When to Remove The Chive Stuck in Your Teeth

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Claude Cross-Charlotte NC Real Estate(Homes By Cross, Inc.)

In this myopic business, sometimes even the best delivery is overshadowed by the obvious. To point: why show up when you personally don’t show well.

This is a stopping point in this post for those who refuse to dress for success. If you are a top producer with a bed head and chives in your teeth, I guess I’m in need of your infomercial because I don’t get it. Probably never will.

If first impressions are a major factor in how clients select agents, why show up looking like bevis or buthead?

I am amazed at agents that have a bohemian attitude concerning decorum and dress. I think I’m suffering from a form of jealousy because I could never pull off a grill smile in baggy pants when dealing with clients. Those that can …my hats off.

So here is the purpose of this post: You spent so much effort to gain that qualified client. Why are you in such a hurry to turn them off?

What is your dress style and how does it relate to your effectiveness?

If you are a woman, what really works for you? And for men, do you see a professional dressed image a positive to wrapping up clients?

Have we become too casual?  I guess I’m wrapped in the past. But I have no apologies.

I watched and mimicked based upon what I perceived as effective. This was a golden rule. Show up looking like a professional and odds are you will reap professional results.

I must be getting old …or stuck in my ways…either way …I have an old school label that I won’t tear off. What’s working for you?

I too believe that.  I was at a closing the other day where the agent looked like a slob.

I know I just told my husband that I would not be going to the gym in the morning. I have an AM appointment and I want to be "spot on", groomed, relaxed and having recently reviewed all up-to-the minute comps.

It seems an agent's attitude to presenting themselves is similar to our Seller's idea of clean - its all relative!   I believe in a professional image 95% of the time.  When I'm working with kids buying their first home, I'm a bit more relaxed; smart casual I guess.  What is accepted as the norm is down to the Broker/Owner of each office.  We've had people sent home who were not suitably attired for the office or tour.

Interesting post, Claude. Living in a resort town in Florida gives me a slightly different perspective. I've developed a "formula" for looking professional. Since it's often very warm, I wear skirts, slacks or city shorts to suit the weather usually paired with sleeveless tops. Then, when I have an appointment or have to go out to public places, I put on a jacket that completes the outfit and adds a finished and professional look.

I believe sometimes one must dress to their client.  That does not mean I wear jeans unless it is going to reos that I know will be filthy.  I want to fit in and not have my attire detract as being too intimidating nor too casual.  Just the "frame" for the great Realtor I want to be to them!!

A decade of excellence!

I got this quote from the tv the oher day " I cannot control how I am perceived. I can only control how I am presented." If that doesn't sum it all up I don't know what does. We have to do our best in our presentation of ourselves, after that it' out of our hands.

Claude...

Your title grabbed me! Good job on that. I do dress appropriately when meeting clients, but on hot days like this I will forsake long sleeves and a jacket!

Claude:  What someone usually finds me dressed in are slacks and a dress shirt.  Simple, clean lines.  No outrageous patterns to my dress.  In winter I love jackets.  Don't feel the need to be the full blown equivalent of a man in a suit, but I don't wear what I am seen in around the house.  In fact, I feel guilty if I have to run by to grab something from a client in my civies.  Makes me very self-conscious.

Chris Ann -  I know what you mean about what we wear around the house.   I had a client recognize my car in the driveway and apparently knocked on my door but came right in . . .   needless to say, we were both shocked - YIKES.

I am typically in a suit and tie anytime I do anything with my business outside my home. Once and a while I will take off the tie, but that's rare. I am the only person in my office that ever wears a suit or tie, but that's just how I dress for business. Now in all honesty with the temperature nearly 100 degrees here lately, I am suffering for my dress code.

Claude,

I dress for success. I have 10 of the SAME outfits, monogrammed shirts, blazer, slacks. All the same-it's my branding.
