Watch out, I have the keys...

Services for Real Estate Pros with Timu Corp - CEO, ActiveRain - Co-founder

Earlier this week Ben who's done the vast majority of the development work on this site left for a 3 week long vacation to Germany.  Instead of letting things stagnate, he handed off the keys to me and I will try to pick up on development while he's gone.  Should be interesting...

While I've done most of the design work, I've only really poked around with the coding side of things.  In fact I've never written anything before in the technology (Ruby on Rails) that this site is built on.  After about a week of playing with stuff, things don't look to bad, and I'll have some new features coming down the pipe pretty quickly.

I spent most of this week working on performance/stability of the site.  The site appears to have gotten significantly faster (1/4 of the load on the servers, same # of users)  Hopefully after I put the next batch of changes up, the 500 errors users have seen under high load should be a thing of the past.  I also made some changes that I hope should really improve how search engines index and rank the pages on this site.  It will be a few weeks until we know how successful those have been.  A lot of this involves how we display tags for blog posts, if you haven't seen the new method try clicking on a tag.

Next I'll take another try at getting the really cool blog/profile searching back up again.  We had put it up about a week ago, but had to disable it soon after because it caused our servers to crash.  Then back to work on targeting content at consumers...

Ben's baby may look a little different by the time he gets back :)

Matt, I'm newere here, but have been reading your blogs; and I'm so impressed with Active Rain and wanted to thank you for all your hard work.  It's fun to do something out of the ordinary, isn't it! Supposedly we only use 10 percent of our brain....I always think when we try something newer, it activates at least one more percent for a bit !   Thanks for all your hard work!

Hi Matt, When I get 3 or 4 pages deep as I go through the blogs, I find one to comment on. When I'm done, I have to go back to the beginning and work my way back to where I was. Is there an easier way to just continue reading from where I left off?

Hi, Matt - you took your shorter vacation, now it's time to do the work of two.

Noted two changes since earlier this evening - No more rating Up or Down. Also we need to put in our name and e-mail. I guess this is to eliminate the commenters who aren't identified, but since in the past version you knew who we were when we commented, can't this be used only for nonmembers and save time for us, since we've always been identified automatically?

Sharon, it looks like you're logged out.  If you comment when you're logged in, you don't have to enter your name or email.

David, one non-programming solution is to use a tabbed browser.  I open individual postings in a new tab, that way, I don't lose my place  in the big blog list.   Just a suggestion.

Thanks for all the tweaking you've been up to.  I've also noticed on the blog dashboard that the "Posts tagged by region" area no longer includes the abbreviations of the states (for example, FL for Florida).

David E. -- the only workaround I've found for the issue you describe is to right-click on the blog post link I'd like to comment on and choose "open in new window". Then, after you've commented on it, close the window.  Works for me.
