Gardening with Native Texas Plants~Texas Betony

TEXAS BETONY (Stachys coccinea) is a wonderful plant for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to your yard.  Although it grows wild in moist conditions in the mountain crevices of the Trans-Pecos, it also grows well in dry, or even drought, conditions once it is established.  Texas Betony makes a great border plant.  Reddish orange tubular shaped flowers bloom profusely in Spring but once the hot days of Summer are underway, it goes away until Fall when it blooms once again.

Texas Betony is known as a favorite nectar plant for hummingbirds and Pipevine Swallowtail butterflies. It also has pungently scented leaves that deer will not eat.  That one characteristic makes it a perfect plant for the San Antonio area, especially if you live in Garden Ridge, Hollywood Park, or other areas that deer frequent.

Hi Ricki, This plant is so pretty and deer resistant, too. What more could be ask in our area?

Hi Dale,  We've never had deer eat out plants but I would be very unhappy if they did.  Maybe Carl & Ceil will have better luck with plants like this.

We just got some and hope the deer will pass them by. The deer are sure staying close to the house these last few days, I figure we will see some fawns before long. They usually act this way every year and they park their fawns close to the house, I guess they figure they will be safe.
