My Greatest Motivator......FEAR !!!!!

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with RE/MAX Executive Realty

We all have different feelings that motivate us.  My greatest motivator in the real estate business is FEAR.  That one emotion will make the adrenaline flow faster than any other.  The fear that the phone will not ring, the buyers will go elsewhere, the agents will not call us to show our listings, we will not have any new listings etc. are the greatest motivators to work smarter.  That one emotion is responsible for my not abandoning my marketing, even for a short period of time, while my team and I are very busy with no time to spare.

The marketing continues as if we were out of business.  Once a marketing program is in place, it stays in place, as long as it works.  There are many agents who think that once the phone starts ringing because of direct mail, as an example, the mailings can be sent less frequently.  This is far from the truth.  If every deal is thought of as your last deal, your marketing routine will never stop, and your year will be a very successful one.  Stay in motion.

Excellent advice, Barbara, as usual. I guess you're saying that whatever marketing plan we put in place, we should plan on keeping in place (as long as it works) and so whatever resources we commit to those marketing efforts (whether time and/or money), we should budget to continue with them. Interesting. I hadn't thought of it that way. Rather, in my head, I had planned on more of an initial push (both time-wise and investment-wise) to get going in my business with a levelling off coming at some point down the road. -- Tanya in Montreal

You have to remember that while you're riding one wave, you have to be making plans to make the next wave happen.  Fear is a huge motivator!

Tanya....that's exactly where most agents go astray with direct mail marketing.....when it kicks in, keep it going....don't stop, unless you want the return to stop!!!  it doesn't work on its own.

Bob....Fear has done well by me for 31 years.....frightful, isn't it????  but it worked.

Barbara,

It cracks me up that it is usually the agents ,like you, that are at the TOP of their game that have that fear (not so much the ones that should have it).

I am going to remember that for my staging business. But I think that I will change the word FEAR to "staying ahead of my game".

I appreciate the reminder that we can't "rest on our laurels".

And I liked your blog on "Direct Marketing". I have been thinking ,ironically as I have just started a staging Newsletter for Real Estate Agents, that there are so many emails in people's in box, that it is probably good to go back to something more tangible like a nice mailing.

Thanks for sharing....

Barbara, thanks for the very straight forward post! Fear is definitely a major motivator in my world, but it must be tempered to not be overwhelming. I've seen too many agents who freeze up by their own fear. Looking forward to your future posts this year!

Cheryl.....that's right....have a successful 2010...

Marianne....that's great.....if I were you, I'd mail to every home tht is currently on the market in your area....that would make a great postcard.....telling them the first step in marketing a home is to stage the home....and they should take first steps first.
