It's What You Do When People Aren't Watching....

By

It's what you do when people aren't watching that speaks to your character.  It's how you act when you are not trying to impress, but when you are among friends or hidden from public view.

A lot of our jobs as Realtors is to impress. To get out there and put our best foot forward.  That's when we are trying to get business, right?  But shouldn't we always lead with our best foot forward?  Why would we act differently in public than in private?

We should really try to imagine that our clients, or potential clients are watching us all the time.  Pretend they are just over our shoulder, standing behind us.  Or reading what we post here on Active Rain, for instance, in leaving Members Only comments.  Would it make a difference in what you say?  Or how you reacted to something to which you took exception?

Try to imagine those things you say or do, while hidden from public view, as being exposed to the public.  You have no way to retract them.  How would you feel?  Embarassed?  Small?  Petty?  Or would you feel any trepidation at all?  After all, if you are true to your character and the public matches the private, there would be nothing to worry about.

Remember, it's what you do when people aren't watching that speaks to your character.

Chris Ann-I've flagged this for a feature.  Members of AR need to remember that "members only" post can be viewed by over 150,000 other real estate professionals.  AR is a living community and as such members need to realize that unprofessional behavior is noticed and could impact your bottom line.

Cindy:  One of the reason I often will not allow reblogs of Members Only posts.  Members Only posts do serve a function, but should not be a place to unleash a two-faced personality.  Be consistent in your presentation and you will never have a problem, that's what we need to remember.

Hi Chris Ann-I have a book on this very subject entitled Who are YOU when nobodys looking" It is so true that many people have a pubic image that is totally different than their private image. Kind of hypocritical if you ask me. People can be fooled sometimes by a person's two sided image but you can't fool God. He sees everything. Great post.   I wanted to thank you for the very nice reply on your post from last night. That was very nice of you. Hope your day was wonderful. Enjoy your evening. <SMILE>

Chris Ann...

I agree completely. Your character is what controls your actions and it comes from within!

Richard:  Sadly there are always folks here on Active Rain, as you learned yourself not too long ago, that will surprise you with a nasty attitude.  I had my first nasty-gram yesterday.

Hi Chris Ann- I am sorry to hear about the bad exchange. Why do some people have to be rude or mean. No reason for it. Hope you are doing better and consider the source of that bad exchange. You my friend are a wonderful and caring person and I am glad to know you. Sleep well. <SMILE> Here is a pic for your night to put a smile on your face. Goodnite my friend. <SMILE>

Chris Ann...those who leave nasty or worse kinds of comments are those who do not make good decisions; they have no care as to what their comments say about them. Just remember, they are the only ones really 'hurt' by the words--you feel the sting for the moment; but in refusing to join their ranks-pun intended- you raise yourself up high.  good for you.
May I say to Sharon how delightful is that picture--they look so sweet--we had a Calico named Princess--she was named by her first owner--she lived up to that name--she wasn't quiet even during sleep.  I want your cats--ok just one.  We had 6 animals 12 years ago & now 0 for the past 4 years. 2 Dogs & 4 Cats all in this house. Now God has the fun and the noise. Enjoy your pets.

Chris Ann- so true. Be true to yourself both in and out of public view. Members Only is a HUGE network that reaches across the states so.... enough said :)

With today's technology it's easier that ever to "expose" yourself to the world and once you've posted it you can't take it back so you need to be careful what you post.

Matt:  True.  But we all make mistakes.  I can lose my temper with the best of them, but when I fly off the handle, I am not too big to go back and apologize.

Alan:  I think there is a comfort level here on AR that comes with time.  That comfort level can really show you who a person is.

Your character really is revealed in private moments when you think no one is watching.  Very good post.

Anne:  Too many two faced people in the world if you ask me.  That's what makes meeting someone whose insides match their outsides really special.

This seems to be the topic of interest lately...how do we act on line, how should we act on-line...

But there is one thing that is true, how we act when we think no one is watching tells more about us than anything. And there should be consistency between our off-line and on-line personas.
