During our normal hot Texas summers, we all need to do our part to conserve water. Clean water is a precious commodity that many people take for granted. Here are a few things we can all do to save a little water. Some are logical some sound kind of silly, but each of them save water.

water

1 Create a rainwater collection system in your yard. You can get rain-barrels from the City of Austin. Use this water to water your lawn or flowers.

2. Always water your lawn/landscape between 9:00pm-9:00am. This reduces the amount of water lost to evaporation. This means you can water less often and still save money too.

3. Check your sprinkler system and fix any leaks and reduce wasted water.

4. Install low flow/water efficient toilets in your home. The City of Austin has a great rebate program. Their are even dual flush toilets availale now. These toilets really save a lot of water!

5. Install a water efficient clothes washer.  Only run the washer when you have a full load of laundry. If you can, have your laundry waste water diverted out into your yard to water your grass instead of going into the waste-water line.

6. If you choose to keep your old toilets, take a one liter soda bottle and fill with water and place in the tank so it does not obstruct the flapper and ball-cock. This will reduce the amount of water used with each flush.

7. Here is the funny one- I just heard on the radio that if every man in the USA went #1 in the back-yard just once a day, that it would save over 40 Billion gallons of water each year. (if I made you laugh -great. If I offended you-I am sorry)

The point is we can all do a little something to help conserve water. It is our most important resource and we need to work now to conserve it. Thanks for spending two minutes on the blog. Have a great and waterwise summer!

Sincerely,

Betina Foreman, Your south Austin Realtor

Betina, Item #7, is funny, but, I know there are many men out there who would love to hear this news, and do their part to help save water--- wouldn't it be the same if they just didn't flush once? That may be offensive to some- if so, I apologize, too!

I had to laugh at #7. Out here the water districts are actually promoting toilet water conservation with the slogan, "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down." I think it was originally used in the severe drought of the late 1980s and has been brought back. Like all good advertising slogans, this one apparently is timeless, too.

My resident expert here says that you should water in the wee hours of the morning, like 3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., not at night unless you have a soaker hose, drip hose, bubble heads, or hand water. The reason why is because you actually do want the water to evaporate off of most of the leaves (excepting hibiscus where the water on the leaves helps prevent white fly infestations) in order to prevent mildew and other water damage to the leaves, stems, flower bods, and other new growth.

Dear Carole,

I have done #6 since the early 80's when I first heard about water conservation and recycling. Thanks for stopping by!

Dear Mary,

Most guys are perfectly willing to do their part! If your in the country it is a double win, as human urine is a deterrent for deer. If you want to keep the deer from eating your expensive landscaping "treat it" by using the advice in #7.

Dear Kristin,

I have been recycling and water wise since the 1980's. I have even gotten friends and neighbors to recycle and conserve. Thanks for being part of the solution!

Dear Jim,

I remember that "mellow" slogan back in the 70's. It was popular with the hippies/counter-culture people. I am glad to see it has made a come back! Whats old is new again and so cool and retro!

Thanks for the tips about avoiding wet leaves and using soaker hoses. I am sure my hibiscus's will be happier with a little shower.
