old northeast: Old Northeast neighborhood in St Petersburg named one of Best Older Home Neighborhoods - 02/22/12 10:38 AM
The Old Northeast neighborhood, adjacent to downtown St Petrsburg, has always been a popular neighborhood. Now This Old House has recognized it as a Best Old Home Neighborhood 2012: South. It's the only neighborhood in Florida to be recognized by them this year and it rates in various categories: family friendly, parks and recreation, cottages and bungalows, gardening, Editors' Choice.
The varied styles of homes - bungalows, Colonials, Mediterranean, Italian, and even a few moderns - work together because of all the trees and landscaping. Many of the streets are brick and many of the sidewalks are made with hexagonal concrete … (2 comments)

old northeast: 50 ft wide lots - 08/14/06 07:45 PM
In most coastal areas of Florida, lots are small - a typical waterfront lot may be 80 ft x 120 ft.  In the newer suburbs in surrounding areas, the lowest priced homes ($250,000-$300,000) may be on 50 ft wide lots. They enjoyed this, as it provided privacy from the street, and was a … (0 comments)

Despite national statistics that the size of a home is increasing each year, and the McMansions that are sprouting up all over, there are proponents of having a smaller but better designed house. Sometimes the bigger house is for our things, rather than for us. Sarah Susanka has written several books on this. Her original book "The Not So Big House: A Blueprint for the Way We Really Live" is my favorite. Susanka discusses how to design a home by how we use it, aligning spaces so you visually see beyond the room, providing for alcoves for certain activities rather than … (1 comments)
