Galloway "Belted" Cows - Southborough, Massachusetts

Galloway cow - Claudette Millette

As I was driving through the back roads of Southborough last week, I came upon a herd of "striped cows."  I had to get out of my car to get a closer look and spent some time watching these amazing animals as they peacefully grazed.

This group of 13 belted Galloway cows, or " belties" as the locals call them, roam the conservation land near Breakneck Hill Farm in Southborough, Massachusetts.

Belted cows originated in South West Scotland and are distinguished by their white belts of hair surrounding their bodies.  Due to their unique appearance they are sometimes referred to as "Oreo cows." cows - Claudette Millette

The care and feeding of this local herd is supported by a number of events that are organized at various times of the year.  The Breakneck Hill Cow Fund was started in 2001 when the ranch owner sought help to defray the cost of maintaining these animals.

The cows feed on three bales of hay twice a day and at a cost of $6 per bale, the cost of their care adds up quickly.

The most recent event given in their benefit was a Texas styled poker tournament which was held earlier this month in Southborough.

More information on these Galloway cows can be found at the Official site of the Breakneck Hill Cow Fund at Southborobelties.org.

Claudette,

Well...I have seen lots of cows...but the "Oreo" Cows are new to me!  They look pretty stylish with their black attire and white belts!

Hi, Katie:

Yes, being in this area I am not surprised that you have seen them. However, last week was the first time for me and it happened quite by accident.

Lori:

You are right.  It's a bit like a tuxedo.

Paul:

I am not that talented with photos - these are the real thing.

Hi Claudette:

We have lots of dairy farms here in NJ, but I must admit, I've never seen a white belted cow before.

Very neat...

Claudette:  Those are really striking cows.  And the stripe makes them look so thin.  (Couldn't resist.)  I never knew such a cow existed.  Thanks for showing us all here about those Belted Galloway cows.

Chris Ann:

Aren't they striking?  They could have played it safe in basic black but are pushing the fashion boundaries with that bold stripe.

How fun!  I learned something new today on AR.  Do you know of any other striped cows?

Pam

I just saw some of these cows today in Oklahoma (November 6th).  I was raised on a black angus cattle farm, so the sight of these belted beauties made me slow down as I drove by.  I had to investigate on the internet, and found this! Now I know they truly exist, thanks!

Yes, they do exist and are quite a sight to behold.   Come to Southborough and you can see them in person.

We were in Alexandria Bay, NY for the weekend and saw  these striped cows.  We have never seen them before.  We had to stop & take pictures of them. When we arrived home we researched it on the internet.  Very interesting!  We even saw a couple of babies.
