Ranch, colonial, split-level?  Subdivision lot, small or large acreage?  How much will it cost me to maintain? What about unplanned repairs? Is the school system good?  It can sound pretty daunting.
And … (0 comments)

brighton michigan: Unhealthy (But Rewarding) Choices - 04/26/12 03:43 AM
Credit and Debit card reward points are a fixture today.  You can get cards that give you bonus points for air fare, travel, or general use – to be redeemed out of a catalog.  Years ago, I remember my local bank giving 4 points per dollar for the first six months your account was active.  It later downgraded to 2 points per dollar, then one point.  Now, it’s one point per two dollars spent. Guess we were having ‘too rewarding’ an experience, America.
Scanning my online bank account, I noticed a promo (yes, embedded into my online account statement!) for 40 … (0 comments)

brighton michigan: Recent Genoa Township Sales - 03/12/12 08:50 AM
Here’s a list of the sales in Genoa Township for the first week of March 2012 (March 1-March8).
$485,000 – 5861 Hartford Way, Pine Creek Ridge
This was a new build that sold quickly.  It’s listed as 1 day on the market and was listed at $399,900.  My guess it went under contract earlier in the construction process and the buyers wanted some upgrades that increased its value.  It’s great to see more new construction popping up in the area again. Brighton schools.
$236,000 – 5440 Sharp, East Crooked Lakefront
This was my listing and it sold in 15 days for … (0 comments)

brighton michigan: Howell Michigan Holiday Spirit - 12/06/11 07:55 AM
OK, I admit it.  I’m a big proponent of shopping local.  I don’t care if you’re from Waterford or Birmingham, Ann Arbor or Brighton – patronize your local shops.
A couple of weeks ago, some business owners in Brighton got together and made a video about just that topic.
Now we have a great promo video of being in downtown Howell during the Holidays. A lot of video was shot during the Fantasy of Lights Parade (which everybody should see at least once!) and really gives you the feeling of shopping in a downtown area.
Big box stores and malls … (2 comments)

brighton michigan: Support The Troops - Thursday, December 1st, 2011 - 11/28/11 08:16 PM
Hey, Livingston County! One of the Brighton Optimists, Donna Campbell, is helping a friend collect items to send over to the troops in Afghanistan.  She'll be collecting items Thursday morning at the Bauery Restaurant at Mt. Brighton, during the weekly Brighton Optimist Club Meeting.  An excerpted list of items that are wanted are:
lotion, sunscreen, deodorant - all travel size; chap stick, soap, eye drops, disposable razors; individual packets of trail mix, beef jerky, and general munchies; disposable cameras, small toys like beanie babies that the troops can hand out to the kids over there; zip lock bags and holiday … (5 comments)

brighton michigan: Holiday Fundraiser Gives Both Ways - 11/28/11 07:32 AM
I’ve been an active member of the Brighton Optimist Club for many years.  They are a community service group under the Optimist International umbrella and their motto is, “Bringing Out The Best In Kids.”  Over their 35 years of existence, they’ve done a lot of great things for the community and its youth.
But these projects take money, so fundraising is needed.  Their annual Holiday fundraiser is called Green2Green, in partnership with Dutchman Tree Farms in Michigan.  Dutchman sells container grown evergreens, balled and burlap trees, holiday wreaths, and both 7’ cut and 3’ tabletop Christmas trees.
We’ve been getting … (0 comments)

brighton michigan: Centerpiece of Brighton’s 9-11 Memorial Arrives - 09/10/11 02:08 PM

The public was encouraged to line Grand River from Genoa Twp to the Brighton Area Fire Department with American flags to help commemorate the arrival of a girder from the World Trade Center, the centerpiece to Brighton’s 9/11 Memorial.  I entered Grand River near Hacker Rd., and saw the first flag just west of Hilton Rd, where a family was out with a flag-laden golf cart and the entire group holding flags, too.
Small groups gathered on both sides of Grand River near the Fire Station, with a larger crowd at the site.  People came alone and carrying large … (0 comments)

brighton michigan: Brighton’s 9/11 Memorial Progresses - 09/02/11 02:31 PM
Work continues on the 9/11 sculpture site on W. Grand River, in front of the Brighton Area Fire Department.  A crew from Integrity Concrete was present when I stopped by this morning.  All workers were in constant motion in preparation for the official unveiling in a little over a week from today, on 9/11/11.
The centerpiece will be a twisted segment of steel beam from the World Trade Center, suspended from the four angled black beams in the picture and will hover above pieces of broken concrete. There is also to be a wall around the memorial with the names of … (0 comments)

