~Camp Medicine~

Via the grapevine is the usual way I learn about the comings and goings of my extended family.  But yesterday I read in my hometown's online newspaper that this summer a niece of mine, a high school sophomore, will be attending an interesting sounding camp that I have never heard of.  The name of the camp is Camp Medicine. I thought I would pass the information along in case anyone else is interested.

Camp Medicine is a 10 day pre-medical or pre-veterinary program for high school students at St. George's University in Grenada, West Indies.  It is for students who are interested in becoming doctors or veterinarians.  I understand the cost is $1600 and includes housing, meals, medical instruction, activities and transportation while there.  Some extracurricular activities include visiting a rainforest, scuba diving, whale watching, and hiking.

The weather in Grenada reaches about 85 during the daytime.  If you are going, take a good sunscreen since you'll be a mere 12 degrees north of the equator!

Hi Shirley... what an great sounding program and opportunity to cultivate the minds of our youth.  Allowing young adults to get a taste of what they think that they might want to make their career will certainly help them determine if their career passions are really where they thought they were.

Hi Steve, I agree.  I don't remember anything like this when I was in high school!

Shirley, I think programs like these are wonderful.  Our daughter thought she wanted to be an astronaut years ago so we sent her to space camp.  After coming home she never discussed it again.  Years later I asked her what happened and she told me she figured out that she couldn't do the math.  She ended up getting a degree in Communication design.  This will help your niece decide if it is for her or not.

Hi Marchel, One of my daughters thought about medical school.  She spent a summer with an aunt and uncle, a doctor is private practice, and got cooled off on the idea.  I think it was being present at a birth that freaked her out.

Howdy there Shirley, my friend

That there sure is a real fine sounding camp for young adults to go too. A fun way to help them get ready to become a Doctor or a Veterinarian. You'll have to be sure and let us all know, how your Niece liked the camp.

God Bless America

OH SHirley, my oldest grandson is thinking Doctor, and the middle one is thinking Marine Biologist, so I will have to keep this information around abit.  Older grandson is 13 now so not too long for him. I wonder if grandmama could come as a chaperone? ;)

Hi Gail, I was wondering about chaperones, as well.  Surely they have chaperones.  I think that would be a great experience/vacation for you and your grandson.

Hi Shirley, Now this sounds like a wonderful experience for your niece and I'm sure something she will never forget. There seem to be a lot more opportunities these days, than from what I remember!!

Hi Mary, There are tons more opportunities for young people these days than when I was in high school.  But we still had lots of fun.
