Does your dog have the flu?

My owner is a Realtor at Century 21 Award in Mission ValleyI got an email from an old high school friend that I reconnected with recently through Facebook, yet I still don't have Facebook set up the way I'd like it to be. Talk about a hassle. That's for another time, though.

She didn't remember whether I had a cat or a dog -- I have a cat -- but apparently there is a new flu going around that only affects dogs. The flu was first identified in 2003 in Florida but has spread to thirty other states. It is said to be a year-round flu and highly contagious. Fortunately, there's a vaccine.

There's not much more at the dog influenza web site I was given, so if your dog seems a little worn out, check with your vet.

I have a cat as well as a dog. My grand baby was visiting from Okinawa Japan (my son is stationed there) and while he was here contracted H1N1. Well, my cat caught it as well. He was sick for about 3 days. We were so worried about him! He is better now, but I thought that was the craziest thing!

I hope Stephanie was talking about her son being better now, not the cat!!!!!

Hi Jim - This is a good alert for those who have dogs in their family. And good advice to check with your vet if you have any question.

Russ - I was just wondering who she was worried about - the grandbaby or the cat.  I'm sure both!

Jim,

That is interesting. I had no idea the flu was going around in animals. Thanks for the info and the website.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the information about dog influenza and the link to learn more about it.  We have a dog (and cats) and appreciate the tip for dog owners.

Chris

Hey, Stephanie - As bacteria and viruses continue to mutate, I suspect it's going to get worse before it gets better. Glad your little ones are okay.

Hey, Russ - One could read it wrong, that's true.

Hey, Susan - I think we can safely presume that Stephanie's cat is a male. LOL

Hey, Carra - I had heard about H1N1 in a dog and a ferret, but I didn't know about all these other flu types that our fine furry four-legged friends can get.

Hey, Chris - You're welcome. Hope your little ones don't catch anything other than the requisite rodents, birds, etc.
