Balance in Design

symmetry

Sometimes I find myself drawn to buildings that are symmetrical in design. There is something reassuring about the organized layout of the details as well as the repetition. When looking at buildings like this, I find that my eyes will zero in on the details and then zoom out to see the whole. It's a very relaxing exercise. Perhaps the relaxation is part of the reason I such an affinity for this type of architecture.

Great exercise Maria.  You should post this to the Name That Photo group.  Let everyone guess where this lovely structure is.  Too bad those types of exercises don't let us lose weight lol.

Gorgeous building and photo, Maria! I love the blue sky, too.

And I agree with Jenny -- it would be fun to have it in the Name that Photo group.  Now, if we use our eyes to look at the details and then zoom out, does our eyesight get better, too? :)

I also like to stare at symmetrical typee architecture. This seems  almost to resembles Aztec or Mayan.

Maria, I also find a sense of order and stability when there is a balance in design, especially like your photograph!  Somethings don't go out of style!

Jenny, I'm starting Bootcomp to get my body in sha;e next week.

Thanks, Shoshane. You know there are eye exercises that are very similar.

Trey, it does a bit, doesn't it?

Thanks, Robert.

Maria, It is an interesting exercise and I often find myself staring at architecture others don't even notice....they wonder what I'm looking at.  I think people are either facinated with it or don't really notice it.

I think Carole is right, many folks don't even notice the detail and beauty around them...

That they do, Caron.

Carole, you're probably right; we're either drawn to it or just don't get it.

Debi, "don't notice" is probably true.

The days of brick and mortar craftsman seem to have ended and it is sleek steel and glass on the landscape of today's buildings.

I love simple picture of architectural elements - even brick work patterns.  I can't imagine the skill of the tradesmen who built these buildings.

I think that there are still some exceedingly skilled craftsmen in existence. Unfortunately, few people want to pay for the time it takes to create intricately beautiful buildings. Sleek steel and metal speak power.

I'm also a softee for symmetry in buildings. Interestingly, I don't like symmetry in my garden or inside my house. Go figure.

Ray, I guess the inside space we live within would feel a little strange if it were symmetrical.

Thanks Ann.
