What Would Life be Like Without a Cell Phone?

Can you imagine life without a cell phone?

Do I need just one cell phone or more than one?

  • For some, this might be your worst nightmare. Your personal hell.

  • For others, life without a cell phone would be paradise.

I had another one of many conversations with an out of state client whose REO purchase closes in a couple of days. She does not have a cell phone, and after our talk I found myself pondering...

So what WOULD life look like without a cell phone??

No entertaining, and not so entertaining, ring tones to listen to

No text messages

No telemarketing calls (well at least not to your hip or purse)

No surfing the 'Net wherever you are (OK, most places)

No bothersome emails unless you sit down at your computer

No vibrating

No reminders in every meeting, in restaurants, and in church to turn off your phones

No frantic stepping out of a meeting room and running outside to get cell service

No dropping calls

No sprained thumbs

Bars would take on a whole new meaning. Or an old meaning

No bumping into trees, lamp posts, people or falling off the curb while texting and emailing (Seriously, injuries are increasing)

Social gatherings would all be live, and folks would look you in the eye when you are talking

No one talking at the top of their lungs walking down the street (alright, there may still be some of that)

Less pressure to respond instantly, no matter what you are doing (come one, admit you take calls and text in the bathroom)

Folks would drive their cars with both hands on the wheel.

People would dine out without chatting on their cells, or annoying others

No beaming or bumping

I could go on, but you get the picture.

There ARE folks who manage to get through life without cell phones. We ALL did for years. But I don't know that I could now.

The thought of putting it away for a while or not taking it everywhere I go has some appeal. Until I really think about it and panic. I AM hooked. I admit it. You?

Jeff, I remember all to well what life was like without cell phones.  I still remember pulling into commuter parking lots or gasoline stations to make phone calls and retrieve my messages.  And I will never forget having to do that in the poring rain, and the blistering cold wind of Winter.

I will gladly put up with the drooped calls, no bars, and annoying messages.  When it comes to phone calls, the good old days were not so good ........ LOL

Jeff, I have clients that don't have cell phones or email. Doing real estate and helping them is VERY much impeded. I can only print out lists for them to drive by and then call me to see. I'm so busy that I can no longer show them all listings. It still works, however. They do drive by and call to show.

I have clients that research everything on the web and want to see everything on the web. We work with that!

I also have clients with big mega computers that want to drive by and call to view. Go figure! We are and remain a diverse group of humans. Our job....to service. I work with both....technology advantaged and those that don't do technology at all. I have to say....that while I love what technology does for me personally....I would not mind being NOT connected! Great post!

It's funny when you think about it. No I can't imagine it either. But, gosh it was only a few years ago we didn't have one. I got rid of one of my landline phone numbers. The second one is dying a slow death...no one ever calls on it. My kids never use it.

No way to reach my husband when I have car trouble (or lock my keys in the car)- at least not w/o hiking to a pay phone and finding change (dp they eve HAVE pay phones anymore?).

I love my cell phone- it is a lot more than just a phone. If I don't want to be bothered with calls I simply silence it and let it go to message.

Hi Jeff ~ I think it would be wonderful.  It's just like any other bad habit - you can give it up.  I think Hannah's observation (#9) is one of my least favorite things about cell phones - particularly in groups that think of themselves as tech savvy.

I heard a teaser on TV that Massachusetts is close to banning them while driving. It will be difficult to make the change but overalll a good idea. I just think that there should be some kind of zapper that makes them not work in cars - instead of pressure to make even tunnels cell phone-friendly. Crazy world.
