Lovin' My Shiny New iPhone!

By
Education & Training with WickedWriter.com

Ok, I wrestled with the decision... but I did it. I broke down and got an iPhone on Friday -- despite the lines and the road-trip required to pick one up. (Maysville, over an hour away, was one of the two locations in KY that didn't sell out in the first hour -- so I made the trip!)

I now have one shiny, new 8 gig baby and after a weekend with it I must say... I LOVE IT!

Before this, I was carrying an old cell phone (because I flat refused to buy a new one until the iPhone came out), a 60 gig video iPod, my digital camera and all the "accessories" to keep all those things charged and working.

I must admit, my purse is quite a bit lighter, more organized and... well, dang it... my phone is amazing! I'll probably not carry my Tablet PC nearly as often as I have been with this little tech pet in my pocket (or purse).

I realize that Apple wasn't (supposedly) going after the business market, but this is one cool little business tool, IMHO. I think it will be especially appealing to real estate agents. Over the next few days, I'll be blogging about my finds over on my "other" blog: WickedBlog.com.

I must say that the mapping with the satellite overlay is much easier to use and renders incredibly well on the little thing. The viewable area is over twice the size of my video iPod for movies/videos. And the image you see to the left is one I took of my daughter Saturday morning, using the iPhone camera. Not bad, eh? I'm working on business apps now -- web-based and sync options. And while I'm typing this, I'm listening to my favorite playlist. It's all pretty sweet, I must say.

Jealous, aren'tcha? :)

I heard on NPR www.npr.org that it was slow on the internet.  Maybe slower than expected (as in how the commercial depicted) did you find that to be the case?

How much is the Data package plus your voice package with ATT?  Also, is it $600 before or after contract?

I've been using a Palm Treo 650 which just died.  The 700p has more memory and is supposed to be faster on the internet, but I won't be eligible for a trade-up until October. I like the Treo, but of course am limited to Palm OS.  I think the I-phone has a considerably slimmer form factor.

Brian.  I have the 650 too.  It's limping, right now.  In all fairness, I am not kind to phones.  :)

Barberry is my graphic.  What's a barberry?

Chris - Having had data plans before, I don't find it to be slower than the full (read: $60 per month) plan I had with Cingular before. It surprised me that it seems to move a bit faster. I'd assume that's because of the pocket-sized rendering, except for the fact that this uses the Safari Browser and is rendering the same webpages that my Tablet PC rendered. *shrug* And, if I'm at home (or around any wifi connection hub, it's flying at DSL speed -- which is REALLY nice).

Joe - The basic data plan (the one I have) is unlimited internet and 200 text messages. It runs $20 per month. Since I'm not a text-person, this works for me. The plan goes WAY up to get unlimited text messages. The way I figure it, I can email as quickly as most people text, so why would I pay extra for a smaller message?

Brian - I had the Treo 600 and then the Treo 650 (*two of those*) and I loved them. I loved them so much that I actually maintained a website for over a year just to help real estate agents use the Treo for business, called WickedTreo. (The archives are over on WickedBlog now if anyone is interested.)

iPhone vs. Treo: iPhone is slimmer, has a larger screen, easier-to-use buttons (even for larger fingers), has a longer battery life has better speakers (for listening to movies and/or music on your phone without a headset), has a great headset that's also a mic for the phone (and I had a special one of those for the Treo that I loved from Boxwave -- this one is better). The higher definition screen is a BIG deal with the iPod. Remember the difference between how the Internet looked on the Treo 600 compared to the 650? Well, there's at least that magnitude of improvement between the 650 and the iPhone.

Suzie - Thanks, I'm loving life with this little thing, and finding new ways to expand the usefulness by the moment. It's a darn shame I have to actually work today -- or I'd spend all day playing!

AAAUUUUGGGGHHH!

You are rubbing this in our face.  I want one badly.  Hope you enjoy your toy and make sure you don't leave it laying around.  I bet it will be the next big thing to steal.

Hope it works well for you, someone said some of the features were real slow and a 2nd generation was coming out in a few months with a correction

Ronnie - Yeah, allow me the luxury of rubbing in while I'm paying off the bill, ok? :D

Leo - I'm SURE they will have a second generation soon -- simply because the thing is so cool (and is, IMHO, the best thing ever created by Apple). I don't find the features to be slow (at least compared to my Treos) but I would always like faster! And... a bigger hard drive would be fantastic. I'm afraid I'll really miss the space on my 60 gig iPod soon!

I am jealous, but I'm not falling this time.  My dad bought the "first" Macintosh, I bought the first Imac Dome shape (Salad Bowl) macs, and the first MacBook with the Intel Chip.  The first mac was great, but quickly outdated the whole use one disk to start up, another to run the program.  The Dome shaped iMac was quickly replaced with the flat panel version, and the MacBook has had numerous issues with shutting down and falling asleep and me having to hard restart.  All the bugs have been worked out, but a year of headaches with the thing I am finally happy with it.  And I STILL haven't bought the darn Windows software I got the darn thing for also!  So I will admire your iPhone from afar, but I am waiting for the 60 gig with a little better ear set :)

Miguel - *Dancing* Yeah, well, we can't all be the "technology broker" like you up in New York -- some of us have to be the consultant with the most cool toys -- even down here in little ol' Kentucky.

My hubby came in my office last night (I had the iPhone dock plugged into my speakers with a thumpin' bass box) and he said, "Oh, WOW, is that your PHONE?!?!" And just for a moment, my techno-phobe husband was jealous. I saw it!

You SAY you don't want one... but I know you do. *gloats at Miguel tapping foot to Finger Eleven album on iPhone*

Hey Miguel,

I did not think I wanted one either until I played with it.  It is a very slick piece of design work.  Once you start to interact with it and discover the way they implemented the interface it will be hard to resist.

I want one now but alas, Angela will have the cool phone as I am stuck with Verizon for a bit.
