Early Morning Blues: Good Story, But I Can't Upload Photos

By

But Officer, I was only doing four mph!

Edit:  It's 10:00 p.m. and I was able to upload a photo!  Yay!!

I've got some great photos and stories to share from the past week.  One in particular...  I was walking a desert road on Sunday night, with reflective fabric and a flashlight. There was no moon.

If I see ten cars during a six mile walk, it's a lot.  Each time a car approaches, I'll step off the road and shine the flashlight backwards toward the approaching car so I don't get waffled.

Three miles from home in Tucson Mountain Park, I heard a car approach.  As I moved off the road, I heard the car slow down.  It didn't pass me.  Blue and red lights reflected off the surrounding cactus.

"Evening, officer" I said.  "I was only going four miles an hour."  I was already reaching for my ID.

Another Pima County Sherrif's car approached from in front (we're in the middle of the desert) and made a U-turn and parked behind the first car, whose deupty was running my ID.

I stood there leaning on my walking staff.  I heard one deputy call to the other "I'm pretty sure it's not him."  I was pretty sure he was right, and I said so.

Turns out that there had been a high speed chase six or eight miles to the west, ending with the car off the road in the desert, and the driver fleeing on foot.

I sure wish I could show you the photo!

Mike, I'm sure it is much cooler but more dangerous too! What did they think when you took their picture? LOL

Connie,

The officer never mentioned it.  We talked about interest rates for awhile before they left.  I'm off for an early morning walk; thanks for coming back to comment.

Hi Mike,
Glad you weren't not the guy they were looking for!  Like your wife, the first question that came to mind was "did you get permission to take & post their photo"?

Cynthia,

Me, too!  And I subscribe to the idea that it's easier to obtain forgiveness than permission.  LOL

On a separate note, your comment was Number 13,500!  Email me a "snail mail address" and I'll send you congratulatory gourmet brownies with a "thank you" card.  I take care of my subscribers in the Rain!

Mike,

That deputy doesn't look like he's convinced you're not a perp!  LOL  Good thing you had your ID on ya.  Jenny might have had to verify your story at the police station!  Yikes!  How in the world did you manage to get this officer's photo as he's walking up to you?  I have to say ... that's not the usual behavior of a 'wanted' man.  :)

Mike:  Couldn't leave a comment yesterday, AR glitch I s'pose.  I am amazed that you were able to get a picture of a police officer coming toward you!  Seems to me, you really kept your cool in a what had to be a tense situation.

I assume that you weren't cuffed and taken in for questioning. Sometimes these guys get a little too exited about catching someone, and they assume guilt. I would think that walking desrt roads at night could be a little exiting anyway.

It's a good thing you didn't encounter the fugitive.

No time to read comments, so this may have been said...

Please always walk facing traffic, so you can see what they are doing.  Yes, something reflective on the front and back of you!!  They will see the flashlight and the reflective.  The main thing is you will see them!!

P.S.  This applies to daytime walking, too.  It's always best if you can see them way down the road and judge if they are awake and alert.  (lots of people aren't and don't even see a walker or runner)  If they miss seeing a motorcycle...

I would have been in trouble as I don't carry an ID when I walk.  Glad you had it with you and things were taken care of quickly.  I sure hope he told you have a good night after that.

Mike - Do you know what is so hillarious about that picture?  It's that you had the "forethought" to point your camera at the patrol car with officer approaching, because you take blogging more seriously than any trouble you could be encountering.  Someone should start a "Blogger Unplugged" group, and present an award to you for that picture:-)

Myrl,

If he had asked me why I was taking his photo, I would have told him about Active Rain.  Thanks for commenting!  I'm a blogging fool!

Kim,

I always carry ID except in the swimming pool.  The officers were real friendly.

Doreen,

Sorry about the SMS Text to landline.  I didn't know it would make your phone ring.

Sandy,

That's a thought!

Larry,

Pretty much, walking at night in the desert is peaceful and reflective.  I've never had a problem.

Donna,

Thanks for coming back to comment; it was never tense.

Carol,

I think he saw things your way.  There's always something to blog about, isn't there?!  LOL

Well Mike, I had to come back and see if you posted the photo.

From the photo it looks like the officer has his hand near his holster and the look on his face is well let's just say you were much braver than I would have been. I would have froze, thereby not snapping that great shot!

Cynthia,

He had a sense of humor about the whole thing.  I'm likely to see him again; this is a pretty small community.

I track my mileage using a GPS program on my Blackberry, and it says I "rested" for 13 minutes.  "Mind if I take a quick shot?"  LOL

Mike - sounds like quite a walk. I like your comment "It's mostly real quiet at night, and it's good for the soul.". I used to walk about 3 miles three or four times a week with my dog and loved it - I need to get back to it.
