Memoirs from DFW

By
Real Estate Agent with The Berkshire Group Realtors

Today I got up early, I had to pack my bag and catch the shuttle.  My plane leaves at 10:30.

The shuttle came as scheduled on the half hour.  I hoped in and off we went, I was the only passenger. The driver was busy chatting on the phone, having a heating discussion in some language I didn't recognize.  We stopped at another big hotel to supposed pick up more passengers.  No one came. I looked at my watch and like a cannon going off in my head, noted the time.  I was late!  Oh my God!  An hour late!

Here I was in Dallas on Denver time.  There is a difference you know!

I exclaimed to My Driver, "how long to the airport?"  20 minutes.  "How long do you plan on sitting here?" Lady, you should have left earlier.  "I know! How LONG do you  plan on sitting here?"  Lady, I have to wait blah, blah, blah.  "OK, I know I should have left earlier, but I SCREWED up!  Can you help me?"  Lady, I have to wait until 9:52. You are supposed to leave 2 hours early.  "I know that, I did, except I left 2 hours early, Denver time. Can you help me?"  OK, we go now.

As we sped down the freeway I remembered hearing Zig Zigler talk about the 'agreement he had with the airlines.'  He says, "If I'm not there on time, you can go ahead and leave without me."

10:15 I arrive at DFW, the ticket counter is not busy, in luck?  No.  The nice lady behind the counter, shakes her head and says I need to wait until the next flight.  How many bags are you checking?  "one.  I need my power supply, let me unpack it."

The Attendant reissued me another ticket.  Off I go through security.  It's a short line, I  unpack the pc, remove my shoes, stash my lip gloss in my pocket (a trick learned here on AR) and walk through the xray thingee.  All is well, I redress, grab my jc and walk up to the gate, just in time to watch my original flight pull away.

Me and Zig have something in common.  They left without me.

Random observations
Airport food ~  why is it so bad? Does food going security make it worse?
TGI Fridays ~ just when you though Macaroni and Cheese couldn't get any worse they FRY it! yuck.
TGI Fridays ~ my fork is real, my knife is light weight plastic, homeland security in action.
TGI Fridays ~ very nice folks here, do not make me rush
Airport climate ~ is it intentionally kept low to increase sweat shirt revenue? Is there a law requiring aiports sell only shirts with the location printed on them?
Advertising ~ The Hyatt is offering a sterio to place your Ipod in. (assuming you have one)
Texans ~  very friendly, smiling and nice, they exemplify southern hospitally in action.
Tipping ~ I wasn't able to save my day, but I made the day of some foreign shuttle driver.  He tried, I appreciated his effort and rewarded him. Maybe he won't go home and kick his cat today.

What I learned
Clocks on cell phones adapt to local time
Watches need to be reset
Computers need to be reset
Bring a heavier jacket
I love writely

Kristal,

My heart was racing along with you trying to make up for the time change on your way to the airport.  I remember once, years ago, before all the delays, racing to the airport and getting there just in time to board.  So close in fact that we were not quite in our seats as they began to taxi down the runway.  Felt like I was on a bus.

BTW, don't they think you could hurt someone with a fork?

I am reasonably certain that the reason airport food tastes so bad is that it's cooked at the local football stadium and then brought to the airport. That lag time causes the food to aquire a whole new flavor!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, Kristal, you raise all sorts of important issues...

So, if I put my tube lip gloss in my pocket, I'm ok? What about my eye drops?

Yeah...airport food is just awful...and probably for the reasons David gave. And, have you noticed how over priced it is? Water at O'Hare is usually $3 a bottle...for that amount I could buy a six pack at Jewel (Albertsons).

And, I'm going to read the instructions regarding 'writely'. Took a look and it's interesting. I'm betting that Google's going to take over the world...and microsoft will just be a small part of them.

Geri, Yes, I remember the OJ ads, with him running down to the gate...I never had a chance.

Eddie, LAX is a mess.  What's new?

David, Are you sure they cook it at the football field?  I didn't think it was that fresh.

Donna,  Sorry to have missed you too.  I wish I could have had more time in Dallas (aside from freezing my tail feathers at DFW). The city was very impressive.  Maybe we can meet some o the time.  I hope your trip was good.  My hubby opted out of the crazy hair brained idea of driving down to pick me up.  (thankfully).  I'm home now!

Eileen,  You don't get to take eye drops, you get to check them.  I noticed a lot of people with carry on.  For me that would mean NO makeup bag.  Now that would be more frightening .... to the locals, me sans makeup!  :)  Yes Google is on it's way to replacing Bill's evil empire.

How many blogs did you get written or read while waiting for the next plane? There are always things you can do with "free" unanticipated time.

Kristal...there might be something wrong with me, but I absolutely love that fried macroni and cheese apetizer at TGI Fridays!!!!

Doesn't it scare you that you can sneak your lip gloss in so easily when it has been banned?  How easy would it be for an enemy of the state to replace theirs with liquid anthrax and now you just let them know how to bring it onboard.

I hate the post 9/11 world and I wish there was a way we could fix it.

Joshua, I didn't dare try the fried Mac.  I saw it on the menu and couldn't believe it.  No doubt it's good, everything bad IS good when it comes to food!

The lip gloss thing...I don't know.  IF they actually searched me, I wonder if I'd get in trouble.

I agree about fixing things.  I don't know how it will ever be fixed. Then of course we used to be scared of Moscow...

Kristal & JP,

Mr Lipnitz will tell us all that when someone is intent on doing harm... they'll do harm.  As you can imagine, I've gone over these types things hundreds of times.  I agree that it's silly that you can manage to get your lip gloss on a plane.  It is unfortunatly the world we live in.  Blame those who want to harm Americans just for being Americans.  I hate it too... but this is where we are today.

I would have given the friend Mac a shot, I bet its great!  ;)

Sara, we Americans have been very lucky to have gone so long, enjoying our freedom without barriers.  That fact came to me long before 9-11.  In 2000 I crossed more borders than I can remember when I traveled around the world.  Our country was the easiest, we've never had to worry about in outside attack (excluding Pearl Harbor).  I guess in that comfort, we have become accustomed and entitled.

Having to go through security now is a fact of life.  I'm cool with it and not really complaining.  I just don't believe we are safer for it.  Like Mr. L says, if they are intent on harming, they will.

I always wear a 2 faced watch, the watch has the 2 faces not me! I keep the top one set at Baltimore time, the bottom one on West Coast time. When I am traveling the bottom watch is set to where ever I am. It has really helped.

Maybe you should get one Kristal.

Margaret, that is a good suggestion. I've seen watches of that style before, but never really thought about the application.

Thanks for the suggestion!
