Colon Cancer My Survival

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 Olde Tyme

Hi everyone I am back and thank full to just be alive, Let me explain. Starting early last year my medical provider ( Kaiser Permanente ) sent me a blood occult test kit. The first one they sent had pieces missing and therefore was unusable. After a few inquiries ( it seems this was a new program for them and no one knew who was in charge ) I was able to get a second test kit mailed to my home. This time my kids ( the dog, cats etc. ) promptly lost the kit. Because of what the test could represent I was getting a little worried. I then found that the optomology dept. was distributing the kits with patients yearly eye exams ( Diabetics which I am one ). Third time is a charm I took a sample and promptly mailed it to there lab.

Woa then came the call that they found something and would like me to come in for a colonoscopy. We where scheduled for the week after Thanksgiving 2008. The result "Mr. Beaver you have stage three Colon Cancer". Wow scarry no matter how I was told. Surgery was scheduled for January 19, 2009.

Well this part is really surreal, Imagine what is going through my mind. The number two Cancer Killer in the nation and on the day of the surgery I show up with my wife. In sweat pants carrying my drivers license just carrying the bare minimum and with an expectation of a 4-6 week recovery if everything goes well ( It did and did not ).

I wake up in Late March 2009 and find out that I have been asleep ( in a coma ) since the day of surgery. The good news is Colon Cancer Cured, No Chemo or Radiation needed, The bad news is I had 3-4 heart attacks 3-4 days after surgery.

I could go on and on about the road to recovery but the good news is I am out of the hospital and Re-Hab walking again with only the assistance of a cane and back to work with some assistance.

If there are any cancer anything survivors out there please comment on this post. What I am writing here is only the tip of the ice berg. Especially since being back the number of people that I know that have passed away due to heart attacks and in comparison to my battle makes me wonder why I am still alive and they are not.

Sincerely,

Doug - What a story. Sounds like there were many prayers that were answered and there is a reason why you are still alive. Congratulations on your survival and being cancer free. There is no better success story.

Wow, Doug

To be stage 3 without needing chemo is great.   Your road has been hard and will probably still take determination to be back to normal.

My mom got colon cancer in 2002 and battled it for 4 years.  Because of that my doctor made me go get a pelvic sonogram which I thought was ridiculous and not needed. So I did not go get the test until 2004 when they found uterine cancer.  Because it was found so early surgery took care of it & I did not have to have chemo either.  I have been cancer free for 5 years now.

As you share your story you will find that cancer is common; it is surprising how many people have had cancer in varying stages.   It is a common bond.

I wish you the best as you battle your way back to a full recovery.

A study came out the other day stating that a daily aspirin regamine is somewhat effective in preventing colon cancer.

Thank you everyone, Throughout this ordeal I have met many many people both personally and online. I swear I have had a million plus people praying for me. I thank you and them as well. Three days after I went into the hospital my wifes Mom fell and broke her knee in multiple places. Three days later she died of a blood clot. She was in her 80's but very healthy and full of life. It makes me wonder considering at one point they used the electric paddles to jolt me back from death and even told my wife to go home and prepare for my passing. God bless my wife ( I keep telling her I love her more than life ) She told them to go to hell and take care of her husband. Well it has been a tough road but I will not et her dwn or the many many who have prayed for me in my fight to regain full health.

Thank You

Hi Doug - Welcome back to AR and to the world in general!  I am a cancer surviver, but I almost don't even think of that any more, since it has been more than 20 years since my surgery.  Unfortunately, many in my family have had cancer of various kinds.  Most have survived, but my sister did not.  I know how you feel about survival confusion.  I have often wondered why I lived and my sister did not.  She was a wonderful woman and very much loved.

Doug, my husband had prostate cancer over 10 years ago. We changed a lot in our diet during that time and learned a lot about how to take better care of ourselves. You have been blessed to be here and no chemo is fantastic!

Not a cancer survivor patient but I can relate.  I lost loved ones to cancer.  They've been through a lot (as I'm sure you have) but they're still with me in spirit.  You are very lucky indeed, my friend.
