I agree with this comparison.  We moved to Greensboro, NC from Toronto, ON and immediately felt we got much more for our income after moving here.

My son started college at UNC-Charlotte and his roomate from NY was stunned by the lower cost of eating out in Charlotte as well.

The downside in some cases is that you have to have a decent job no matter where you go, and often the lower priced cities have less opportunities there.  But, for retirees and college kids this really works.

Thanks Athina. If you are unemployed than the cost of living is very high anywhere! Cost of living in Charlotte is under half of NYC- and we've added more jobs in 2009, thtn this time 2008, through 3 quareters. Unemplyment is a big problem until we get manufacturing kick started again...
