home staging: The Placebo Effect Of Home Staging - 03/18/13 05:44 AM

For almost 5 years I was a participant in a longitudinal study of a medication to reduce the incident of cancer.  Before participating, I asked the study nurse what would be the possible side effects of taking the medication.  There was a list but no side effect was a threat to life.  So, I agreed.  During the study, I could have sworn I had those effects.  I would report in annually and list off the things I attributed to the medicine.  At the same time, I was pretty sure that I would be cancer free during the period because I … (67 comments)

home staging: The Influence of a Few Good Home Stagers - 04/21/12 02:01 PM
One of my favourite pastimes is to look at all of the work of the ActiveRain stagers.  Just when I think that I have my home the way I like it, along comes a theme or a noticeable trend and I start getting the itch to make changes.  For example,  I have noticed that poppy pictures are, dare I say it, popping up in the after photos of a lot of the Home Stagers.  Just a few sample:
Julia Fedak,  Valerie Sagheddu,  Maureen Bray,  Peg Barcelo-Jackson , Kristine Ginsberg,   Cathy Tarrant, and  Kathy Nielsen
I have been on the hunt for my own poppy … (20 comments)

home staging: Applied Elbow Grease - Before Your House is on the Market - 04/03/12 03:57 AM
There is so much to do to get a home ready to sell.  You, the Seller, have been told to turn your home into a salable product.  Of course there are lists and ideas on what to do that your agent will give you or you will find here in AR.  Today, I want to focus on the appliances in your kitchen.  In some areas, such as Ottawa, the norm is that the appliances will be included.  Even if they are not, Buyers are snoops.  They look everywhere INCLUDING inside your appliances.  Walk into your kitchen, as though you are a … (25 comments)

home staging: Stair Runner Gone Wrong - 03/29/12 07:23 AM

Okay, what were these Sellers thinking?  Sure, they had a long hallway runner just sitting there in the basement begging for a use in their new home.  Sure the babies were finding it difficult to navigate the wood stairway but.....  taking the runner, flowing it through some metal rods and then (the cherry on the sundae) wrapping it around the last step and nailing it in place?  ARG
Now I am sure that this runner was of very good quality and seemed wasted when not in use but......  the stairs turned at the bottom and a straight runner, unless … (21 comments)

home staging: I don't know picture hanging from Adam. - 03/28/12 06:27 AM

Okay, just a little joke on Michelangelo's painting 'The Creation of Adam' in the Sistine Chapel.  I was doing an Open House a few years ago and could not help but notice that the owner had hung the artwork too high.  Now, admittedly Adam was a print taken from the original that is painted on the ceiling of the chapel BUT the owner's attempt to get this painting as close to the ceiling as possible was just a bit bizarre.
The recommended gap between the sofa and the art is 6 - 8 inches.  The owners went a … (32 comments)

home staging: Can People See Into Your Home? Window Wallpaper - 03/23/12 05:35 AM
When you are selling your home, you want to let the light in and show off your bright and open home.  However, if you are living in the home and on a day to day basis people can see right into your home. you may lack privacy.  People who live in townhomes, condos, or in high density urban areas are most likely to have homes that are open to neighbours and street traffic.  Try walking around the neighbourhood at night and see how easy it is to see into some people's homes.  You could stand on the street and watch the … (26 comments)

home staging: Don't Eat the Yellow Snow - 11/17/11 09:57 AM

Okay, now that I have your attention, this is a word of caution for home sellers.  Winter is coming.  I know we have had some spectacular weather but the inevitable will happen in the northern states and Canada - SNOW!!!!
Selling your house during winter has its challenges.. First, make sure that your walk and driveway are shoveled.  People need access to your home.  The driveway is important because street parking is often limited during the winter months.  Now, if you have dogs or you live in a dog populated neighbourhood, you are familiar with yellow snow.  If possible, shovel … (26 comments)

home staging: Itsy bitsy spider - 05/19/11 08:20 AM
Almost every house in Ottawa has resident spiders.  It seems our winter weather draws them indoors.  Now, I have been in homes in almost every province and in a number of states and guess what - spider webs.  Maybe like cockroaches, these bugs will last centuries.
Your job, before putting your house on the market and then before people come to view your house, it to take a broom and wipe down all the cob webs.  Favourite spider places are corners and in and around light fixtures.  Sure, they are invisible, until you turn on the lights and then - YIKES!!!
Make sure … (62 comments)

home staging: Knobs and Pulls. If I had a nickel for every.... - 03/19/11 09:49 AM

Are you going to change the drawer pulls and handles in your kitchen?  Consider brushed nickel.  This metal is very current, does not show all the finger prints of your spouse and children and gives an instant update to your kitchen and bath.
Adding cupboard door knobs and drawer pulls will increase the perceived value of your home.  I recently stayed in a Del Webb community in Arizona.  What a great place to retire!  However, selling the homes is competitive.  There are only so many models of homes.  Most kitchens look the same.  Certainly the appliances that come with the … (31 comments)

home staging: Decorating with your Hobby Products - 03/13/11 09:21 PM

There are many hobby enthusiasts out there, myself included.  If we are creating things, we will likely end up with many items that we want to keep and display.  One or two of something is normally an interesting way of highlighting talents.  Unfortunately a lot of us fall into a trap of using our homes to showcase our work with more than a coupleof quilts or pieces of woodwork, or watercolors, etc.  If our homes are just for us then I say decorate any way you want and enjoy expressing who you are and what you love in your surroundings.
Fast forward to wanting to … (22 comments)

home staging: Judy Klean Comes Clean on Home Staging for House Seller Lou - 03/09/11 06:44 AM
This is the story of House Sellers Mark and Lou.
As we learned earlier, Home Seller Mark has moved out and we are now dealing with Home Seller Lou.  With the good news about the Grow Op, Lou is ready to bring in a Home Stager.  Agent Valerie had given her three referrals:  Sally Worthy, Janice Anytime and Judy Klean.  All three were well known experts in getting houses ready for market.  Lou called Judy because her name sounded just right.   Agent Valerie intended to be at the initial appointment with Lou and Judy but one of her deals went into … (64 comments)
