Rain Blogs or WordPress? Wrong question! A solution & REsources...

Hi guys... this week I thought I'd give you a sneak peek at something I've been working on to try and address/solve a question that comes up more often than I can count...

garaughty, blog design, graphics, marketing, wordpress

Almost every week I get emails from fellow Rainers asking something along the lines of "hey marti, I'm thinking of signing up for an ActiveRain outside blog but I'm also thinking about using WordPress, what should I do?".

Since this question has been around for months and doesn't seem to go away, I thought I'd answer it publicly to give you my opinion and a preview of a solution that should make everyone happy.

Full disclosure... for those of you new here, I design/install custom WordPress blogs and I also create many of the graphics you see here on ActiveRain blogs.

garaughty, blog design, graphics, marketing, wordpress

Here's my very short, to the point answer. Anything that brings in quality leads/prospects, makes you $$$ and helps to build or extend your brand is a smart investment. Whether that's on WordPress, ActiveRain, a static website, LinkedIn, Twitter or whatever. It's not "either/or".

garaughty, blog design, graphics, marketing, wordpress

I think a lot of the problem comes from misinformation that makes things look more complicated that they actually are. Much of the info I've seen posted here about WordPress leaves out pertinent details that can be more confusing than helpful.

Take a look at this post by Linda Greco... Paralysis by Analysis

I know Linda's post speaks for a lot of people because I receive the same type of emails week after week after week. If you're not tech inclined, this stuff can seem like magic at the best of times and totally overwhelming most of the time.

Another factor is the cost. Somewhere between the less than impressive freebies floating around the net and the ultra expensive custom jobs are other solutions and possibilities. And that's one of the projects I've been working on.

In the coming weeks I'm going to start a new series of tutorials on Wordpress for the "tech challenged" that will cover everything from...

- choosing a domain name from a marketing point of view

- finding a reliable webhost

- connecting your domain to a web host

- installing & setting up WordPress

- installing a theme

- using your ActiveRain blog header/graphics in a WordPress theme

- connecting your ActiveRain blog(s) to your WordPress blog(s)

- and a ton of other stuff that I won't bore you with today

garaughty, blog design, graphics, marketing, wordpress

A few months ago I mentioned that I'm "preparing to introduce some new stuff to help you to stand out from the crowd more than ever, not just here on Active Rain but on the net and in your local area"...

Now that I'm winding up a few large projects I've been working on I'll have more time to head in this new direction. My WordPress series is something that I see a BIG demand for so I've been putting the pieces together in a way that's easy to understand & use. And if you think that you won't be able to do it...

garaughty, blog design, graphics, marketing, wordpress

If you can read plain English (no tech talk), you'll be able to do this!

Since I have more projects going on than I know what to do with, I'm cutting back on stuff that sucks up too much of my time to design projects & products that will help more people than I could ever do customizing stuff one on one.

I'll post more details about this new project as soon as I finish the tutorial I started a few weeks ago about The Art Of Marketing YOU on Twitter, etc... And the Pittsburgh/Philadelphia hockey game is starting in a few minutes so I gotta run. Have a great week...

Lisa... thx, I try to keep my sites/blogs looking clean. I love hot graphics but it's only a showcase for the content. Both have to work well together.

Kate... re "favorites" wow, cool. ;-) When I helped Diane fix/redesign her blog after a really bad experience she had with another company, I also created a new theme & graphics so she'd have the custom look she wanted. Thx for the nice comment/feedback. Much appreciated!

Jane... the reality of being online is everything matters. Top quality content to get/keep interest, SEO to be found and a great presentation. Missing any one of those will have a negative effect on everything else we do.

Marti,

I read Gary Vee's article and it's an eye-opener. It really highlights what draws people to certain blogs, in this case wine, a definite pleasure source. What's happening to the Habs?

marti... I think I can add my «grain de sel» to those testimonials. I had both my website and blog entirely designed (with original graphics, themes, wall paper, etc.) by marti and it was the best business decision I ever made. And yes, everything has to be there...  technically and visually speaking. My sites have a real HOT look yet they're sober and elegant, easy to navigate through... thanks to you marti, my biz is booming! ;) You're top notch (and the best!)...

Troy... learning WordPress is fairly easy, if you're already blogging most posting works the same. My series will cover setting up WP on a self hosted platform so you're in total control and can customize it without limits.

My webmasters are rebuilding my entire website on a wordpress platform because they did not originally put me on a content management system. I do have a wordpress blog right now. So am I suppossed to blog on that and then copy and paste those blogs into active rain? I am really confused about how to streamline everything.

I wish i would have found you sooner, because they are taking forever, AND i am the first for them to integrate the IDX solution, ect on a wordpress blog.

Jessica... hi, nice to meet you. For flexibility in use, customization and pure SEO love, WordPress is the way to go. I design over 90% of my projects on the WP platform. Sorry to hear your guys are taking so long tho. That's another part of the equation.

But how do I connect wordpress and active rain? Do i have to do everything twice?

Jessica... WordPress and ActiveRain are 2 different blog platforms, they don't connect. You can add links to either one leading people to another blog but it's like having 2 different websites.

So it is just an administrative pain for me? I have a readership on wordpress, but am new to active rain. i was going to take content from my website and turn it into blogs for activerain. Is this a good strategy. Do I need to think about active rain in terms of SEO as well?

Jessica... hi, re "I have a readership on wordpress... i was going to take content from my website and turn it into blogs for activerain"...

I don't think there is an option right now on ActiveRain to import content from another blog. You'll have to ask the AR people to be sure.

Re "Do I need to think about active rain in terms of SEO as well?"...

If you want your content to rank high and be found on search engines SEO is important everywhere on the web.
