Advice From Irma Bombeck! What would you do differently if you had to live your life over!

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Teri Ellis at Homes Arizona Real Estate LLC

I promised that I would share another one of my thoughts, stories, poems each Sunday.  I've collected them for years to use when I teach. If we look at our choices we are making today knowing now what tomorrow would bring, would we make the same choices? Would our focus be on things of import such as family? Friends? I love this following group of thoughts as penned by Irma Bombeck in a letter when she found out she was dying from cancer. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It brings my thinking up short and helps me "settle" down.

It is entitled:  "If I had my life to live over"

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa was faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the "good" living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television - and more while watching life.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realised that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, " go get washed up for dinner."

There would have been more "I love you's" and more "I'm sorry's".

But, mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute...look at it and really see it ... live it .. and never give it back

I guess we all have to learn not to sweat the small stuff and to cherish our loved ones and our friends because you never know when our time on this earth is done. Don't worry if we don't have what other people have or if we are liked or not. I think we all have to learn to slow down and stop to smell the roses.

I know I would do everything I have done to get to this point. If I hadn't then I would not have learned...and believe me I learned the hard way (my mom used to tell me that)  What would I do differently from now until later? Who knows...having too much fun (for once in my life I am having a ball...instead of worrying about everyone else and everything else I worry about me...without me I would not have them...did that make sense?)  Have I told you I like coming here?

Thanks for stopping by Sally. I do know what you mean! I think as we go through life, we figure out "some of it," but every now and again, it's a "good thing" to reflect back on what is really important. If we don't take care of ourselves first, we won't be able to take care of anyone else.

I am a huge Irma fan. I have read this many times.

Every time I read it it reminds me of the reason I enjoy living "on the edge" ...

Translated...Burn that fancy candle...Baby...Burn that fancy candy :)

Hi "lovely wife":

Yes, I am the same about Irma. She always said things so well.

This was fun for me to review as I sent it out - and remember what is really important in life. Yes, burn that candle - don't save it! I'm always catching myself saving things for "later."

Thanks for dropping by........:-) cute signature!
