Mike's 52 Weeks of Thanksgiving - Thank You Vinton Cerf, DARPA et al, and a Happy 40th!

Many years ago, in a galaxy far far away

Oh crap, that line has already been used!

Perhaps I could start with Once Upon a Time...

But then, this is no fairy tale.

Anyhow, 40 years or so ago, Vinton Cerf, at Stanford, along with several other cohorts, were asked by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) to develop a communications network system, primarily for defense purposes. It soon became a defense and research network, and, in the 80's blossomed into a public network called the World Wide Web, or Internet.

I had the fortune of meeting Dr. Cerf and hearing him speak a few times. I also had the good fortune to work with some of the developers in LLL, LBL and Sandia labs in implementing what was then ARPAnet (or DARPAnet) from which the internet evolved. (I was a contractor helping chose and deploy communications equipment for the network).

But what I am really thankful for is the powerful tool and toy that it has become, especially for music. Just today, Sheldon Neal posted about Blip.FM, and introduced me to a new toy.I can now add this to my arsenal of Internet music sites, along with Slacker, YouTube and others.

Just today, I have been in the mood for some classic Latin Rock and have been enjoying the heck out of some of the music that I heard growiing up in and around L.A. Groups like

Santana

Malo

El Chicano

and many others. My wife and I enjoy dancing to the Malo tune.

So, thanks Vinton, I am not sure if 40 years ago you ever envisioned this. I know that I, nor the engineers that I worked with 30 years ago did. But, it has opened up so much for me and everybody else. Thanks.

And I promise, when Nancy and I are dancing to Suavecito, there are no thoughts of Vinton Cerf, the Internet, or even Al Gore.

I was wondering how far down I would need to read before Al Gore's name came up! Lol!!  Most of this stuff goes right over my head.  I have satellite radio and still listen to my old CD's of Barbra Streisand instead.  I'm glad you are enjoying your music!

Susan - thanks, I just like to remind people that I actually did take part in the development of the internet, but only started taking credit after Al's taking credit for it.
