Tribute to My Father in Law

By

Frank Alters, Jr. a WWII Naval CorpsmanMy Father-in-law joined the Navy at age 18 and served in Key West, FL and other places, before shipping out to the South Pacific in WWII. He is still with us at age 90. He talks about some of his life in the war but there is much that he chooses not to share.

His was a brave and self-sacrificing generation who grew up in the Great Depresssion and then found their youth seized by a war. They didn't complain. They fought and came home to their families and began careers or continued in the military.

Frank retired from the Navy in 1957 and opened a piano store and tuning business. He became known throughout the Jacksonville area as the best person to tune a piano and he sold the finest pianos.

He didn't lost his life in the South Pacific, but he sacrificed greatly for his country. We remember his service and sacrifice this Memorial Day.

I love this photo of him, shot last Fall during the Blue Angels Air Show.

He defended the flag that flies beside him, to give us the freedom we enjoy to agree or disagree with our government or another blogger. Let's not take it for granted. Freedom isn't free. It must be won every generation. Happy Memorial Day.

Sharon,

Salute to your Father-in-law. They did not choose this life, but rather this life chose them to defend the freedom and die for it. Freedom is  really never free, and it always comes at the greatest cost of all, the human life.

So many did not come

Thanks for the post.

Thanks, Jon. You can definitely appreciate the value of the freedom we have more than people born here. You know the difference.

Sharon, Your Father-in-Law and all those that served with him sacrificed so much so that we could enjoy the freedoms we have today.  Thanks to him and all other veterans, whether with us or not, we can spend this day with family and in freedom.
