Whether you love Microsoft or hate them, this is a big day for them as they have officially released their latest operating system: Windows 7.  Initial reviews have been mostly favorable (then again, they were favorable for Windows Vista also).

There are two major flavors of Windows 7, a 32 bit and 64 bit.  (You must have a 64 bit procesor to install 64 bit Windows 7).  Then there are three sub-versions of this operating system: Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate.  To compare the differences of these versions, click here.Compare Windows 7

Minimum requirements for Windows 7 is at least: a 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor, 512 MB of system memory, 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space, Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of, graphics memory, DVD-ROM drive, Audio Output, Internet access. (More RAM is recommended).

For those with Windows Vista an upgrade is possible (but clean installs of a new operating system is always recommended).  While those with Windows XP or earlier will need to do a clean install and re-install all programs and data.

For additional information visit the Microsoft 7 Home Page.

Gabe,

I have been running W7 Release Candidate and Internet Explorer 8 since August, and think they are great.

Software vendors like Zipforms, and our MLS need to come to grips with it, and with 64 bit OS's, and with IE8, but W7 and IE8 are both nice improvements over Windows XP and IE7, in my opinion.

Gabe, I wasn't aware you had to do a clean install with Windows XP. I will continue to use XP until I have to upgrade. Thanks for the update.

Michael, there are some vendors releasing some migration software to make the transition easier from XP.

Mike, I too use IE 8 where I can't use Firefox, but for the time being, I'm still on XP.

Debbie, many recommend you don't update operating systems until after the first service update.

Good luck Sally and David.

Gabe, I wrote a post about MAC OSx v/s Windows 7 not too long back. I am not a huge Microsoft fan. Based on my past experiences with Windows, I will wait until they release service pack 2 or maybe even 3. Hopefully, by then, they will have worked the bugs out...

Michael, I just wont participate in the MAC vs Microsoft debate.  Each is free to use the system of their choice.

Gabe, I saw them on sale at Costco yesterday. They even have a multi ack upgrade. I just recently bought a laptop with Vista and I am still trying to get used to it. I wonder how long till sp2 comes out. Seems to be pretty common with Microsoft products.

Randy, I'd upgrade to Win 7 if you have a recent laptop.  It's supposed to be pretty stable.  All operating systems have service packs (including MAC OS's)

Direct X Graphics throws me in the system requirements. Unsue if I have that in my one year old laptop. I picked up a Windows7 copy yesterday but was unaware that is starting from scratch on XP. This means I would need to use one of my newest laptops with Vista but I am concered about glitches with various Real Estate programs. How do you like it so far?