brighton michigan: Short Note on Brighton Businesses - 08/21/11 08:19 PM
Things are certainly popping in Brighton lately.
The tentatively named Western House Brewery approved by Brighton Planning Commission for the old Western House Hotel location, AKA the ‘Pink Hotel’, at West Main and First streets.  This should be a great addition to downtown. Final vote by City Council will be September 1st.
The Pound Sports Bar continues through construction on the site of the old Singer Press building at West and Main streets, across from the Main Street Martini Bar.
Elite Feet opens up downtown.  With the Runnin’ Gear store on Grand River just west of Old US-23, we now have … (0 comments)

brighton michigan: Brighton Michigan – 35 Homes For $100,000 or Less - 06/25/11 02:37 PM
Right now, there are twenty three detached single family homes and twelve condos for sale in this price range.  This search is for the Brighton School District, so while some properties fall within city limits, many are in the surrounding townships.  Ten of the thirty five units are bank-owned (foreclosures) and another eleven are short sales (selling for less than what is owed and the bank will need to approve the sale).
Five of the units are in a senior (55+ years old) co-op.  The co-op units are small (950-1005 sq ft) two bedroom, one and a half bath each and … (2 comments)

brighton michigan: Chipmunk Feast - 06/20/11 07:01 AM

I love this time of year. I have a serviceberry tree in my courtyard and when the berries ripen, an amazing array of large and small birds appear.  I just replaced a large bird feeder that hangs from the tree with one designed for smaller birds.  For the last few days I've noticed a chipmunk eating the seed that the birds spill onto the ground.  As I sat on the porch (with a camera, should an interesting bird happen by), I noticed a chipmunk scurry up the tree trunk and find a comfortable perch.  As you can see, he's helping himself to … (8 comments)

brighton michigan: Free Fishing Derby For Kids - June 11th, Brighton, MI - 05/26/11 05:08 PM
The Brighton Optimist Club has been around for 34 years.  For the last 25 years, they've conducted a free fishing derby for the area youth, aged 16 and under.  It started with some Optimists, some kids and some worms. From its humble beginning with about 30 participants, it's grown to a 300-400 kid event.
The entire event is free and includes souvenir photo mock fishing licenses, bait, age group trophies, door prizes, entertainment and food. The really little ones get to try their luck at the L'il Angler booth where a clip on the end of a fishing line is dropped … (0 comments)

brighton michigan: Two Livingston County Cities Get 'Tree City USA' Designation - 04/21/11 10:29 AM
The Arbor Day Foundation recently released its list of 2010 Tree City Awards.  Howell, Michigan was named a Tree City for the 23rd straight year, and Brighton, Michigan received that honor for the ninth year in a row.  Congratulations Howell and Brighton!
Four standards must be attained to achieve this recognition, which is open to communities of any size.  There must be a Tree Board or Department, a tree care ordinance, an Arbor Day observance and proclamation, and a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita.
The Tree City USA (r) program is sponsored by the … (0 comments)

brighton michigan: You’d Better Believe It’s A Tough Market – We Want Your Blood! - 01/27/09 08:29 AM
It's that time again!  Preview Properties conducts at least one community service function every month.  Past beneficiaries have been Gleaner's Food Bank, LACASA, The Connection House, The Salvation Army, Family Impact Center, Livingston Educational Service Association, Cell Phones For Soldiers, and of course, the Livingston County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Please consider a blood donation. This Red Cross chapter provides 97% of all of the County's blood needs, as well as their emergency services for local disasters and emergency messages for families with overseas servicemen and servicewomen.  It's an easy way to give back to your community.

brighton michigan: It Must be Winter! - 12/07/08 09:03 PM
Our first 'big' snow on December 1st was a heavy, sticky type (great for making snowmen and snow balls!), and between appointments I stopped at a local park.

I love the way snow hangs on the conifers.  This shot is at the golf course at Huron Meadows Metropark, off Rickett and Hammel Roads. I drove through the south end of the park, too. The park roads were plowed and clear but really slick.  I was surprised to see a couple of cars parked at the picnic area with nobody around. Apparently, they were out enjoying the snow on xc skis.

brighton michigan: Great Home, Great Area - 5409 Morningview Terrace, Brighton, MI 48114 - 09/20/07 08:41 PM
Here's a 1994-built, almost 3000 sq ft colonial in Brighton Township, Brighton Schools.  It features 4 bedrooms, 2 full and 1 half baths, a custom kitchen with all granite counters, a formal dining room and so much more.  Finished space in the basement, a 3-season room that overlooks the deck and heated inground pool, plenty of room for the entire family.
Spacious master suite, 3 car garage and many more features. The concrete drive was replaced just this year, the kitchen is only a few years old and the pool was installed in 2001.  Thinking about moving up and taking advantage of … (0 comments)
