Experiencing Valparaiso, Indiana Through Active Rain

By
Real Estate Agent

Having lived in Valparaiso, Indiana for 4 years, I have tried to learn as much as I can about our beautiful city and the area around it.  One of my favorite things to do is to walk around downtown, visit the shops stroll through the Courthouse Square, and have a meal at one of the cafes.  I have recently realized that I am also experiencing Valparaiso, Indiana through Active Rain and others who have lived here.

Take Pam Hockensmith, for instance, an agent in Peoria, Arizona who grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana.  I have learned so much about what Valparaiso, Indiana used to be like from her.  Just yesterday, I found out through one of her comments that Valparaiso, Indiana used to have a theatre downtown called the Premier Theatre!  I didn't know that.  It makes so much sense that Valpo would have a theatre in the center of town.  Now I just have to find out exactly where it used to be.  That is my mission for today.  Wouldn't it be great to have pictures of then and now?

Who would have thought that I would enjoy living in Valparaiso, Indiana as much as I do?  Not me!  Just goes to show that you should always be ready for a change and the results may surprise you!

Christine - You are right on the money!  Valparaiso means Vale of Paradise.  Thanks!

Lee and Carol - I think we tend to fight change but often change is a very good thing.

Liz - Very few people pick up on the meaning of the name.  I sure didn't until after we moved here.  I think it was actually on a AR post by Grace Safrin that she mentioned that and the light bulb came on in my head.  Then I wondered how in the world I had missed that!  DUH!

Irene--No wonder you are always so upbeat.  You live in paradise.  I am going to find the atlas so I can see exactly where in IN Valparaiso is located.  Our newspaper started a new column 'What's in a name?'  They started with story about the origin of Erie's name--the Eriez Indians.

Mary - I just learned something else from you again!  I had never heard of the Eriez Indiana so I went and looked them up on Wikipedia.  Who would have thought that I'd learn some American history through AR!  :-)

Oh I meant to say this building reminds me of the capitol building in Juneau, Alaska.  It was hard taking a picture without the proper lens, etc.

Mary - I've always admired people with the gift of teaching since I don't have it at all!  I taught private music lessons for many years and I enjoyed that because it was one on one.  But put me in a room with more than one other person and I will the the listener not the talker.  Teaching a group is way out of my comfort zone!

That's a good way of looking at it.  You know, you can start a group for your town on Facebook, if nobody has already.

Georgina - I thought about doing that and decided to wait because I didn't think I'd have time to keep up with it on FB.  In the meantime, someone has already started one.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Irene, I am living my former life through you right now.  I sent you a link to where I think the theatre was on Lincolnway!
