(LAKE TAHOE REAL ESTATE BLOG) One of the more difficult things we face as real estate agents is taking time off... and not feeling guilty about it. There is always something to do, and we’re always on call. That is the nature of our business. In addition, we’re also sole proprietors of our own “start-up”, which in this case means we’re still very much building our business, even after five years of success and experience in so doing.
Like most professional agents, we are independent contractors with state licenses that are hung with a brokerage, in our case with Dickson Realty, the largest real estate brokerage in our area by far. Our practice is our own entity, our own “brand”, so to speak. We are basically sole proprietors of our own business with an association to the brokerage. The brokerage is the prevailing responsible entity, though we share both a responsibility to the brokerage and specific fiduciary duties to each and every client.
Our standard of care is always to the client first, everything else is subordinate. The broker guides us, though we are absolutely responsible for our presence in the marketplace. We assume all of our costs and expenses, which very much includes everything having to do with advertising and marketing.
This blog is very much part and parcel of our “brand”. It is unique not only to our area, but perhaps to the country as a whole. We know of no other marketing resource that consistently provides the depth and quality of the real estate information and statistics that are found here. “All of the Information... all of the Time” is our goal. “Information is King” is the concept behind it.
Providing the scope of real estate information found here is very much a Web 2.0 approach to marketing. We realize, and it is our intent, that we are providing a public service. This is contrary to old-school real estate thinking, however. That is characterized by a gatekeeper mentality, which manifests out of this thought: if I keep important real estate information private, people will have to call me to get it. We believe that people will call us, and they already do, because we provide the information 24/7. We are not a real estate information gatekeeper; we are in fact conduits to the essential information we believe every Buyer and Seller needs to make the best, most informed real estate decisions possible. And they can do so in this market at their leisure, off our blog, any time they want, without pressure or influence, in the privacy of their home.
Conversely, this blog is always a work in progress; it is never “finished.” It also takes a lot of time, and it does so daily. Today for instance, I started working on the blog a little before 7am, it is now 3:38pm and I’m still at it.
Nevertheless, and we know it’s essential, and healthy, it’s very difficult to take a guilt-free day off. Sometimes it takes months before I succumb. A day off, though, is not the same thing as attending activities and school enents with Olivier, my wife’s 13-year old son. We always do all of that, all the time. Ohter than that, our practice, our intention to build a meaningful, helpful public service, and all of our clients are always there. And we’re always willing and eager to serve.
