Homeless in Fredericksburg

Our local paper The Free Lance Star ran an article June 25 on homlessness in the Fredericksburg area.  There were a total of 561 homless people.  There was a chart that further broke it down to specific counties and or cities.  For the city of Fredericksburg there were a total of 199 homeless people.   56 adults who are at the Thurman Brisben Center, http://www.brisbencenter.org/), 15 at the Hope House http://www.hopehouseva.org/ , 29 at Cold-night shelter, 62 school children, 1 un-sheltered child, and 36 unsheltered adults.

These numbers were a bit shocking to me as you do not see what apears to be that many homless people.  I was more shocked when I further looked into the chart and saw how many homeless children there were, many un-sheltered.  To be more specific the area included Fredericksburg City, Stafford County, Spotsylvania County, King George County, and Caroline Counties.  Here are the totals for children 408 sheltered, 9 un-sheltered.  So, of the 561 homeless 417 are children and 144 are adults.  That is an awful lot of children without a home!

I am sure we are not alone with this problem.  Sure I donate to Goodwill regularly, I also send in extra snacks to my sons teachers for those who "forget" theirs at home, I also give the teacher extra money when it is time for a book order or field trip.  I know there is more I can do...I just need to do it.  What is it that some of you do to help homeless children?  I am open for suggestions, I want to help.

Homes in Fredericksburg Va are very expensive to even those with full-time jobs.  Homes for rent in the same area are equally as axpensive.  The options for those with little or no income are close to none.

What is it like in your area?

Dawn, this is a wonderful post.  People seldom realize that there are so many homeless families in their area.  Sure they see those standing near the traffic lights holding up signs asking for work/money; they forget that there might be children associated with those pathetic souls.

You are a very thoghtful and kind person doing what you do for the homeless.

Those of us who are more fortunate than the people of whom you write can help!  Some of the old faithful organizations like the Salvation Army can always use contributions.  Wondering what to do with the old fashioned (but functional) chair you have?  Donate it to the Salvation Army.  They need just about anything we are willing to donate.

Great post girl!

Jennifer -  Thanks for the suggestions.  I will be sure to check into after school programs when school resumes in the fall.  I hope that I will be able to help in some way.  I was shocked as well.  You do see a few at intersections around busy areas...but rarely if ever have I seen a child.  It breaks my heart.

Ed -  I always wonder when I do donate to Goodwill or Salvation Army what happens next...  There is a big problem nationwide of poverty.  I am most concerned with the children.

If I give to a school it will go to a family with innocent children.  But now that school is out for the summer what happens to them?  At least when there is school they are given free breakfast and lunch 5 days a week.  What do they do during the summer?  Christmas break?  Spring break?  Weekends?

What shocked me the most was that 74% of the homeless in the Fredericksburg, VA area are innocent children

Very interesting...the graphic I need to type in is "Passion"  should be compassion.

When donating $$$ make sure you donate to a Non-profit company, otherwise the majority of your donation is paying the salaries

of the company.

Perhaps you and your family could start your own foundation.

Wow! That is a very depressing number.  I read in the Free Lance Star that some area churches are serving dinners on Saturday evenings now.  So, if I have it correctly, the homeless now eat every day except Fridays?  I am not a rich woman but I would like to start handing out lunches to those who are hungry.  I thought about it, and can buy bread at a discounted price at the bakery thrift store.. in all I may spend $40 for 100 lunches.  I need to cut out McDonald's anyways...  Do you have any suggestions of whom I may contact regarding my idea?

 Thanks.
