An Organized YOU is a BETTER YOU

Computer ScreenSomehow this image is what I imagine my computer desktop as well as my life should look like because

An Organized YOU is a BETTER YOU.

It is true you know. Everything should have a folder or a place for it. I understand folders with computer files and places to store papers and nit nacks at the house. I must admit I am having a problem with the flow though. More in, than goes out. The "velocity" of the in stuff from all areas of my life keeps increasing.

And people wonder why I have second thoughts about more inputs like Twitter and Facebook.

Decluttering all areas of our lives as any Feng Shui expert would say, HAS to increase our energy. Then again, there is that thought that an immaculate desk is the sign of a sick mind. Surely we can strike some balance in our lives of "reasonably neat." Cleanliness is next to Godliness? God must not be happy with me lately.

Do you struggle with the decluttering of your world too? Surely I am not the only one in this frenetic world we live in nowadays. But look at that landscape. Peaceful. Serene. Makes decluttering almost worthwhile.

Dear Gary,

One word that is brought to mind...decomPILING!!!!  I decompile laundry, mail, the office..I decompile the piles of stuff on my desk.  When I decompile the piles, I make new piles!! LOL!

One of these days I'll finally get organized!

Hi Gary,

I LOVE this business....I HATE the paperwork!  I am convinced that there is more paper in my office than I put there....do papers breed?

I'm thinking yes.

Ugh.

Oh boy, do I have friends out there?!!! I love information, research, creative ideas, good writing, crafts, recipes, textures, textiles, packaging, marketing, quotes, inspiration, tips, how-tos, cutting edge, cute stuff, innovative stuff, event planning, etc., etc.... sigh....I could really use a professional organizer...I'm drowning!!!!! I'm a bit of a clown on a Kon-Tiki raft in real estate!

My desktop is organizzed but my desk I am in the process of reorganizing and decluttering. I have a tendency to keep too many articles, magazines, etc thinking I might need them. Then one day I decide I have too much clutter and out goes the old so I can enjoy the new. My work habits, I have a sytematic approach otherwise I might forget or overlook a detail. It works for me. Personally, I think organization is great but spontaneity is oh so much more fun. Have a great day!

Gary - the more technology driven this world becomes, the more I feel disorganized. Why is that?

Being organized makes a big difference -- work on something , if not every day, every few days, to stay organized.

This is very true. Having systems in place makes life and business much easier.

Gary,

"If a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what's an empty desk?" I work at it, though.

You have inspired me to clean off my desk. I have a rule that everything goes off my desk and I work on one file at a time.  I have been breaking it lately and I think that is why I have been so overwhelm.  I have a testimonial for Feng Shui though. I had my local Feng Shui expert, Josiah Bouricius, redesign my office space and it real makes a big difference in my energy.

Great points, Gary.  Spring cleaning doesn't always have to happen in the spring, right?  A clean desk is a clear mind.

Hi Gary, I am one of those decluttering advocates.

If I want business to start coming in I delete all the telephone numbers from my Blackberry that I can't remember who they are or haven't had any dealings with for over a year. Magically the phone rings with new business. Feng shui at work I am sure.

I have to say, I have a very organized computer, files that are filed and important dates (waivers etc.) programmed in to remind me in a timely fashion to check on the progress of various deals. But, aside from that, my real world desk is often a disaster.

I used to fret and get upset by it - but over time I've come to realize something. If you are busy being successful, decluttering at the expense of client service can actually harm your business. I make certain what has to be put away is put away in it's place and once every week or two I do a mass culling of useless paper and either put it in my box for reuse (the blank side), shred it, or recycle it. But other than those few hours every couple of weeks it's all about the clients - and I think the various studies out of Harvard Business School and other respected sources suggesting that neat and tidy does not in fact indicate greater productivity or success has made me comfortable with my reality. That, and many of the most successful people I've know - particularly entrepreneurs, have been absolute disasters when it comes to full on organized minimalism.

To each his own - just don't let anything get in the way of doing the job properly - but aside from that, to each his own! ;o)

Organization is critical--it just feel different for everyone!

Does anyone else ever feel like paper is taking over their lives?  I am a constant shredder, recycler, tosser, but it just keeps on coming!
