One of the very first things to know, when a First Time Home Buyer or any Home Buyer. Are looking to buy a Log Home. Not all Home Inspectors, are qualified to inspected a Log Home. They are just not a other homes.

This is the first of many posts, that I'll be doing covering Log Homes.

(A bit of History)

A lot of folks are drawn to log homes, and the appeal of folks owning a log home sure has fuled the development of the modern log home industry. There are over 400 manufacturers, ranging from the small sawmill operations to sophisticated, full service housing companies, serve this growing market.

Log Homes have been a part of America's housing heritage ever since the colonial days.

This is a Franklin Home

With the abundant forests and the availability of large treea made log homes and shelters an easy solution for colonial housing needs. Because early log homes or cabins were so often used for temporary structures or interim residences, they were usely constructed hastily, they were also poorly sealed, and illmaintained. With the men and women of colonial days, having and working only with minimal tools and primitive knowledge, just about anyone could build them self a useful shelter that would last the few years needed, until they could build a proper home. Later on from the vantage point of their proper home, many who started lifr out in a log cabin. Looked back with nostalgia on their rustic structure.

Dale we don't have many log homes in our area. I don't believe I have ever inspected a log home. If I have I don't remember.

Howdy there Steven, Carl and Ceil

Its always a real pleasure to have Y'all stop by to visit, and to read your comments. On a post, here at my little ole Blogging Homestead, my friends

Steven - Moisture and rot, sure can be destructive to a Log Home. Moisture along with sunlight, sure can accelerate the damaging and discoloring effects in the wood cells, and can cause cracks to start forming on the wood surface. And then you have specific levels of moisture that supports wood destroying rot fungus, mildew, sap stain, which are also a necessary requirement for many insect infestations. So it all comes down to folks, keeping up the maintenance of their Log Home.

Carl and Ceil - When inspecting a Log Home, theres sure is a lot more ya have to look for with them. Than with a regular stick home. Plus theres a lot more to building a Log Home. So they usely cost more for folks to bulid and buy.

Hey Dale, as Carl said, we don't have many older log homes around the San Antonio area.  I found a post you might be interested in reading and commenting on by my friend Marchel Peterson (in Spring, TX).
