I have a love/hate realtionship with online Q&A.

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Residential

Okay, I admit.  It's as addictive as heroin. I just can't stay away.

I go on, just to peruse the questions and answers.  I'm not gonna comment... no, I'm not gonna comment.

Oh, lookit what that person said... I can't believe it... no, no... hold back... there's someone defending that position... good.... good.

Oh, wait... this guy is taking on the world.  And the answers he's getting are wrong, wrong, wrong...?  What am I gonna do??? What am I gonna do!?!?  I said I'd stay out of it... my wife made me promise I'd stop.  Oh, crap, where's a phone booth when you need one!?

I change into my "OBVIOUS-MAN" costume... and hit the keyboard... ooopps.... I'm sitting on my cape.

"dear Mr. Trulia Commenter... (taking the high road)... maybe you didn't quite understand what was being asked, as your answer is illegal, here in Illinois and 17 other states as well"...  (250 characters later... phew... there, that should explain it pretty well!).

"Oh Really?!" responds "Anti-Realtor#27" with no contact information  "all you Realtors stick together".

(deep breaths, deep breaths)... I know... I'll be very professional... here are a couple of links to the Department of Justice, the National Association of Realtors, and the North Shore Board of Realtors who explain this situation very clearly... I'm sure he'll respond well to that...

"Is that all you've got, Mr. REEELLAAATOR?!?!"... "propaganda from NAR, the propaganda arm of Reelators worldwide??   Great time to buy, Good time to buy!!  Got to buy!!"

er... that's not what I said... here, let me link you to a couple of other things.. I'm sure you've misunderstood... linky, linky, linky.... there that should do it...

"youse realtors is all alike... "

Why you smarmy little twit... if you have half a brain, you'd know that.... oh, wait... I can't do that.... high road, remember??? Lots of people reading.... comes off bad....  delete, delete, delete...

I think I'll just turn the computer off, and take my keyboard and go home, and live to fight another day.

- heavy sigh -

Too Funny!  I love Trulia as well. Alan,do you have it set up to  prompt your smart phone  when a question is asked in your target area? That is a cool feature. It blows home buyers and sellers away when I answer in a few minutes!

Personally, I only answer local home buyer and seller questions. How about you?

Debe - I don't know what you mean.

Janna - they're everywhere, they're everywhere!

John - thanks for copy and pasting your drive-by comment to get 10 points.

Peggy - no, I don't have it set up to "page" me, when a local question pops up... I tend to watch the new questions roll, and answer questions that interest me, regardless of their location.  Of course i have to be careful about addressing "truly local" issues, as laws change state-to-state.

Some folks will never be happy with agents.  Trulia gives them another platform.

And some agents fuel the flames with shallow and defensive commentary, inappropriate input and advice, and endless self-serving promotion.

Mike - as soon as you get a consumer to understand an issue, along comes a "great time to buy" realtor with some "drive by" comment, and it all starts all over again.

Dear Alan,

Answering questions in a national forum can be frustrating as the rules can vary from state to state. Sadly idiocy is also a nationwide phenomenon. My advice is to forget it.  I have always said "Don't let ugly/angry people live rent free in your head."

Cheers!

Alan - I try staying away from the Q&A's because so many people just don't get it, even when the facts are provided.

Betina - hey, I iike that "Don't let ugly/angry people live rent free in your head."

Well, sure Dunes... the standard commission is 98%... but we're a discount brokerage.

Michelle - in the case of my latest thread... ESPECIALLY when the fact are provided.

Alan - LOL at your restraint.  I'm feeling your pain, my friend, because I see the same crap with people who think every LO out there still working is a greedy, thieving, scum bag just looking to put borrowers into some crappy loan that pays the most commission regardless of what kind of loan it is.

While I agree that there are still LO's out there doing that, I am not one of those LO's and never have been one of those types of LO's.  So often, I feel compelled to defend not only myself and my business but my profession as well when I read crap by some ignorant moron who doesn't know what they're talking about.  That's also why I have a hard time reading LO bashing posts here on AR without leaving my .02,

I don't know what questions you get on Trulia for the Illinois market, but I just can't even bring myself to open some of the questions I see pop up for the L.A. market. Many of them are barely literate.  I wonder how some of the realtors can even bother to answer them and hope that they are going to get real business.  So far, I have not found Trulia of any use whatsoever.  Oh, but I do get calls from Trulia themselves.

Donne - a good 2¢

Jane - I don't read "only" Illinois... and I've had transactions from Trulia

Lise - I'm making money there... 'course I've been there a long, long time.

Susan - noted.

I see a lot of incorrect comments by Realtors, and I see a lot of confused comments by misinformed consumers as well. I don't waste my time attempting to argue with those who hate Realtors either, I don't get the point. They already hate me, so no need to stick around.

That's good to hear, Alan, because what I've been for L.A., the quality of answers from the realtors is excellent compared with the questions.

Alan,

As we all know there are those out there with WAAAAYYYY to much time on their hands.   It is entertainment to them to just sit and stir up trouble.  It is a shame that we do not know what field they are in.

Alan:

So far I have just been a bit of a "lurker" on Trulia. I find a lot of the things that Realtors write in to be a bit questionable, as you are saying. Maybe this is keeping me from commenting. I don't want to look like a complete idiot like I think some of them do. Before someone gives an answer to a real estate problem on a national (correction- worldwide) format, they should make sure that their answer is correct. - And, that is not always the case...
