The economy shouldn’t hurt kids, but it does

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty

I love kids and would do anything for them and today was no exception. Over the past two years many of you have read about me coaching not one, but two teams. One softball and one baseball, to make sure these kids got to play.

This year, I have one more that is ready to play, but the league doesn’t have enough coaches, and unless they can get two more coaches, they have announced they are going to have to cancel T-Ball for the 5 year olds.

Now, this isn’t even the end of the story. It costs approximately $50 dollars to join our little league, and though it doesn’t seem like a lot, this year in the 7 & 8 year old group, we have 26 kids! Not even enough to make up 3 full teams!

I think this has a lot to do with the economy. Parents have to work two jobs to make ends meet and don’t have time to volunteer. Some don’t have enough money to swing for their kids going out for sports.

I personally think sports are just as important as school, if not more. It teaches kids to play together as a team for a goal, that without each other, they can not reach. It teaches them to count on others and to believe in themselves.

It is sad when even the American past time of baseball doesn’t look like it will survive to the next generation because of the economy. Today, I’m saddened for our society as a whole, because I have a feeling in 20 years, our kids won’t know how to work together for a common goal.

Sorry kids!

I know that times are tough everywhere but sometimes you just want to reach out and slap some sense into people. The same parents that say they can't afford the $50 to sign their kid up for sports are also the parents that will spend $60 for a carton of cigarettes a couple of times a month or $15 - $20 a week on a 12 pack of beer without blinking an eye. I don't even want to get started on the parents that are covered in $300 - $500 tattoos while their kids go to school in torn clothes and shoes that don't fit.

Todd --- I agree with Dan ---- and with you.  It is a very sad day in America when children cannot play the sports that they love.

TC,

Athletics and academics make a fine couple...!!! One seems to complement the other...!!! Cancelling T-Ball, however, is like firing your baby sitter...I'm all for home schooling when it comes to T-Ball...!!! Thanks,   Fran

So weird that you say that.  We've seen the same thing happen here as well.  "Luxury" items are the first to go.  Baseball is no exeption.  Like I said...it's happening here as well.

Todd,

I'm sure this economy is affecting everybody and everything. People are watching their money.

We've not seen that here so much, but it is sad if it happens anywhere. I hope that folks see your blog and "step up to the plate" to volunteer.

Some of my fondness memories growing up involved sports. It is sad we have so many financial issues that we can not fund kids sports.

Dan - I agree with you and it really is sad that these parents don't realize what lessons in life these kids are going to miss by not being in sports and being part of a team.

Mama Liz - I wish I could coach all three teams just to keep all the children playing.

Todd,

I'm afraid you may be right to be concerned.  So many people are having trouble in this economy.  However, baseball did survive the Depression.  So, it will likely survive this too.

Fran - I know your opinion on T-ball, but I don't think these kids will ever sign up if they don't have something like T-ball. Heck even with T-ball, 26 kids between the ages of 7 & 8.

Larry - Getting kids in to sports shouldn't be considered a luxury.

Terry - Kids don't understand that and they shouldn't!

Barb - I sure hope someone does also. I just wish I could take the 3rd team on, but just not enough time in the week.

Connie - I just wish the economy didn't have to hurt so many. Kids just don't deserve this.

Terry - It has been proven that kids who are involved in sports are better in school and are less likely to commit crime.

Christine - I sure hope so, it is a very different time and it has been losing ground the last couple years even with the economy booming. I'm trying to figure out how to set up a scholarship for kids who can't afford to get in to baseball.
