A Dog Story From Tricia Williams

This is another story from Tricia Williams. One day she was telling me this story, so I asked her to write it down so that others could get a good laugh.

Thor the dogOkay, I spoiled my kids, am currently in the process of spoiling my first grandchild and am even working hard to spoil my dog rotten.

I never even intended to have a dog at this time in my life (I'm middle aged, am divorced, and run my own business); but my oldest son needed me to take care of his huge...and I mean huge dog while he was on the road with his band.
A year and a ton of shows later; Thor (the aforementioned dog) is still hanging out. If Josh, my son, thinks he's getting Thor back; we'll have serious custody issues!
Thor weighs about the same amount as me, and is part Pit Bull/ part Lab/ part small cow.
That makes Thor super perfect! He's black and white, short haired, and muscular like a Pit, and definitely has a Pit head (large and boxy). His legs and body are shaped more like a Lab. He also is smart and friendly like a Lab, but can turn on the 'bulldog' and be scary and intimidating. He is the best watch dog I've ever had and actually should be paid the $39/month instead of ADT.

Thor has an interesting habit that I have indulged...much to my regret. He likes to go out in the middle of the night to hang out with his doberman mix girlfriend. He usually wakes me up around 3 or 4am by bumping against my bed with his massive tail until I stumble out of bed to go let him out. Usually his girlfriend is already in our yard eagerly waiting for him. They're so cute and excited to see each other every night, that I just can't say no. When I get up in the morning Thor is always right back on the deck waiting to be let back in.

A few weeks ago, I woke up, went straight to the door to let him in as usual, and was terrified and blown away by a very recognizable horrible smell! Obviously, Thor had visited someone else in the night! He had most definitely had a skunk encounter!

I immediately called Bear Creek Kennels to see if they could squeeze him in for an emergency skunk bath and treatment. They really didn't have time, but out of sympathy told me to bring him on in..
On the way to pick him up I started thinking that maybe if he had a little doggy friend that lived at our house, he might not feel the need to go out every night to hang out with the neighbor's dog.

So, once I did the smell test and had the check writing out of the way, I asked the groomer if they ever had clients let them know if they needed to find a home for unwanted dogs or puppies. She said they really didn't, other than people were always asking if they had purse sized, tiny, lap doggies. I immediately told her that that was not at all what I had in mind; I wanted a medium sized, scruffy dog to be Thor's little friend. She got the funniest look on her face and told me to wait a minute.

Out she came with an adorable little Schnauzer mix. She said someone had brought him in for a grooming...4 MONTHS AGO...and had never come to pick him up! Can you believe that??? Poor little guy had been living in a kennel for four long months. What in the world?

Well, that's the good news for me and Thor; we adopted little Jeffrey to be Thor's at home companion. I have to say every part of their relationship is wonderful! They adore each other, share toys, rough house together, sleep together, dig together, and yep...here's the bad news; go out every night around 3 or 4 am to meet Thor's girlfriend. So much for that bright idea!
I never needed one dog to spoil....now I have two!

April - Thanks for the advise. I hope he learned his lesson, but our area is full of skunks right now.
