What Motivates you to Be the Best Realtor you Can Be? Part II - The Need to Dream Big!

By
Real Estate Agent with Harrison Hot Springs, Cultus Lake

Earlier this week I wrote  What Motivates you to Be the Best Realtor you Can Be?   So please read it if you haven't yet...it'll make more sense if you do!  I decided to make it a Two Parter so I could get some feedback before I continued on with my story... AND did get some interesting feedback!

Thats one of the most amazing things about Active Rain -the incredible Contribution the members make....... My Part II was heading in a different direction...and then I had to pause and reflect on the interesting comments.........and how  different people interpreted my question in different ways.  Actually that one thought....that of 'perspective'... never seizes to create 'wonder' for me.:-)

I was looking for something straight from your 'gut'...deep in your 'spirit'...stuff....something beyond the the basic getting up in the morning because you 'need' to make the 'mortgage payment' - or put the 'food on the table'....Because I believe for most people.........that is NOT ENOUGH....I can tell you that proof is in the pudding!

Some of us are self driven and self motivated.....and have no patience for those that aren't, isn't that true?  For you it can be anything from 'being the best you can be - using yourself as a yardstick........to paying for your kids' college, to the thrill of competition...to the pleasure you get from a job well done, or helping a client achieve their dream.

But what about those that aren't feeling their Mojo?  Those that not only  do not feel motivated...but are having a hard time even getting up in the morning?  What can they do to change it?   I think there is a general consensus that...we cannot really inspire, motivate or manage them to success....So what then?

Well this is my premise...........I believe that many of us have forgotten how to dream.  Either that or we didn't have a dream to begin with - or over time have forgotten what it was.   Or put even more  simply....Our Dreams just aren't Big Enough to inspire and motivate us.  I believe the reason so many Realtors don't get very far is because they don't have an inspiring long term vision that leads them, step-by-step, into the future.

As Victor Hugo said, "There is nothing like a dream to create the future." We need a dream, and we need to dream big!

          !

In business terms, the dream is typically called the Vision, and it defines the final destination of our business. The dream tells you where you are going and becomes, in effect, your North Star.

Maybe.......you just lost sight of your North Star?  How do you find it and restart your journey? Any ideas?  Any Lost and Found Stories You'd Like to Share?

Stay tuned for Part III - Finding Your North Star :-)

We ALL set boxes around us.  Some tiny, some small, some large and some huge.  It is all a mindset.  I sat down with 2 of my new agents that set goals of $5million this year.....This will be there first year.  I said why not $10 million.  That was out of there box.  So I broke it down to the simplicity.  I said can you sell 2 homes a month.  They said sure.  I said, to sell $10 million, you don't even have to sell 2 homes a month as our average price range is $500k.  This month, one of those agents has already sold over $2.5 million.  They will make $10 million with ease.....even in this rotten market as I have got them off the dollar amount and on to the number 2.

My North Star.  Interesting.  I have a vision of where I want to be when I die, but I must say, I enjoy the serendipity of the journey too much to navigate there in a straight line.

When i die, I want to have made a difference.  How I do that keeps changing, but I just keep contributing (at my office, to my board, to my kids, to my husband etc.) I don't want to regret how I lived my life. Honestly if I died tomorrow, I would feel I had lived a great life, and I'ld be satisfied.

My north star is always shining.  And just like a sailboat rarely sails directly at it's destination, I keep tacking... zigging and zagging. I'll get there soon enough.

Sorry for being so Woo-Woo.

Just because I can. I have a passion for people. It does not matter to me what the product is. I just love customer service and helping someone feel awesome at the end of the contract.

Liz,

You are right to focus on a person's Big Dream for motivation but many people have been knocked around and had the dream squashed in their lives.  For those folks (and I believe the majority of people fall in this category), they need to connect and thrive on short term reasons why they should push through their comfort zones to achieve success that they believe they can't achieve or don't deserve.

To achieve tremendous success we all must push through self-limiting thoughts and doubts and to do this we must figure out what it takes for us to move out of our comfort zone and create that success that leads to the Big Dream.

You can tell your team exactly what they need to do to move beyond their comfort zones to attain great success but most won't do it even if you spoon feed them the action steps necessary to get there.

This is where the dream comes in and along with the motivation you discussed in your previous post.

Tim

Liz - For me it's not just "The Dream."  There has to be a "WHY"...a very BIG WHY in what drives your motivation to succeed and inspires you to reach towards that glimmering North Star and the journey beyond.

Donna -Yep - often there is a Big Why - and its not attached to a dream....and there can be a Dream without a Big Why attached to it..........either will work I think - with a plan :-)

Tim - Yes I agree - many have had the big dream, or several dreams knocked out of them..part of the course of life I guess........but the beauty of it - there's always room for another dream.....because without Hope there really is nothing - is there?...  I think short term and long term goals are important........somewhere somehow its good to have a grand scheme - even if it has to be - or you want it to be - reworked on occasion :-) Mot often like you say -it means stepping outside of your comfort zone ' over and over again'...thank you for the time you took to comment!

I like big dreamers... but I love people with vision.  Vision seems to have the connotation of action.  We had a business planning session with a group of agents.  They had big dreams but no vision as to how to get there.  To me, it is all about having a plan to get there.

Liz - I have a better answer to your question than my woo-woo one above.  I have a mission statement that I created a few years back.  It holds true with everything I do.

To support my family and my retirement through being a Realtor.  To keep being more educated about real estate, the market and the process of selling homes, and to always do what is right for my clients, regardless of my personal gain.  To strive to increase my reputation in the industry, and to build a business I am proud of.

When I considered blogging, it fit in my statement.  when I was asked to be a director of our local Board, it fit. Chatting by the water cooler - doesn't fit.  Looking for my why, which for me is my family, it's easy to fill in the blanks of what I need to do.

Hi Liz,

What motivates me to be the best realtor I can be?

I love what I do!  I love meeting people, I love learning about their lives, I love playing an integral role in helping them transition to the next stage of their journey.

Where I am in my journey is right here, in real estate.  I cannot imagine a time when I won't be doing this, but I try not to look too far ahead and instead trust in the path that I am walking; for if I follow it with a true heart, it will lead me wherever I need to be.

My vision/dream is to live Mother Teresa's words:  "In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love."
