Cats and the weather

If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and leave a comment.Zoey the Cool Cat (picture at left) often wonders why she can't go outside more often. I do take her out to the back patio sometimes so she can sit on my lap and dream about catching some of the hummingbirds.

I tell her that The Weather Channel forecasts rain, and even though we live in sunny San Diego, Zoey the Cool Cat hasn't yet caught on.

She does like to tell me about the weather forecasting ability of her ancestors and often meows, surely wanting me to let her try her paw at forecasting. Zoey the Cool Cat has been reading Planet Cat, and here are some of the forecasting abilities of her ancestors:

  1. A cat sleeping with four paws tucked under itself means cold weather is on the way.
  2. If a cat washes behind its ears, it will soon rain.
  3. When the pupil of a cat's eye broadens, it will rain.
  4. Cats running around wildly means winds are on the way.
  5. Cats clawing a carpet and curtains signify bad weather ahead.
  6. A cat sitting with its back to the fire indicates tht a cold snap is imminent.
  7. A cat sneezing once means rain.
  8. Washing a cat will bring rain. (Even today, the Korat, a native cat of Thailand, is sometimes ceremoniously sprinkled with water to ensure enough rain for the crops.)
  9. A cat scratching itself against the leg of a table means the weather will soon change.
  10. If the tail of a sleeping calico cat is turned to the north or east, a storm is approaching. If it is turned toward the south or west, fair weather is ahead.

When Marci, which looks a little like Zoey, starts scratching up my furniture, she is telling me to get up and feed her or give her water.  She knows if she does it long enough, I will get out of bed and tend to her.

This is her one day after I found her.  If only she was as sweet as when I found her.  Well.......

We have thunderstorms in our forecast, and my cats are all asleep (like I should be at this time of night).  However, if we get some thunder they will be on alert.

Who knew kitties were such good weather predictors?!? Does it work the same for dogs too?

Izzy has his own system of forecasting.  If he's outside and he's getting wet its raining.  If his paws are full of mud it rained recently (of course, this means he must run through the house). There are more, but I think I'll save them for a future blog.

Hi Jim - some of these I've heard before, from cats I've had of course.  The one I "knew" from childhood was the washing behind the ears.  In fact, when he was about 4 or 5 years old my little brother used to avoid washing behind his own ears when he wanted to play outside because he was afraid he might make it rain!

Hey, Angelia.

Marci is adorable. Surely she is just as sweet now as the day you found her....

Hey, Ann.

We don't have much thunder here. We've had Zoey the Cool Cat for 18 months now and she hasn't had to experience thunder, just the garbage truck that goes by every Tuesday.

Hey, Matt.

Get supplemental income from anywhere you can. Out here weather forecasting should be easy:

  1. January - rainy, cloudy, or sunny
  2. February - cloudy or sunny
  3. March - sunny
  4. April - sunny
  5. May - sunny with possible clouds
  6. June - cloudy with possible sun
  7. July - sunny
  8. August - sunny
  9. September - sunny
  10. October - sunny
  11. November - sunny
  12. December - rainy

Hey, Betina.

I be willing to bet dogs have their own system, perhaps something like this:

  1. One bark - sunny
  2. Two barks - cloudy
  3. Three barks - cloudy with possibility of rain
  4. Four barks - rainy
  5. Five barks - rainy and windy
  6. Six barks - hurricane or tornado
  7. Seven barks - I'm outta here

Hey, Jack.

Betina needs to talk with you. Izzy has a much more simplified system than what I just came up with.

Hey, Susan.

Sounds like your little brother and the cats were bonding. Is your little brother now a weather forecaster? LOL

Cats running around wildly means winds are on the way.

It must be windy every single night here, right around 10:30-11pm

Hey, Jim and Maria.

That's why I only have one cat. Makes it difficult for cats to run around wildly. LOL
