charity: Charity Golf Tournament - Your Support Is Appreciated - 10/17/12 08:26 PM
I am chairing the 6th Annual Angie Houtz Memorial Fund Golf Tournament.
The Angie Houtz Memorial Fund was established after my best friend Angie was killed in the September 11 attack on the Pentagon.  The charity is run by my husband and I, Angie's 2 sisters and their husbands.
Since it's inception the fund has given out $1000s in scholarships to talented students attending public colleges in Maryland.  We recently awarded the 2012 scholarships to 5 talented college students.
After notifying 2012's winner of a $3000 scholarship we received the following response:
"Last night, after I received the phone call that … (0 comments)

The MS Walk 2011 will be held tomorrow, April 10, 2011 at the Bowie Town Center.  We have a great group of people ready to walk the 5 mile course in the morning but there is always room for more.  The weather is supposed to be beautiful and the walk is even more fun with great company!
The donations have been very slow this year and we are far away from our goal and would appreciate any and all donations possible.
Please consider making a donation or joining our team.

This is an important charity to me as I have … (7 comments)

charity: Charitable Donations for 2010 - Paying it Forward with Every Closing - 01/08/11 10:54 AM
Last year I implemented a program where $150 was donated to charity with every closing.  The first $50 is donated to a charity of my choosing and the remaining $100 is donated to a charity (or charities) of my client's choosing.
Despite a relatively slow year I was still able to make hundreds of dollars of donations to several wonderful charities including:
American Heart Association Angie Houtz Memorial Fund Clinton/Bush Haiti Fund Doctors Without Borders Eastern Virginia Medical School Elton John AIDS Foundation Food for the Poor Interfaith Community Against Domestic Violence Keep a Child Alive Mental Health Association of Montgomery … (8 comments)

charity: Schedule a Donation Pick-up at Your Convenience - 08/23/10 06:31 PM
If you are like me you have things that you are no longer using that someone else could benefit from.  Usually, I pile them up in the garage until a charity calls and then I happily leave them outside my home for pick-up.  I've had several things for months now and no one has called (of course, i'm too lazy to take them myself).

Today I stumbled on a service called Good Donor which allows you to schedule a pick-up online at your convenience.  You can either schedule a pick-up by date or by charity.

I have scheudled a pick-up … (4 comments)

charity: Jump Rope for Heart - 04/13/10 05:03 PM
My 7 year old daughter has decided that she wants to participate in her school's Jump Rope for Heart.  This year she not only wants to participate in the actual day but she also wants to raise money for the American Heart Association.
Even though I am in no mood to fundraise, I am also a big believer in charity and since she is interested then I believe it is my job to support her philanthropic efforts.
She has been on the phone the last fews days with aunts, uncles, and grandmas, etc securing pledges.  She is incredibly competitive and wants … (1 comments)

charity: Aid Desperately Needed for Haiti - 01/13/10 02:04 PM
Everywhere you turn today there are horrifying images of the devastation in Haiti following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake yesterday.  This has hit home for me because I learned of this earthquake when my mom called from Kingston, Jamaica yesterday evening indicating that they had just had an earthquake.  Kingston is located 296 miles away from where the earthquake occurred.  That should give a picture of the magnitide of this quake that it was felt strongly so far away.
It's hard for me to watch images of an island so close to my childhood home in such devastation.  It is feared that … (6 comments)

charity: Friends of Jaclyn - An Amazing Charity - 08/01/09 09:34 AM
This morning I was watching Real Sports and we saw a story about a young girl dealing with a malignant brain tumor.  She was a lacrosse player prior to her becoming ill.  She was "adopted" by the Northwestern University women's lacrosse team.  These team members treated her like a VIP.  They invited her to games, sent her text messages, emails, and videos.  Both the little girl and her father felt that this special treatment by the team helped her heal.
Jaclyn and her father started a charity called Friends of Jaclyn.  This charity matches children suffering with brain tumors to college … (2 comments)

charity: Giving Back - 06/11/08 06:34 PM
When I was first interviewing brokers I met a wonderful agent with a small company who mentioned that she gave a portion of every commission to charity.  Even though I eventually affiliated with a different company I really liked her idea.  I decided I would start doing it with my first transaction.  I decided that I would give $150 to charity with every closing (more for higher priced listings).  As I get more and more business my plan is to increase the amount.  I give my buyers (or sellers) a sheet explaining the charity donations, $50 automatically goes to my favorite charity … (4 comments)
