HUMBER BAY BUTTERFLY HABITAT

By

Butterflies are extremely vulnerable to habitat loss.  Each species of butterfly requires a specific group of plants an which to feed, lay eggs and develop.

When any one of these plants is missing from its environment, a gap is created in the life cycle and the butterfly may be unable to survive and reproduce.

The HBBH Home Garden has been designed to demonstrate how butterfly habitat can be easily incorporated into your own backyard.  The three perennial flower beds integrate native and ornamental species which attract a wide variety of butterfly species.

The shrub beds offer shelter and food as host plants; while the stone walls act as a great spot for butterflies to warm themselves in the sun.

A GARDEN IS AS STATIC AS A PAINTING, UNTIL A BUTTERFLY BRINGS IT TO LIFE. (Jo Brewer)

Good information, Sylvie - There is a butterfly local to our area that the forest service is taking steps to help by planting it's favorite kind of bushes.

Hi Sylvie, I also was not aware of the Humber Bay Butterfly Habitat.  Have you ever been to the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory?  It is North America's largest enclosed butterfly conservatory and is a short drive (appproximately 15 minutes) from the falls.

Wow ... I didn't know so many people like butterflies.  I love them. :)

Monique, thank you ... and I'm sure they're already headed there. :)

Rita, me too... thank you, and enjoy yours as well.

Debi, I had not seen this habitat until just yesterday, and I'm very familiar with the area.  I'm glad I went ... I'll visit more often now. :)

Al and Peggy, it's just south of Lakeshore, at Parklawn.  I wasn't crazy about all those new highrises going up, when they started building there, but they've done a great job on the waterfront there.

Marc, I was just in Niagara Falls recently, and I had no idea they had a Butterfly Conservatory.  Where have I been? :)  I'll have to check it out.  I go to Niagara Falls a couple of times each Summer.  Thank you for the information.  :)

Very true, Charles.  They are beautiful. I was watching a couple of them 'sunbathe' yesterday.  It definitely put a smile on my face.
